Fresh film that could have done better
rish200611 November 2019
It was a decent film that had the capability of executing it much better. The cast did their parts in a satisfactory way. I would still consider it as a 'Family Film' Since it is worth a one time watch. You can go and watch this film as a family because I believe that children will really like this film. Apart from the film
  • songs are good.
  • sets are great.

One-Line Review: Satellite Shankar / Exaggerated and Cringeworthy Yet Feel-Good / 5 Stars
nairtejas15 June 2020
I have to give it to the makers and Sooraj Pancholi for making a very watchable emotional action drama that attempts to glorify the life of a soldier in India (which to an extent is true), and even with its fair share of issues, cringe sequences (mostly involving Pancholi doing somewhat of a mime act), and nearly illogical story arcs, Satellite Shankar (given name) passes muster. TN.

Movie has low production values., well intentioned film but bad execution.
Tejas_Vinda_AITS8 November 2019
Shankar(Sooraj Pancholi), a soldier in the Indian Army gets a week off from his duty, owing to an injury he incurs during a crossfire on the border.

But instead of spending this time resting at the hospital, he decides to visit his mother across the country, to help go through her long pending eye operation.

But with the many problems enroute, will he able to reach his mother on time? And report back to duty as promised.

Shankar (Sooraj Pancholi) is called 'Satellite Shankar' because he has a device which seems to transport people to their near and dear ones when they are missing them.

That makes him very popular in his battalion.

Satellite Shankar' attempts to tell the story of the sacrifices soldiers make while they fight for their countrymen at the borders.

Movie has low production values. There is an underlying theme of patriotism.

'Satellite Shankar' is a well intentioned film that gets undone due to bad execution.

Sooraj Pancholi tries his best to put in a sincere performance but it mostly comes off as overenthusiastic & overTried..!!

Feel sad for inconsiderate reviews
mittalkaustubh19 March 2020
My first review.. forced by dismal commercial performance of movie and its rating.. not that I recommend the movie.. but felt deeply moved by its spirit - which represents the spirit of Indians. I would like to believe that in a similar real life instance, we Indians will indeed come together - in our actions - to help fulfil the small desires of all Indian soldiers.

aishwaryaagrawal13 November 2019
This film connects your heart to all the soldiers who strive so hard for our country & people dont realize their struggle. Its an extraordinary journey of an ordinary soldier. Its action packed, emotional, romantic - everything that a film needs to have to make it big. Sooraj's performance is the cherry on the cake. Please go watch it.

Filmfare review
anjali_sethi1211 November 2019
Shankar (Sooraj Pancholi) is a soldier stationed at Kashmir who gets injured during a skirmish. It"s not a bad injury. He"s in the good books of his commanding officer after defending his post from the Pakistani firing single handedly. Hence, he asks for his eight days rest leave to be converted into regular leave so that he can travel down South and get his ailing mother operated for cataract.

The officer grants him the wish on the condition that he should be present at the parade ground in the morning at the end of it. Shankar is plied with gifts and parcels and letters meant for their relatives from his colleagues. They assure him that someone would collect them from him on his long train journey from Jammu to South. Unfortunately, he misses his train while helping an old couple. He embarks on a road journey, sacrificing his leave for the benefit of his colleagues, touching base with their families and solving their problems. He does many good deeds along the way, which get chronicled by an over enthusiastic video blogger (Palomi Ghosh), making him famous throughout the country. It seems that he might miss out his joining deadline and that"s when his new found fans across the country unite to save his honour.

Satellite Shankar"s premise is remotely like that of Bajrangi Bhaijaan. There, an Indian do-gooder crossed the border in order to unite a young Pakistani girl with her parents, sparking a mini people"s revolution on both sides of the border. Here too, a country gets united when they hear about the exploits of a common soldier. The film marks the return of Sooraj Pancholi to big screen four years after his much hyped debut with Hero (2015). South actress Megha Akash plays his love interest and the film marks her Hindi debut.

The film does have an interesting premise in the sense that it"s lead is a good voice artiste having command over multiple languages and as a result brings alive the spirit of any person he mimics. It tries to highlight how soldiers stationed at far away places can"t be there when their families need them but they happily bear the burden for their country. It asks you to put yourself in their shoes for a minute and see the world from their perspective.

The film takes time to grow on you. You begin to think it"s one of those one-man-army kind of movies where the hero changes the system through his fists but thankfully it doesn"t turn out to be so. However improbable the situations look like, they do echo real life concerns. It is definitely true that soldiers get duped out of their property by cunning relatives. Or that the army is called in during any emergency as the civilian authorities prove incompetent. It also comments on how we have become so obsessed with our smartphones that we would rather record a tragedy over our cameras instead of reaching out and helping our fellow human beings.

The film comes alive in the second half, when the romance between Shankar and Pramila (Megha Akash) starts to blossom. They make for a cute couple and their interactions were the nicest portions of the film. In fact, it makes you wish the film was more of a romance than a vehicle with a message.

It"s reportedly shot across 10 states and the cinematography does bring the beauty of the rustic outdoors come alive. Sooraj Pancholi tries to do justice to his good Samaritan character and his earnestness and sincerity can"t be denied. He"s good in fight scenes as well. Megha Akash makes a confident Hindi debut. Somebody needs to cast her in a meatier role soon.

Satellite Shankar meanders off course a wee bit, is melodramatic and OTT at times but its heart certainly beats for Indian armed forces alright.

I deeply respect army but,
adityagautam-5922522 June 2020
This movie is such a rubbish storyline, b/c they are just using indian people's emotions against the Kashmiri people, i know you would say kashmiri women saved him but that was just like a joke and using hate and spreading hate against kashmiri people , not all are same, Aurangzeb, a kashmiri, was in indian army and killed many terrorists and martyred with indian flag. The movie makers are using just army dress in entire movie just to get emotional attachment.

Overenthusiastic!
SinhaSomesh8 November 2019
#FinalVerdict

Writer/director Irfan Kamal may've borrowed real life events but Satellite Shankar is a typical Bollywood enterprise which ends up being a masala film that we've witnessed over & over again.

First things first! The story is different, something that hasn't been attempted before and Satellite Shankar has a strong message to offer. The intentions of writer/director Irfan Kamal need to be applauded! It moves you in parts.

So, does Satellite Shankar strike a chord? Not really. In fact, a little more concentration on that vital aspect called 'script' and it would've been in a class of its own. Just one word for this film: Disappointing! It just doesn't work.

DoP Jitan Harmeet Singh has done a splendid job in capturing the scenic locales. Frankly, the music (Rochak Kohli, Mithoon & Tanishk Bagchi) is weak and the songs that have been incorporated, don't appeal. Director Irfan Kamal's handling of the subject deserves credit but the problem clearly lies in the scripting. He should've stuck to realism, instead of trying to strike a balance between realism & make-believe. There is really very little logic at play here. Also, there is an underlying theme of patriotism but the very low production values & weak narrative (resorting to every cliche and generalisation possible) make Satellite Shankar dated. Even the dialogue (Irfan Kamal & Vishal Vijay Kumar), like the screenplay writing, is pathetic.

Sooraj Pancholi tries very hard to look the character, but I just couldn't connect with it. Debutante Megha Akash has put in a lot of effort to stay true to her character. Palomi Ghosh delivers a striking performance. Upendra Limaye, Raj Arjun, Sanjay Gurbaxani & Sohaila Kapur leave a mark in small, but significant roles.

Honestly, Satellite Shankar comes across as a disjointed effort, in terms of writing. It is more of a collage of several isolated incidents, which explains why the screenplay lacks the power to keep you engaged. Sure, a few sequences are attention grabbing, but even the finale is poorly done. Skip it! It's a non-starter!

Another bollywood product playing on immature emotions
ashishsoul25 July 2020
Storyline Review: Another half-cooked story line palying on emotion that has already been exploited millions of times in bollywood.

Acting: Pathetic to say the least. Just wearing army dress can't do much if you act like a rotten potato.

Cinematography: script and acting haven't left much room for cinematography. It was average. Have seen better.

Komal nahata critic review
anjali_sethi1212 November 2019
Super Cassettes Industries Pvt. Ltd. and Cine1 Studios' Satellite Shankar is the story of an armyman who has a heart of gold.

Shankar (Sooraj Pancholi) is an army jawan who has a heart of gold. Whether it is his army friends or unknown people, he never steps back from helping them even at the cost of his own time and work. He attributes all his noble deeds to his satellite connection with God as he always has an idol of Lord Shankar with himself. That's how he is known as Satellite Shankar.

Satellite Shankar gets an eight-day leave from his duty in North India. He sets out for South India to meet his mother and other family members but while helping an aged couple change trains, he misses his own train barely a few hours after boarding it. Besides, he also has to keep promises he has made to some colleagues to meet their family members. On the way, he meets a news blogger, Meera Bakshi (Palomi Ghosh), whom also he helps. The same news blogger gets to know that shortly after their meeting, he had saved a number of lives including her own. It is now her mission to present the noble Satellite Shankar to the world through her blog.

Along the way, Shankar also meets Pramila (Megha Akash) whom he falls in love with and who is his mother's choice also. Almost his entire leave gets consumed even before Shankar can reach home because he has only helped his colleagues and other strangers along the way. Shankar realises that he has just a few hours to meet his family as he has to report for duty on the appointed day. Because he is a man of his word, he even contemplates aborting the trip midway. But he decides to go to his own home even for a few hours. How ordinary citizens of India then make his return to his base camp on time possible is what the latter part of the drama is all about.

Vishal Vijay Kumar and Irfan Kamal have written a heartfelt story and an engaging screenplay about a do-gooder armyman. No doubt, it makes the armyman almost appear like a superman but still, the drama has its heart in the right place. The screenplay has moments which can moisten the eyes of the audience several times. But the same screenplay has a couple of drawbacks, besides the fact that it makes the implausible seem so easy. The reason for Satellite Shankar to reach his base camp is just his promise; it should have been something more than his attempt to keep his word. Since he is an armyman, it should've been a much larger reason with ramifications for the country or, at least, in that league. No doubt, keeping one's promise is a good thing and a laudable move but surely, a bigger motive would've made the attempt of the countrymen to help Shankar seem so much more worthwhile. Since the country unites to help Shankar via the Internet, the whole exercise will be appreciated by the classes mainly, making the drama too elitist. The scenes which are truly emotional are the ones showing Shankar with the Muslim family of Shankar's army friend, with the Punjabi family of another army friend, and with the mother of a deceased army friend (at the police station). The scenes of Satellite Shankar and Pramila are both, cute and entertaining. Vishal Vijay Kumar and Irfan Kamal's dialogues are very good at places.

Sooraj Pancholi is cute and endearing. He acts well and shows a lot of earnestness. The role demanded a big star with an image but Sooraj, nevertheless, acts pretty well. Palomi Ghosh is natural to the core and does an impressive job as journalist Meera Bakshi. Megha Akash looks pretty and delivers a lovely performance as Pramila. Upendra Limaye is fantastic in the role of police inspector Shinde. Chhaya Kadam makes her presence felt as the deceased Mahadik's mother. Pradeep Singh Batra (as Jeetu Singh), Anurag Mishra (as Anwar), Prakash Vishwakarma (as Joy Babu), Agnelo Chang (as the commander), Sugandha Dalvi (as Jeetu Singh's mother), Kittu Sidhu (as Jeetu's wife), Kulvir Singh (as Jeetu's brother), Harshdeep Singh (as Jeetu's younger brother, Kartar), Neha Gupta (as Jeetu's sister-in-law), Shivani Joshi (as Jeetu's younger sister), Sanjay Gurbaxani (as Colonel Cheema), Ajit Joseph (as Johnny), Abhishek Pandey (as the senior officer), Kalyan Sen (as the Bengali uncle), Shipra Das (as the Bengali aunty), Sohaila Kapur (as Shankar's mother), Neeraja Rajendran (as Shankar's grandmother), Deeptesh Das (as the TC on the Jammu train), Asif Basra (as the cab driver), Anil Reji (as Sridhar), Subrat Dutta (as Tripathy), Yashwant Wasnik (as the railway line man), master Kabir Ali (as the bus accident kid), Daljeet Singh (as Mushy), Ila Bhate (as Anwar's mother), Anubha Arora (as Anwar's wife, Hina), Sameer Deshpande (as Anwar's brother, Nasir), Abhishek Trivedi (as Anwar's brother, Tahir), Anuja Lokre (as Nasir's wife), Ajita Kulkarni (as Tahir's wife), master Aditya Sen (as Anwar's son), Abhijeet Deshmane (as Bablu), Kailash Waghmare (as the vigilante), Milind Shinde (as Saheb), Sneha Sawant (as Mahadik's wife), master Siddhesh Ganorkar (as Mahadik's son), Sunil More (as police inspector Shinde's driver), Shivani Soopuri (as the Kashmiri lady) and the rest lend nice support.

Irfan Kamal's direction is fairly nice. He has especially handled the emotional scenes well. Music (Mithoon, Rochak Kohli and Tanishk Bagchi) is melodious but none of the songs is popular. Lyrics (Mithoon and Kumaar) are weighty. Ahmed Khan and Ganesh Acharya's choreography is functional. Sandeep Shirodkar's background music is effective. Jitan Harmeet Singh's camerawork is nice. Action scenes and stunts (by Abbas Ali Moghul) are well-composed. Tariq Umar Khan's production designing is okay. Chandan Arora's editing is sharp.

On the whole, Satellite Shankar is a film with its heart in the right place. But complete lack of promotion and its implausibility will do the film in. Consequently, it will go largely unnoticed despite having good moments.

Released on 8-11-'19 at Inox (daily 1 show) and other cinemas of Bombay thru PEN Marudhar Cine Entertainment. Publicity: dull. Opening: poor. .......Also released all over. Opening was terribly weak everywhere.

Finally bollywood gets a taste of an original screenplay after so long. Unlike any mainstream commercial movie this one will leave you in awe. As the movie is shot across 10 different regions in India you will get a glimpse of snowy mountains as well as rural settlements and modern cities . You will love the movie to its core.
