A great start for the new BBC drama.

Having survived his brain tumor at the end of The Missing, the charismatic French detective, now retired is back to his day job, tracking down a girl in Amsterdam.

This was a very gripping drama, very bleak, and very violent, it's hardly easy going, family viewing, but it's compelling, relevant and of course engaging.

Quite straightforward, and easy to follow, it is of course the Charismatic performance of Tcheky Karyo that makes it so good, but the production values and location work are great. Who doesn't love fields of tulips?

It's going to be a great series. 8/10

Really impressed that the standards in storytelling and mystery have stayed on from previous show The missing !! What starts as a young women going missing quickly turns into a bigger and more sinister tail.

In the final episode of Missing it might had also been the end of Julien Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo) who was suffering from a brain tumour.

In this spin off series Baptiste is living in Amsterdam given an all clear by the doctors. The police ask him to help out a frenzied panic stricken Edward Stratton (Tom Hollander) over from England, searching for his niece who might had gone into prostitution in the city's red light district.

Icelandic director Börkur Sigþórsson brings a Scandi-Noir style to this first episode. It starts off with grey skies when you know that the Romanian gas meter reader has murder on his mind.

We enter a seedy violent world of sex trafficking and vicious crime gangs. Baptiste helps out Stratton who at first glance looks like someone not cut out to enter this dark world.

But Baptiste has been singled out already, the gangsters know he is searching for a missing person.

The Williams Brothers know how to set up their thrillers. The first episode was a slow burner but brooding with flashes of violence. Baptiste is not as fast as he used to be since his operation but the audience were already dealt with a murder in the opening minute and a chainsaw.

Somehow Rita Hayworth DVDs provides Baptiste with important clues and someone who might be hiding their identity. He might have slowed down but he is determined to get there.
