Black is the New Hollywood
Prismark102 August 2019
The final part of Black Hollywood shows that despite obstacles some of which still continues, how much black talent has contributed to success in Hollywood.

Films with a diverse cast do well in the box office from the Fast and Furious franchise to the new Star Wars films.

Behind the scenes there are more black writers and directors. Jordan Peele won an Oscar for writing Get Out. Barry Jenkins directed Moonlight which won the best picture Oscar.

Black British actors are finding that they are getting more opportunities to work in the USA than the UK. This has caused controversy among some black Americans who are losing work to British actors.

British actor David Oyelowo got the role of Martin Luther King in a motion picture directed by a black female Ava DuVernay. Oyelowo still feels the pressure that in films he appears in carries a burden of expectations that does not always apply to white stars.

Simon Frederick has made a fascinating documentary on Black Hollywood. The final part gives an optimistic outlook that finally black movies have entered the mainstream. Only time will tell if this is true. There have been false dawns in the past. This time black talent are not just appearing in movies but developing projects thereby creating further opportunities for themselves.

There are some notable omissions in this series. Denzel Washington and Spike Lee did not contribute even though their work is discussed.
