This is ground control to Captain Ed ...
bosporan16 May 2022
Following Shane's accident, Karen agonises over the unenviable decision whether to tell Ed, isolated and alone on the moon. Another fabulous performance by Shantel VanSanten as Karen who flips from stiff upper lip to weeping to organising busy-work.

A heartrending episode.

Heartbreaking....
hpringnitz16 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
....in more than just the sense of two parents losing a son tragically. As one who has felt that pain in real life and remembering how difficult it was to recover from in a normal, earthbound setting, I don't know how anyone could do it with the additional stresses of a setting like this one. But I was lucky in that I had the support of all my friends and coworkers to help me through the most difficult part of it.

The folks at NASA (and his own wife) keeping Ed literally in the dark about Shane's death is, to me, unforgivable. I don't see this storyline going anywhere good for any of them. At least Karen bought a little redemption by finally telling him the truth before his relief arrived. But this will be a permanent rift between him and NASA. Has to be. I hope he doesn't look for comfort in that bottle he was chugging from. I know it's not there.

As soon as I can clear away tears to the point that I can once again see my TV screen, I'll look toward the next episode for a hint.

YOUR TURN
moviesfilmsreviewsinc12 August 2022
The personal and the professional are forever linked, as they are both driving factors for the future. For both to become so compromised by reality, so hurt by factors completely out of one's control, leaves this sense of weight that previous episodes only hinted at, but finally it comes in full force now. Shane's deteriorating health, and pairing it against the deterioration of the Jamestown base as the Russians start to slowly infiltrate the edges, is that previously mentioned link. It's the hardened world on those edges starting to seep into the idealism that For All Mankind wears proudly, where goodness doesn't always prevail. Shantel VanSanten is exceptional throughout, managing to hold back the influx of emotion and saying so much with Karen from that mask she puts over her feelings, over her own well-being, to keep everything on the level. Even after the second opinion, Karen refuses to let her emotions get the better of her, only breaking down when telling Ed the truth. The way she goes through the paperwork, already planning Shane's funeral, is another coping mechanism, this idea of keeping busy and refusing to stay still and allow her thoughts to get in her way.

Another powerhouse of the episode is Sarah Jones, Tracy becoming the rock for Karen under such trying times. There's a quiet ferocity to the way Tracy protects Karen, and how she's willing to be the softer touch while Karen goes through the phases of grief before our eyes. It's a moment that comes as a choice for emotion over practical, when the rest of the episode is directly in the opposite mode. Perhaps her father will be a push in the right direction, as his watchful eye takes in more than he lets on.

I love that this show focuses on several strong female characters. We need more shows like this.

The show needed this episode, for better or worse
david-ddrew4 November 2022
This show has felt mostly hollow to this point. Most Apple TV series, for some reason, take quite a while to grab you with something to care about.

While I don't particularly care for Ed or Karen or really anyone else on the show, this episode really brings home the practical drama and pain of distance when it comes to loved ones. The feeling of helplessness and the guilt of pursuing one's own ambitions at the expense of everything else.

The show had more superficial examples of these dichotomies, but it needed something somber and shattering to really drive it home. This episode reminds me of the movie First Man, which is, in my opinion, one of the greatest astronaut biopics ever made.

Just with one word "Great"
mehgoktugas19 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Great performances (each chars), Great story arc and twists. (how they built up to "everything is fine" but all of a sudden Soviets sends their griefs to the man and after that, everything that they tried to make after that point doesn't matters anymore.) Great choices at the editing side (transitions, sound design, no music sections)

Shouldn't forget to mention, also the characters feels so realistic and their behaviours when they face something feels natural. But as usual and normally some characters may annoy you.

ITS JUST SO CLOSE BUT a need to skip the Almeida scenes. Just skip when u see it IT IS NOT on tv.

Heartbreaking episode
tswiftma-584233 March 2021
Another great episode this one is a total heartbreaker. A bit too long however. If they could edit all of these down to 45 minutes it would be excellent.

Your turn for a bike ride Mom
kingsx_6417 January 2022
But It's sad that don't feel one drop of sympathy for that disgusting woman. For Ed? Yes.

I understand people handle grief differently.

But she's like that ALL THE TIME.

Ick, if only she could have died, (she's a fictional character) instead of her son.

Here's to hoping mom/Karen hops on a bicycle soon.

Cheap plot device
pdfletcher26 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Really disappointed in this story arc. I really find the death of the child of the main character a cheap plot device. Especially when the kid is "troubled". Just lazy writing to create artificial tension away from the main focus of the story.

Descent into the abyss of third-rate soap
davidwhitmarsh-473277 September 2021
Fantastic series marred by a storyline that lays on the maudlin misery thick and fast, and then lays on more of the same. You could distil this one down to five minutes for the key points that move the plot along. A real let-down.

What misery .....
ian-249-6161917 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Do we really need such a devastating plot?

I understand the need for the script writers to bring huge emotion into a plot. But really.... this hurt too much.

Feel like stopping watching if it does not cheer up.

Such. Bad. Writing.
OftenCriticalGuy10 November 2021
The writers got bored with their own premise. The writers can't find enough legitimate drama in the space premise, so they start inventing this absurd melodrama all over the place. This is little better than a daytime soap. Hey! What if an astronaut has a long lost twin? And that twin was raised in RUSSIA and he's a COSMONAUT. Oh, and then we can do an amnesia plot, everyone loves those.

The premise is solid, and they just fowl it up with this bad and overworn melodrama. It's like if Mad Men lost half it's IQ. If not more.

Hold it together
owamibuy13 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Karen is a train wreck of a character! She feels like she has to hold it together all the time with a "I'm fine" front and can't ever just say what's inside. It's seriously painful to watch.

I appreciate the complexities each individual is facing and the writers trying to illustrate the struggles of humanity. It's just draining. Makes you wanna crack just watching her!
