Too many unanswered questions...
heatherbrittany29 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's definitely one of the more creepy episodes so far but I'm extremely confused as to what just went on. It's about 30 min to the end of the show that things start to really happen but the problem is that's not enough time to explain everything leaving us left with so many unanswered questions.

I understand everything that had to do with the mom, what I don't understand is everything else. Things Like who and what these "creatures" are, were they even real? why were they targeting the family in the first place? why was Maggie the one they wanted? what did the missing persons board and the person in the trailer have to do with it? How did "letting go" and dumping the moms ashes have anything to do with defeating the creatures? If anyone knows what's going on here please write a review to explain it.

Best so far!
laceydelrae10 June 2019
I would definitely give this episode a chance. Very impressed! I think rating it at 10 is maybe over the top, as I reserved 10s for the best of the best. But it doesn't deserve a 1. It's above average and well worth the watch. I've seen all the monthly episodes/movies on In the Dark and this has been my all time favorite.

The movie is centered around Father's Day and grief. A father takes his two daughters on a camping trip back to the spot him and his wife visited when he asked her to marry him. It's a desolate and barren area with nothing around for miles, but it's meaningful. The family is suffering from overwhelming grief after losing their mother to cancer. The teenage daughter is lashing out at everyone because she's hurting deep inside, while the younger daughter clings to her father scared of losing him now. The first night in their motor home very creepy black eyed children come. They want to be let in.. You might be wondering like I did, how this grieving family ties in with terrifying black eyed children, but it does and it works.

There was emotional depth to this movie that I hadn't seen much of with any of the other episodes. Its not a sappy drama either, in fact this is the ONLY episode in the series that made me jump on several occasions. As a regular horror movie buff I watch tons of horror movies every week so I'm pretty desensitized to them, so if a movie can make me jump even once then I'm thrilled!

Sit back, allow yourself to get absorbed and you'll find 1.5 hours well spent!

The pace was slow but the children were eerie. The acting wasn't bad. It's nothing special overall but not a complete waste of time either.

Father's Day horror film on Hulu - They Come Knocking. It's the story of a father with two children coping with the death of the mother. They take a family trip to where the father proposed to the mother to the leave her ashes and they find ghosts including the a ghost of the mother at the location. This movie was okay and worth watching. The pace was slow but the children were eerie. The acting wasn't bad. It's nothing special overall but not a complete waste of time either. 5/10.

Creepy
dar041730 March 2021
A first site this seemed like another rip off of The Strangers. In one aspect it is but it still captures creepiness and has some scary moments and it goes without saying it also has some moment where it follows the horror cliche.

Honest review.
ryanmdick12 June 2019
I was going into this movie thinking it would be somewhat of a "Strangers" knock off which I'm glad it wasn't. Yes this movie has flaws in a normal sense of the term, but for what it's worth the acting is high above most box office "hits" in the same genre. I'll definitely say this, I'd pay $10-$12 to see this movie over most of the crap Hollywood pumps out these days. Just give it a chance.

Why? Why? Why?

Warning: Spoilers
Hulu manages to save some money by showing and re-showing and showing AGAIN the same flashback of mom dying. We get it - Terribly sad, but made less so because of the repetition and manipulation of showing that scene again and again. And it really doesn't tie into the horror plot AT ALL. Why the creepy kids in matching low-rent outfits? What's their back story? Their purpose? Their connection to the family? Perhaps this could have turned into a musical if the l'il creeps had busted out some 'Thriller'-style dance moves....

Some explanation of the horror plot and relation to the family's conflict would have made this very good and they could have replaced that incessant flashback to mom dying with backstory that could have made this interesting.

And Dad? Get a haircut. Your look is way too '90s.

Waste. Of. Time.

[5.6] The beautiful landscape!
cjonesas9 June 2021
Interesting premise, touching storyline, beautiful score, but with arctic logic and dismal acting decisions.

Everything is illogical even with the help of the supernatural factor.

Slow paced and very unsatisfying in the end.

Terrible
misiulisdeividas7 March 2020
First off the characters are so unrealistic. I get that it's a movie but come on, at least make it so their actions seem somewhat reasonable so the person watching can get into the movie. Second the whole flashback things got really old after a while because it seemed like they showed the same thing over and over again. Third the whole movie in general just dragged, was dull, and just seemed poorly made. I have seen better low budget horror flicks than this one. I actually disliked it so much I made an account just to leave this review so I don't feel like I totally wasted an hour and a half of my life for nothing. Congrats Hulu on producing crap.

It was ok. Kind of slow.
atwiththestars24 July 2022
The Hills Have Eyes, but with ghosts. The pacing is slow. The story was not very original, but I wasn't bored and didn't hate the characters. I did jump once which for this whole series thus far is the first and only time. This isn't bad or great. It was just ok.

Meh.
Crys279714 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It was ok, but not worth your time. It could have been done WAY better but it became more annoying than anything. Nothing really makes sense, the characters make horrible decisions, not much explanation for the story line.... and honestly, I was rooting for the youngest kid to get attacked because of the crying/the stupidity. It was creepy at first, the voices, but then they turn it into kids in hoodies? How is that scary?? Would have been better if we never saw what it was....

Finally an episode from Into the Dark worth watching
filmmakersis8 June 2019
I have not been impressed by Into the Dark until now. The other episodes were dull, poorly written and nothing special. This one however has it all. Great acting and chemistry and set design. A super spooky story with a few jumps. Worth the watch.

Uneven but intriguing
rivertam2624 March 2020
This is a movie that works better symbolically than it does at face value. A father takes his young daughters on a trip to spread their mother's ashes after she died of cancer at the place where they fell in love. While there they are attacked by as group of demonic children in hoods at night. Trapped in the middle of nowhere the father hiked out to try and get help but the little monsters have a more insidious plan for their newest victims. The movie is definitely creepy and emotionally resonant. It's also a bit uneven and has an amateur feel due to the clunky direction. Ultimately the children represent grief and how we hold onto it even when it's time too let go. The problem is the movie is quite nonsensical and heavy handed. That being said the performances are pretty solid all around and you can't help but give props to the makers for being do ambitious. Which makes it fit perfectly into Hulu's innovative Into the Dark series. Plus it's scary. Father's Day.

ReapersGrunt8 June 2019
Huh? What is the point of this movie? I literally don't know what to write, because I'm still trying to figure what the hell I just watched. I guess my advice would be to just keep scrolling on your Hulu account! Your welcome!

Really good acting but ending was too simple and didnt add up.
katherine_ann6 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The actors were all awesome! I mean I liked the people more than the storyline! Overall it was a good watch and worth giving it a shot. I was screaming at the tv at one point and you know thats a sign of a good show. However idk why but the smallest girl really annoyed the crap out of me and I was almost okay with her dying. I know she was grieving and thats horrible. But I just did not like her at all. Also the ending was too simple. He just had to let his wife "go" ..and they seemed so vicous at first like they almost tackled the dad but then they have th daughter cornered...and they take the time to hiss at her and not just kill her!?! I dont think so. Hence the 7. Itd be a 10 if the ending made sense honestly!

Are Writers Just Dumb?
saemlb11 June 2019
Towards the beginning of the episode, the family pulls into a gas station in their pickup pulling a trailer. The first thing the father does is get out and check the oil on his truck. Why? You cannot get an accurate reading when you have been driving it. Checking the oil was just something to do so he could talk to his daughter. OK, why not clean the windshield? Writers think they know something but since they have never done it themselves they really don't. I hate stupid mistakes like this and they happen all the time.

Kids ruin everything
glxsykes18 September 2020
The whole time I was hoping that the little girl would get smacked across the face by anybody. Nothing ruins the ambiance of a horror movie like a bad child actor.

It's not the worst, but it's not the best either.
marioradomanana23 February 2020
All in all, it's a pretty good movie. The actors are good. The initial idea was good too. But I've noticed a lot of negative points:

  • First of all, the end. What the heck is this? It's too easy. It's pointless.
  • Secondly, the cliché about the behavior of the protagonists. Why horror filmmakers always make the protagonists so stupid? You're so used to this kind of behavior that instead of being afraid, you're mostly on edge.
  • Then, I wonder why it's a horror movie. The first season's episodes were all about psychopaths. The goal was to show the darkness of humans. Then, in that season, it became a horror movie. It made me lose interest in following the show.

Confusion and Disappointment
brandonjcoleman18 September 2020
Storyline is confusing. They never really addressed whats attacking them. At first I thought they were going towards a home invasion "Strangers" type concept but then they changed directions towards a paranormal type concept which was confusing. The resolve of the movie happened so randomly without any explanation which no sense.

They Come Knocking
bobcobb30122 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
If you came in hoping for Masterpiece Theatre you were not going to get it tonight, but that doesn't mean it didn't serve its purpose as a low budget horror flick.

They need to start giving us some twist endings or at least something different because the idea of ghosts killing his family because he didn't throw out an old alcohol they once shared is absurd.

Weakly reasoned thriller.
jkelt16 June 2019
This episode had a decent set up, and some emotional motivation for the characters; I'll give it that. But a viewer would have to have a high tolerance for horror cliches and be ready to forgive a total breakdown of any logical coherence for the sake of a few jump scares to really enjoy this. Ultimately disappointing.

Very Intense Thriller, and Horror, and yet comes w/ a powerful meaning.
mallard1710 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
They Come Knocking. Obviously based on the "Black Eyed Children" myth, isn't at all disappointing.

At the very start of this film, the scenes where not very long, and at least for me, it got straight to the point of the movie, and also to the very touching death of Mom. While the movie went on, the scenes started getting really eerie, although I really thought that was it. I was wrong! Throughout the content, it greets you once again with powerful jump scares, moments where you cannot imagine what will happen next, it keeps you hooked on, quite terrified, to the point where it all starts to wrap up.

Through this film, the scenes of the thriller really catch on to viewers, and the ending is most powerful than ever, and it really brings some joy into the film, so you aren't left feeling scared or disappointed.

This movie is a good 9/10 for me, including one scene where it keeps you waiting, and waiting for quite too long. But with that aside, the movie was really great!

People need to pay better attention, decent movie
lovedawn-5630910 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So a lot of people don't seem to get the point of this movie and I'm not sure how. At the end, the teenage daughter felt like she needed to bring the wine bottle with her. It's not wine!! Its her mother's ashes!! Earlier in the movie it shows them trying to pick out a vase for her ashes and he says "she loved a good red" and then it showed the wine bottle, and if you watch when he pours it out, it is clearly not wine! Good movie overall about family bonds, love, and grief with a little horror and legend mixed in

Just Terrible wasted my time.
plasssaskia23 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There was no jump scare and on top of this the story was stupid. The scary people were kids dressed up with hoodies with weird face/mask and creepy demonic looking hands. To stop them from killing the family the father had to finally let go and realize it wasn't his fault his wife died. he did this by throwing his ashes away low budget and nothing interesting not worth the time so i dont know why it got a 5.9
