The Breakfast Slash
flurbinflarbin11 January 2021
Fun but mediocre school slasher. The middle aged people like me might enjoy how reminiscent it is of The Breakfast Club. Not that great but I still found it entertaining!

Good!!

I actually think this is one of the better episodes. They've had some right crappy ones, but this is a little more up my street. I agree with the other review that it was predictable and the acting not so great, but I still liked it. I think if the main girl were a better actress or if someone else had been cast, it may have been a little more engaging.

Pretty good soft slasher
jeremiahlhorton7 August 2019
The film's title is a metaphor and the story is pretty straight forward l. The characters aren't that likable, but the young victims and their obvious internal battles outside of the setting make them kind of likable. The blood and gore is a hit or miss. Not too much, but not too little. Some of the kills seem censored or happened too fast to notice and not worth the R-rating it was given. The best thing about the film is that they truly act like teenagers and wander off from the crew only to get slaughtered; but they're not as curious until the obvious shows. Not much is revealed until the very end. There's a slap on your face at the closing of the film. It's unique and definitely something I would do if I were a high school graduate. It's a great film for teens preferably 16-19 and young adults who just want time to pass while watching a pretty decent film-a-sode Hope you enjoy.

This is a very well paced and thought out film that is worth a watch

Warning: Spoilers
School Spirit (2019) is another Into the Dark horror movie I recently watched off Hulu. The storyline is very "Breakfast Club" like where kids show up to detention with an over zealous Vice principal with a drinking problem in a school that has a history of kids disappearing in it. As the kids sneak out of detention they begin running into a mascot in the hallways that ensures the kids never return to detention again. This movie is directed by Mike Gan (Burn) and stars Annie Q. (The Leftovers), Corey Fogelmanis (Ma), Jessi Case (Mother's Day), Julian Works (Titans) and Julia Aks (John Wick 3). This is a fun movie to watch unfold, primarily due to the engaging characters and the interest in seeing what heinous acts the pending valedictorian did to get herself in detention (and if it ties to the killings). The concept for the villain is actually pretty funny and fun. The kill sequences are just okay but not so poor you don't enjoy the film. This is a very well paced and thought out film that is worth a watch. I'd score it a solid 6/10.

Forgettable but not terrible....
inexplicable00722 August 2019
Unfortunately this movie won't be winning any awards anytime soon. It's also not scary at all so it should not be listed as a horror movie. The school is haunted by a malevolent evil spirit who haunts "bad kids", the look of this evil spirit is almost laughable along with the ridiculous death scenes. I'm Being generous with my scoring because I've seen worse movies however the production, set and scenery looked good so it didn't have that D list horror level going on and to me the writing of the actors was actually very well done. It's puzzling, the movie did a great job fleshing out the characters and I think they did a great job, especially the Vice Principal character so I'm confused as to how they managed to write such a weak and lazy plot altogether. The acting and the polished look on screen saves this from being in no man's land for me however I wouldn't watch it again.

It's good as a "student film". Falls short as a serious flick.
nfg2514 August 2019
Right away it's unbelievably obvious that they couldn't get extras to make it seem like a real school-year; so they wrote in the scapegoat of "weekend detention". Although that doesn't explain away the construction fences that you can see in the beginning, clear indication that they got in during Summer renovations. Not a bad idea to secure locations, just get the fences out of your shots.

All the characters are 1-dimensional, with each of them representing a cliche clique in schools. They try to come together, but it seems forced and superficial. You really don't care about any of them, because the characters are either unlikable, or the 'nice ones' never seem like they're really in danger. The one and only faculty member isn't any less of a stereotype.

At one point the director opted to skip the music and let the terror of the haunting try to hold suspense on it's own. It failed. Hard.

At this point Blumhouse/Into the Dark is just giving us monthly classes on how NOT to make horror movies. Get some friends drinking and have a laugh at the incongruities of these, and just enjoy yourselves :)

Not the worst, not the best

That pretty much sums it up. It's entertaining enough but predictable. There are worse entries in this series.

Bad acting and writing
eborella6316 August 2019
The movie is so boring and predictable. The girl who survive at the end should have been killed first and then maybe the movie could survive a little longer than 10 minutes. The acting was horrible, not one actor/actress did a good job, they should go to acting school first.. What a waste of time.

Not bad!
chaosbaron19 April 2020
To start, I always appreciate when young characters actually look young. The characters themselves were decent. I didn't like them, but I am not sure I am supposed to. They are after all a bunch of teenagers spending time in detention. Some time is given to character development, which is appreciated in a slasher film. The actors I felt put forth a reasonably good experience. The twist was fairly expected.. but the ending was fairly good anyhow with final character revelations, some nice lighting, and a great pick for a song by J-LO and K-Ci.

Cheesy

This is a silly, indie, cheesy horror version of the breakfast club. They tried. Failed...but tried.

Predictable, but a guilty pleasure
hnt_dnl16 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The slasher movie is one of my favorite sub-genres of horror, so it's nice to have a series like this where each episode is basically a feature-length film and the random episode like this one comes along that feeds into my slashing needs! lol SCHOOL SPIRIT Is a blatant homage to The Breakfast Club: 5 students and their principal in detention on a Saturday closely mimicking the characters from the original film. Erica=Claire, Brett=Brian, Lizzy=Alison, Victor=Bender, and Russ=Andy. There is also a 6th teen Jason, a jock who is not part of the detention crew and is only at school for football practice and the case could be made he's an Andy too as he is Erica's former boyfriend and part of her clique. The best character is actually the Vice Principal, who is virtually the same as Paul Gleeson's bitter, vitriolic, confrontational character from TBC. His acting is a cut above the rest, which is to be expected as he's obviously a veteran. But I thought the chemistry among the 5 detention kids was good enough. They were not exactly like their TBC counterparts.

There were twists, most notably that this is the slasher version of TBC, where there is a killer on the loose who has been responsible for the disappearance for students over the years and the start of the film we see him or her snatch 2 students who were breaking in the school to pull a prank. Flash forward a year to our story of the 5 kids in detention, with Erica as the protagonist. She's the straight-A student council president who can do no wrong, but she did something to get her thrown in detention. This is treated as a mystery throughout the film. The other 4 tease and prod her to get her to open up and let loose. As the film wears on, the group bonds just like TBC. The group theorizes as to what could have happened to the missing students from a year earlier and Victor comes up with this theory that it's the ghost of a teacher that was murdered there 10 years earlier.

The outcome of the flick was completely predictable to me, but I didn't care as I enjoy slasher movies, so bring on all the clichés. In fact, the predictability added to my enjoyment because I braced myself for the conclusion. And I found all the characters pretty likable and the story to move briskly. Making it a twisted version of TBC actually enhanced the plot as the story could go to darker places than that film was allowed to. I found the climax to be very well done. One of my favorite episodes of the season.

Oriented on classic teenie horror, this one is well executed and a short funtime
patrickfilbeck23 September 2021
The idea is not very new, but the premise is fun and well executed. The characters aren't over the top like in so many other episodes of Into the Dark and the finale is one of the few of this series which is a real climax and not a letdown. So surely watachable.

Not a horror thriller based on Breakfast Club.
misschris-112671 September 2019
It could have been fun. They had a great movie to play off of, (Breakfast Club), but no. Just awful that's all I can say. The lines are bad and the set up is worse. These young actors were fine but they only had so much to work with. Such a shame really. It could have been another Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Save yourself the trouble and don't bother watching it.

Everything you should expect
dar041725 March 2021
Another solid entry in the Into the Dark series of films or shows. This one brings The Breakfast Club and Scream together quite well. The kills are bloody enough and so over the top that it keeps your interest. The ending is predictable and impossible. That being said keep in mind it does follow a lot of the stereotypes of a slasher film. So watch at your own risk.

Warning: Spoilers
If you have nothing else to watch and are bored it's a good pick. The acting was pretty good, I mean an actor can only do so much with a mediocre script. What I do want to know is who the hell opened up the doors in the end?!

Worst one yet
illuminatilights014 August 2019
I see why they tried to create hype around this before its release...because it certainly wasn't going to garnish any on its own merits. Acting is horribly stilted, the plot is predictable and the writing may have actually come from a high schooler.

Decent watch!
ravenhair7021 November 2022
Looking for a good movie...even a decent movie is hard to find these days. SO much crap to sort from. The trailers you watch and see the immediate cheese right away...ugh! But this trailer was worthy of the watch. No cheese...decent acting and I liked it right away and selected it for my wife's and I to watch on movie night. A group of kids are selected to earn detention first week of the year and they are locked in by their vice-principal. Soon after, the kids start telling stories of the school spirit that makes the bad kids of the school vanish. Kids soon start to go missing and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who the "School spirit" is. Kinda obvious, but I'll leave you to watch the movie and decide for yourself. It's a really good watch...A whodunit if you will. I love those. It's really worth the watch, guys. Peace.

I feel like the only people that would like this film are high school students themselves. Very predictable, acting wasn't very good same with writing. Imo worst one so far.

Nope.
rennymaniquis23 January 2021
This movie lacked... suspense. There wasn't a lot of "horror" in the movie, rather it was mostly just drama. Like 3/4 of the movie is just them about their school lives. If the story focused more on the serial killer, I would've given this a higher rating.

Also this plot was too basic. Just a simple murder mystery on a Saturday at school. Nothing too special.

The Killer
myra-031448 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Imma say who it is in here so be warned. Watch the movie before reading this though because it will sound better once you have seen it. So basically after the first kill (during detention) it is pretty easy to figure out who it is and it is made even more obvious as the movie goes on. For anyone who has seen whodunnits such as Scream you know that whoever leaves for an extended period of time without being followed on screen is the killer. Basically the killer fit the checklist right after that first disgusting kill in the classroom. One of two people who went off on their own but the only one tall enough to fit the profile so based off of that you pretty much know who it is. The movie is at its best once the killer is revealed. The whole motive scene in the cellar of the school is the best part. The actor who portrays the killer sold the creepy factor with his goofy smiles while explaining his motive. Brett (the shy, quiet guy who has a crush on Erica) is the killer. His mom was the teacher who was killed by the "bad kids" years earlier so in revenge he now kills the bad kids even though none of the kids in detention were even part of his mother's death. He has an Erica shrine and talks about his mom as if she were still alive and even has her skeleton dressed up as her. Very Norman Bates of him. Eventually though Erica outsmarts him and stabs him while being kind of mean. Kind of makes you feel bad for him for a millisecond but then again he is serial killer. The movie even though it was predictable was fun to watch. After I figured it out I would have given up but I stayed to confirm that it was actually Brett. It was worth it though because once he reveals to Erica and Lizzy that he is the school spirit things really start to get good. Out of all of the teen characters he by far has the strongest performance as he was able to go from the shy, nervous teenage boy to the shy, nervous and teenage sociopath before you can even say school spirit. Based off of his personality before the reveal you might have been like really? Him? Then you seen him put the axe in Lizzy's head and realize that this is for real. He was the most interesting one to watch in the movie because he went from "is he going to get the girl?" to "wow he is a major sociopath". Yes it was not hard to figure out that it was Brett but waiting until the end to see if you were right and then watching the last twenty minutes is worth watching the rest of the movie. No it is not a movie like The Breakfast Club or Scream that you can watch over and over again. The last twenty minutes though is something that you can watch again and again. The Norman Bates-esque character and the seemingly perfect A+ student going back and forth is strong and makes the movie a lot better. I would watch it again just for that scene alone. So if you have not seen it and read this whole thing watch it.

Fun, well acted, thoughtless screenplay
oznjerz17 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was fun to watch. However one thought kept going through my head that spoiled the entire episode.

SPOILERS:

Kids in detention, one shared she was in for pulling the fire alarm. After that, students go missing, vice principal locked the doors, (previous dialog regarding manual labor) contained dialog "that's illegal" "you can't do this/that/the other thing". No mention of illegality of locking students in.

Oh, the constant thought I had for 80% of the episode was: "this would be a good time to pull the fire alarm".

School Spirit
bobcobb3011 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It was fun for what it was: The Breakfast Club with murder. A nice little "twist" with Erica Yang actually being a cheater, but these Into the Dark movies are just nonsensical gore with no story whatsoever. There was so much more they could have done with the idea of a spirit haunting the school than this.

Stupid teen slasher pic
TheTruthofItIs5 May 2020
Feature-length bore-fest with whiny unattractive detentioned teens picked off one by one by an unlikely "school spirit". Will appeal only to those immature enough yet not old enough to view it. Director Mike Gan's first project beyond video shorts, so it's not done by someone who knows what they're doing - doesn't even make sense in several spots. The final dance scene stabbing was just wholly unlikely, so there's just plausibility problems throughout. Wasted effort.

Nothing special, but worth the watch
korythacher17 October 2022
Bottom line: School Spirit was worth the watch for me. It's a stock slasher film that is generally forgettable, but isn't a bad watch, and that was what I expected. If that's what you're after, you'll probably enjoy it too.

Gore level is pretty low for anyone concerned with that.

It doesn't feel like a B-horror, it's just a standard "breakfast club"-style slasher flick. The pacing, production values, and lighting are all decent for the most part.

At the end of the day there isn't a ton of stuff to complain about, but there also isn't anything memorable. There are a couple fun kills, but most of them are boring and done off screen. The cast is alright, but the majority of the script isn't very good so the dialogue is lacking. The "twists" are predictable, but fun.

Some of the logic and the murky timeline don't stack up well, but not enough to really bug me for the kind of movie this is and the expectations I had going in. I'm not going out of my way to recommend it for people, but if you like slashers then this one is good enough!

Good episode - A sequel would be appreciated.
JamesRutland8 September 2020
I like this episode of into the Dark I hope in a sequel where the School Spirit rise again in order to fight the latest of the bad student who defeated "him" because of the scam in its double life.
