So bad it's hilarious
nindabob5 April 2020
Seriously, this movie is so badly made I genuinely laughed in delight.

Science Mom and Ex-army Dad need to get Tech Nerd Son and Daughter With No Actual Characteristic Beyond Being The Daughter to safety because a big solar storm is causing volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes that are oddly localised to LA. I know this was likely intended to be a serious action movie, but it is so horrendously bad that it loops back around to brilliance.

At one point what is supposed to be heavy debris is clearly papier-mache. A man gets a tsunami to the face. Lava somehow manages to sneak up on people. Everyone is oddly chill, and I spotted at least one actor trying not to laugh. At one point two characters that were in the middle of nowhere suddenly appear in the city. The acting is so bad that Tommy Wiseau seems like Meryl Streep in comparison. Budget was apparently half a million but looks like it was at most ten dollars and a coke.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Would recommend watching while in an altered state of consciousness.

bet you can't make it to the end
That_1_guy3 January 2019
For a movie released in late 2018 everything about it sucked, acting was almost as bad as some christain productions, the soundtrack was about as creative as the music you hear when your put on hold during a phone call to your family doctor, and the CGI appeared to be outsourced to some high school kids. Good luck to any potential future audience members.

Don't even bother with "End of the World"...
paul_haakonsen28 January 2019
Right, well I knew that when I sat down to watch the 2018 "End of the World" movie, that I was 99% likely to be in for an hour and a half of questionable disaster movie.

And that I was...

This movie was earthshakingly bad to the very core. The storyline in the movie, while easy to follow, was just so idiotic and unrealistic that it wasn't even fun to watch the movie. A lot of the bad disaster movies out there, at least are so fundamentally bad that they are actually laughable and fun to watch in a very odd and morbid way. That was not the case with "End of the World"; it was just downright bad.

The entire series of events were just too random, and it made absolutely no sense that it was centered around the family of four - those that were the main protagonists of the movie. Plus the movie was just lacking scenes of random destruction and such to make it seem like the events were on a grander scale and not just centered upon following the four main characters.

The special effects and CGI in the movie, well... Let's just give them credit for trying to make something unique and memorable. It was memorable, sure, but not as for being something positive and outstanding. Sadly no, the special effects in the movie were questionable at best. But hey, at least they tried.

As for the acting in the movie. Well, you know what you are getting yourself into with a movie such as this. And they did deliver on that account, for better or worse. But take into consideration that the acting performers had next to nothing to work with in terms of a proper script, dialogue or special effects. And that was painstakingly visible on the screen.

If you enjoy natural disaster movies, like I do, then give "End of the World" a wide berth, because it is just not worth it. There are far better disaster movies available out there on the market, despite them being few and far in between.

Still Better Than Watching Super Bowl 53
prbeauty-099915 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Watched this after Super Bowl 53 knowing it was going to be terrible. I never laughed so hard watching my city of Riverside, CA be destroyed. Then you take a chopper from March Air Force Base trying to save you family LOL. Then there is lava going down Magnolia Ave. I was so entertained by not how bad it was but by how my city gets destroyed and it being better than watching the Super Bowl.

Couldn't wait till the end of the movie.
stansevostyanov27 January 2019
One thing that this movie has going for it is that it doesn't fail to surprise. With every single passing minute I just keep thinking "it can't get worse than this, now can it?" Oh, yes it can and it does so progressively.

If you start counting "cinema sins" you'd probably come the conclusion that this movie is a demon from hell.

Don't watch it. Just don't. There's nothing to gain and there are better bad movies to waste your time on.

Terrible Disaster Movie, Excellent Comedy
highpitchedpirates2 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
If you're looking for a good disaster film, this is not it, however if you're looking for something to laugh at, then it's a good choice.

The writing was absolutely ridiculous and the CGI, I have no words.

Spoiler:

It was so very kind of the lava to stop flowing while Father and Daughter had a pointless convesation in the front yard while the house behind them continued to fall down, possibly with her friend/friend's family still trapped inside.

THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER
davidaherrera3 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE. I REALLY HOPE THEY MAKE A SEQUEL. THE ACTING WAS TOP NOTCH AND I WAS SO IMPRESSED BY THE SPECIAL EFFECTS. THE ACTING WAS GREAT AND I WAS SO ENGROSSED BY THE STORY. IT WAS SO DRAMATIC. THESE ACTORS DESERVE AN OSCAR. THE BEST SCENE WAS THE LAST SCENE. IT WAS SO WELL PUT TOGETHER. A REAL CLIFFHANGER. ALSO FOR A SEQUEL THEY NEED TO ADD SHARKS OR SOMETHING OR LIKE SOME CRAZY DISEASE THAT MAKES PEOPLE INTO ZOMBIES. I WAS REALLY GLAD THEY SHOWED HOW DESTRUCTIVE LAVA IS. BUT OUR 4 HEROES SURVIVED THAT, BEING STRUCK BY LIGHTNING, AND ELECTROCUTED. I am not sure why everyone gave this movie such low ratings. I loved it. It delivered on what I was expecting and the main older actors came through perfectly. The daughter got on my nerves. She asked too many dumb questions and instead of keeping the pace to get to the caves, she seemed to whine a lot. The son was also excellent. That is why 10/10 stars was received from me. The movie was very entertaining and it delivered. GO TRUMP.

Soooo bad it's good
mike-284067 October 2019
I've been watching crappy worlds ending movies, and loving the terrible SFX and acting. Still amazes me the special kind of crap that can be produced for 0.5 million and makes it onto Amazon Prime - they have some excellent original content (Goliath, The Boys Carnival Row etc...) but I guess lacking in quantity they just purchase your garden variety junk. Good for killing 90 mins if you are bored or drunk ( I was) a poor mans San Andreas style movie. On a positive note, several great racks and a few good nips on display from the female cast - not a lot of redeeming features from the males...

Has to be watched as a comedy
Leofwine_draca8 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
END OF THE WORLD is another cheesy, unintentionally hilarious disaster movie from those hardworking folk at The Asylum. Once again it follows the same cookie-cutter template as the rest of this studio's disaster flicks: a top scientist is ignored by their peers and forced to rush their family to a place of safety when disaster strikes. This one has an all-round string of disasters rocking everywhere, so expect heroic death, exploding vehicles, and as much zero budget destruction as is humanly possible on a budget stretching to around a hundred bucks. Ludicrous overemoting, slow motion, bad writing and mindless plotting are the order of the day here, so accompanying alcohol is advised.

Exactly what you'd expect from Asylum Studios
aperfectmatch27 January 2019
You know how it goes with Asylum. Take a well made blockbuster movie and rip the pants out of it with 3rd rate effects and 2nd rate actors, A rainy sunday afternoon movie when there's absolutely nothing else to watch on Tv.

The opposite of good.

The drinking game to go with this movie should be to take a drink every time you think about not watching the rest of the movie. The worst CGI I've ever seen, they didn't even try.

Really bad!
julieekish24 April 2019
I love a good disaster movie. I usually enjoy it even if it isn't all that good. But this movie is really bad. Ridiculously bad special effects. Hokey dialogue filled with cliches. Some of the acting was okay but the script was so bad the actors didn't have much to work with. Lots of continuity errors-the father and daughter are walking in the woods, safely away from the city and the next moment they are back in the city. What the hell! Then they're supposed to be running from a volcano but they begin to stroll at a leisurely pace so they can have a heart to heart chat. The whole thing is ridiculous.

Came on to IMDB to see if anyone else thought this movie was made as a joke? Made in 2018? I saw better special effects on Thunderbirds. It's really quite fascinating.

Riveting
gwynmoses12 July 2020
Riveting, in the sense that it is like rivets being shot into your head. As a Sunday morning SyFy film it's perfectly adequate viewing, but often grabs your attention and you have to rewind to check that the special effects really were at the level of 1950s stop go animation. The lack of continuity should place this film on any university course as a case study of what happens when it is totally ignored. Acting and characterisation were entirely adequate, but would have been helped by having a semblance of a plot to work to.

Why 2 stars - well, it is eminently more watchable than some of the dreary romance stuff you get on some film channels, which are not even worth reviewing.

Finally, as a serious question, what does a "second second assistant director" do?

Know your terrain
nogodnomasters5 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is the standard Asylum formula for the end of the world disaster. World coming to an end, the family is divided and then try to get together. Only a family member knows what is going on or can save the world. The military is involved and this time it is Sallieu Sesay instead on John Rhys-Davies. For some reason, a defibrillator used over the clothes missed the feature.

The picture opens with a solar storm warning. CME stands for Coronal Mass Ejection. California has an earthquake, volcano, sinkhole, and CG fire. Mom tries to get everyone into caves for the coming earthquakes. We do get to see someone pushed out of the way of a lightning bolt (about 1/3 of the speed of light...think fast!)

Not as good as the ones with ice in them or Gimli.

No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Bad writing just bad writing.
greyes-0026225 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Is there anything good about this movie. Some of it wasn't that bad. The Science behind the theme. But that is about it.

The parents are truly bad parents. How can you raise kids who become idiots at the peak of a disaster? The boy is semi useful but not until three quarters of the movie is done with. The girl should have just died. She was that bad. It is a wonder she didn't get her dad killed during all of her freeze ups and cries of "I'm scared." Seriously girl. Move it or lose it. People like this are going to die even if you have someone looking out for them. Very few young people are this helpless.

The Main Character. Her focus is all over the place. Save your family, no save as many people as possible. Go to the caves for safety, no go to the military base to go to the caves for safety. She ignores the Mayor's assistant when all of the disasters start to come and fails to alert her she should at least go to a military base if it gets worse. But during the movie she stops to help three people in the middle of an earthquake? She seems like she has common sense one minute than overwhelmed by emotions he next. It is hard to identify with her.

Her Husband. Really. Ex military and you didn't teach your kids to have a sense of survival skills? Your motto is never give up but that seems to be your kids first choice is to cover their head and hope for the best.

Brother... Your dependence on your mom is not healthy. You look like your a man but act like your 12. Did you not learn anything from your father?

Sister. My God she makes me want to throw up. I would have slapped her twelve times over. As you stand there doing nothing the lava, Lighting, floods and earthquakes are getting closer. What do you not understand here?

All of this is the writers fault. Human beings are meant to be survivors. While you are having the kids be weak for drama sake, you are frustrating your audience who want to see action from people not from the CGI. CGI is used to heighten the movie not be the movie.

At some point the kids are going to have survival mode kick in. I would wager is would have been much much sooner than this. Teens would have been on those streets in those cars of theirs racing to get out of the city. Traffic should have been featured in all of this. How can streets be empty at one point than you see only a few cars in the background? Where are the police and emergency services? Whoever wrote the screenplay on this shouldn't be allowed to ever write for another movie ever again.

Horrible Movie
pinoycouponer28 January 2019
I really didn't finish the movie. I believe I stopped at the part where the boy is trying to start the helo. Other than that, bad acting, and the graphics are horrible. I would suggest and watch 2012 better. I think 2012 is the best disaster movie with John Cusack. I would have to be honest but the daughter was really, really annoying. Even the dad was frustrated and yelled that one time at her. But yeah, this is considered not a great 2018 movie. Good luck, and great I didn't finish it at all.

good story, for its time
bellathorp25 July 2022
I think this movie was re-made under the title 2012.

The storyline is basically the same.

Considering the time this was made, i think they did the best they could to tell the story.

Test run with overkill on special effects
drystyx24 September 2021
This end of the world "disaster" movie looked too formula from the get go, which isn't a bad thing, because the lead characters are likable enough to care about, but the "formula" became overkill.

A lot of things work well. The hard cuts instead of fades, which is to denote a semblance of no time passing, but which I like in any case, because I am not a fan of fade moves. I'm glad that wasn't overused here.

But what really struck me was the extreme use of special effects and many camera angles. In fact, there were so many dolly shots, pans, ups, downs, tilts, that it's obvious they were experimenting, or doing a "test run movie" to enhance director and camera skills.

That doesn't make it bad. Not saying that. It's watchable, and the characters are likable, as I said.

What really made me go down with a low score was the overkill of special effects. Old Broccoli 007 films knew how to alternate between effects, action, wit, and dialog to keep one interested.

That "rotation" is lost with today's movie maker. We have "mechanics" making movies instead of artists.

I have nothing against his movie. In fact, it would get two more stars from me if it didn't overkill on the effects. And I realize that is the modern trend, to make movies that make a viewer feel like he is in a Vegas slot machine room, but that's a tired feeling for me.

As for the camera angles, I think they did a splendid job. Too splendid. This is "mechanics trying to be artists".

Good mechanics. Not so great artists.
