They made it work
danieldomecq28 September 2019
The first 90% of this episode made it appear that Henry Winkler had put on his water skis, but they managed to pull it together at the end and gave us a wonderful twist. So we'll give them another chance next week.

This is a show that may have reached an unprecedented high mark for television in its first two seasons, giving us novel concepts with spot-on execution. And the twists and turns along the way would have impressed William Goldman. But it was such a high concept that you wondered if they'd be able to sustain it. And while season three certainly had some really high moments, the original premise started to appear difficult for the writers to continue to create from.

They've announce that this is the last season, so more than likely they'll bring their A-game back. Fingers crossed.

They get 8 stars mainly because of the good will they built up from previous episodes, and from what -- you gotta hand it to them -- was a pretty clever twist at the end of this episode. You figured they'll pull something, but didn't see this coming at all.

And of course the acting was right on it.

I guess ....no...that was pretty lame.

Not only did we not get the usual double long first episode..But we also got 2 recaps that take up 6 minutes of the show...making the actual length like 15 minutes....yikes. And what happens in that time...pretty much nothing. Stuff happens but we cut past it and get the oh so briefest of explanations for it. What a strange way to start the final season.

Starting over redux

Warning: Spoilers
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the fourth season has a rating of 100%, based on 21 reviews, with an average rating of 8.33/10.

This is a promising way to start season 4 (and the season finale) of The Good Place which is starting all over again redux. Chidi's lack of memory about his friends was quite emotional.

Strong start

I had no idea where the episode was going. Most of series 3 was a let down for me but this was as good as series 1 and 2. Twists and turns all the way through. Great acting as always . I enjoyed Derek taking more of a lead role. I cannot wait for the next episode.

A step in the right direction, but slowly The Good Place drifts away.

Warning: Spoilers
The 3rd season of this show was something of a disappointment for me. It was an obvious departure from the charming and often absurd show that I had fallen in love with from the first episode, with that charm sacrificed for a rather profound statement about mankind in the present day. I was underwhelmed and wanted to get back to what this show used to be.

To some extent I got that. This episode returned to the 'Good Place' as such, and there was a glimmer of hope. We were back to the creative and at times wacky humour that audiences have come to expect from this show and I appreciated that.

Unfortunately, what holds this episode back is the baggage that the series has accumulated over time. At this stage, the intricacies of the experiment set up at the end of the last season, as well as the relationships between the characters themselves are far too complicated, and we are provided with little information that actually helps us understand what is going on.

In the end, this episode of The Good Place marks an improvement over the majority of last season, but fails to provide its viewers with a clear idea of what the season will be about.
