British TV kids movie
SnoopyStyle22 February 2021
Tom is stuck in a boarding school while his parents are in the Middle East. He is sent to an odd hospital after getting knocked out in a cricket game. He is recovering in a room with kids from different backgrounds while suffering the wimps of a weird medical staff. The kids call themselves The Midnight Gang.

This is a British TV movie based on a children's book. It's definitely inspired by Roald Dahl material. It's dark. It's weird. It doesn't have quite as much charm as Dahl. Nevertheless, it has enough to be interesting. The balloons are fun. This will do for a random rainy weekend afternoon.

Ooh Matron!
Prismark1020 January 2019
The Midnight Gang is based on the book by David Walliams. It really sees Walliams going for the Roald Dahl vibe.

Tom gets hit on the head by a cricket ball and finds himself in the Children's Ward at St Hugo's Hospital. The matron dislikes children but she likes shoes. The porter looks scary and Raj the shopkeeper is at the hospital with damaged fingers. Raj has managed to brings his sweeties with him for sale.

The young doctor treating Tom is new and nervous. When the cruel headmaster turns up to take Tom back to school, Tom manipulates his temperature to stay in at the ward.

The reason is that the children in the ward have a Midnight Gang that tries to make dreams come true.

The Midnight Gang has enough anarchic fun and heart that kids will enjoy. The adult actors play it broad apart from Mark Heap, who actually dials it down a tone here.

However Walliams owes Roald Dahl a debt.

LOVED IT!

A truly wonderful movie, perfectly matching the book. Would recommend this to anyone! Book = a page-turner, movie = a laugh out loud and blast of family fun! One thing surprising me: was lead to believe the porter was David Walliams as well as the headmaster, having never seen Alan Davies. Anyone thought the same thing? Hit the thumbs up if yes. Hope you all enjoy it
