Grim and authentic
scrubber31 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The horror of Auschwitz is filmed in a straight forward way which looks authentic. This true story tells of two men who escape to tell the world of the horrors that are occuring in the camp. They hide in an outbuilding under the floor adjacent to piles of dead bodies for a few days until the guards give up searching for them. Only then, after this harrowing experience, do they make their escape. This actually appeared remarkably easy crawling under the outer fence during the darkness of night. They then have to make there way to the Polish border through remote countryside, where they eventually meet some helpful locals. They get a meeting with John Hannah, the only actor I have seen before, who represents the Red Cross. He presents them with a red cross parcel saying I suppose you have seen loads of these, to which they reply, no. Only then does some realisation dawn on Hannah that the negotiatons with the German authorities have resulted in complete lies about the camp. None of the 400,000 parcels the red cross presented have been delivered! Even though at war with Germany the Nazi propaganda machine was still able to deceive. The rumours relating to Auschwitz were so horrific they couldn't possibly be true. A grim story but effective and well worth viewing.

A must-watch World War II movie...
paul_haakonsen20 September 2021
Well, first of all, if you sit down to watch the 2021 movie "The Auschwitz Report" with the hopes of it being a classic World War II movie, then you are in for a rude awakening. This is not a war movie about troops fighting on the land, air or sea, no this is a movie about the two people that managed to escape the horror of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and compile a report about the location and the events that took place there.

"The Auschwitz Report" is a slow paced movie, but it is an entertaining movie nonetheless. However, I doubt that writers Peter Bebjak, Tomás Bombík and Jozef Pastéka's 2021 movie is one that will easily fall into everyone's liking though. And while the movie does take place in one of history's most vile and loathsome places, then director Peter Bebjak actually manages to keep the movie relatively free of the atrocities committed there, but at the same time you know very well about the horrors that took place.

I enjoyed this movie given the historical aspect to the storyline, and also because it was based on actual events.

The movie does have some good acting performances by the cast, though I were only familiar with John Hannah of all the actors and actresses that were in the movie. I will say that actors Noel Czuczor and Peter Ondrejicka definitely carried the movie quite well with their performances.

I suppose that a movie such as this is one that can be difficult for some viewers to sit through.

"The Auschwitz Report" is a movie that you have to watch if you have an interest in World War II, and especially so if you have an interest in the events that took place at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

My rating of "The Auschwitz Report" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Shocking
jbmenin24 August 2021
I have valued the film for the story it tells and not for things like photography, or the use of the camera, the actors who should be much thinner etc. As they say - "The only thing that is needed for the evil to triumph is for the good to do nothing." The speeches that are heard at the end of the film are supposed to be dated 1942-1946 or around that time, but I still hear many people say the same things today, which makes me think that the word " humanity "should be reassessed and questioned, since apparently we have not evolved much in the last 80 years.

Great story and sadly it actually happened.

Difficult to watch but I do it to honor the sacrifices made
sfdphd4 January 2022
This was a painful film to watch. Most of the film focuses on the men in the camp and the two men trying to get out to contact the Resistance. They don't get to write the report or talk to anyone about what happened until the last 20 minutes of the film. The agony they suffer just to get to that point is excruciating.

And then it's a different kind of suffering to see that they are not believed because the enormity of the crime seemed incredible. The men must have felt so frustrated that they had risked everything to tell the truth and other men at the camp died helping them yet the outcome they wanted did not occur.

This film is about man's inhumanity to man. They did get some kindness on their journey otherwise they would not have survived so they had to be thankful for that.... But the larger tragedy is overwhelming...

A Wasted Opportunity

With an important story to tell and a strong cast "The Auschwitz Report" had the basis for a very good film. However, the many well-crafted scenes in the film never seem to gel as a coherent whole. The main flaws in the film are holes in sections of the script and awkward editing. The build up of tension in the plot seems to go nowhere, leading to a rushed and anti-climatic conclusion. Better films of this genre are "Schindler's List" and "The Counterfeiters".

Not the whole story
Richard-28-11967128 March 2022
To my opinion is this movie to far away from the actual report and story. It only focuses on the escape and not on the complete story. Ok. That might have been a too long story but the effect is that it doesn't do right to the actual report and story.

Good story, mediocre movie
activesilver4 May 2022
The movie has a strong story and its a good thing that it's being told.

But the shaky camera and weid camera angles are very annoying.

Also some very weird leaps in the story, at one point 1 guy is lost and a second later were in a very diffent spot and they're together again.

Too bad it's not a good movie, otherwise it could have been a classic film.

Excellent

The viewer knows they have watched something beyond spectacular when, how it is portrayed doesn't mean as much, as the message that is given.

Such a pity that it took over 80 years for this story to come to light however, at least it did; and may the decendents feel proud, for this enlightment.

Poorly filmed, but necessary to watch
CarolineFR6929 July 2022
With a title like this you know what you are getting yourself into, an introspection into one of the darkest periods in European History. The story is heavy, dark, hard to watch and hard to face. But it's a necessity.

The movie start with this quote by Edmund Burke 'Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it', and ends up with speeches from current politicians, talking about what they would want to do to foreigners, other faiths, lgbt+ people.. No music, no image, just faced with the awful truth.

As for the movie itself, the actors are good. I however didn't like how it was filmed, no steadycam at all, but most of all, scenes that looked like they were filmed from a smartphone, vertically. A lot of shaky images, hard to follow, things on the side, upside down... Which make things hard to follow. At one point the 2 real life heroes are hidden and watch a scene outside, you are supposed to feel anxious with them, but I couldn't tell you what happened in there since it was upside down for a while. It just didn't serve the story that needs to be told.

Horribly wasted opportunity

Warning: Spoilers
Firstly I'll say that this film is beautiful.

It's cinematography and acting are stunning.

The story is one that absolutely has to be told.

But they really really dropped the ball by making it only 90 minutes long. This film needed to be at least 3 hours long. Over half of this film was spent trying the viewer to feel as much pain as possible whilst Barrack 9 were being tortured. The escape it's self was literally them jumping under a fence. Their interactions with others were rushed and very unpolished, and ultimately the very message of the film became mostly an afterthought. It's bitterly disappointing that this film couldn't be more, show more, engage more, tell more and deliver more.

Great! Great! Great movie! I am passionate about German history, from Charlemagne to Merkel. But mainly I am passionate about the German 20th century including the study of the Holocaust, I have studied the subject for many years, I had not come across a film that described Auschwitz-Birkenau so well after having seen "The Son of Saul" another extraordinary film in this case from Hungary. Every detail of The Auschwitz Report is exciting and is an accurate story if you compare it with the 1985 testimonies of the documentary film Shoah by maestro Claude Lanzmann. What impressed me the most about this film was the light, an almost perfect art direction that makes you feel in the place without having to resort to computer effects. It is a 10/10 movie although it could add more points.

I got quite tired of the upsidedown and side angle camera views. Just went on too long. Was very distracting, other than that, it was very informative.

Mediocre movie with shaky cameras
HighlanderABC8 January 2022
This is a very mediocre World War II concentration camp movie compared with other good ones in similar topics. One thing I don't like the most is the shaky cameras in many scenes. It gives viewers headaches and nausea for no good reason. Go watch other great movies such as The Schindler's List, and many more out there.

A notable film about Auschwitz's camp of concentration, being splendidly played and competently directed.
ma-cortes16 January 2024
Impressive movie about the infamous concentration camp with realist setting , top-notch acting and evocative cinematography. This excellent movie deals with the horror of 1944 in Auschwitz , the infamous extermination center, capturing an insightful portrait of hell and the spiritual experience and focusing the fictionalized story of two prisoners attempting to escape, they are Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler. On 10 April 1944, after meticulous planning, and with the help and resilience of their inmates, they manage to escape. Based on the novel by Wetzler called 'What Dante did not See.' They hide for 3 days and escape once the search for them is over. They'll report their experiences about mass murders, Zyklon B and the astonishing work of the Sonderkommandos by executing the deadly and forced assignments.

A terrific and extraordinary movie dealing with the inferno of the camps of death located in Auschwitz. This is the true story of Freddy and Walter--two young Slovak Jews, who were deported to Auschwitz in 1942. While the inmates they had left behind, courageously stand their ground against Nazi officers, the two men are driven on by the hope that their evidence can save lives. Both of whom give a very good acting with their subjective vision, while the remaining prisoners are submitted to the brutality of a ruthless Nazi officer when he finds out about the escape . Emaciated and hurt, they make their way through the mountains back to Slovakia. With the help of chance encounters, they finally manage to cross the border and meet the resistance, and The Red Cross. They compile a detailed report about the systematic genocide at the camp, however, with Nazi propaganda and international liaisons still in place, their account seems to be too harrowing to believe. The movie gets a breathtaking and exciting getaway and it was well realized, developing compellingly the recreation of the escape from the Nazi Death Camp in Auschwitz.

A good work which is reminiscent in some aspects of that of the Hungarian László Nemes in his amazing ¨Son of Saúl¨. Indeed, Bebjak's directorial ¨The Auschwitz Report¨, also titled ¨Escape from Auschwitz¨, stands out for its conceptual approach. The story, of extraordinary simplicity but with sudden explosion of grisly violence, is at the service of cinema and not the other way around; in this way, the rules of representation are managed by the director, who has control of his proposal, establishing precise parameters that the viewer must absorb to understand the scope of the film. This terrible picture is well set in Auschwitz , it was a painful extermination camp of killing of Jews including children . We see horrors , murders , massacres against the prisoners but from a particular sight point of two escaped inmates.

It is a dark and serious flick co-produced by Slovakia/Czechia/Poland/Germany , a magnificent movie about the brutal existence at concentration camp and subsequent breakout from horrible place . The picture is based on real events , as Auschwitz along with Sobibór , Chelmno , Belzec and Treblinka were five large death camps in the Lublin district of Poland transformed into extermination centers to implement the policy of genocide thought at the Wannsee Conference . All the concentration camps were under the command of SS Odilo Globocnick . There was some minor industrial activity linked to the war effort but the main work was the execution of inmates . Victims were brought to the camp in unventilated transports , and all but a handful were gassed after arrival , the gas chambers could accommodate hundred prisoners at one time , most of their corpses were burned in open pits .

It contains a good though unknown cast - exception for the prestigious British actor John Hanna- giving vigorous performances. Shot on location in Slovakia and at the actual Auschwitz death camp, some of the existing structures were utilized in the production, however, the crematorium had to be recreated since the actual crematoria in Auschwitz were destroyed by the Nazis; the ruins still exist today. The picture was well made by Slovak director Peter Bebjak, whose work is more limited to television series and who has made some feature films, here he manages to consolidate constant originality, thanks to his brilliant direction.

Along with this ¨Escape from Auschwitz¨ (2021) , I would highlight other films about concentration camps that have left an important film footprint: ¨Escape from Sobibor¨ (1987) by Jack Gold, ¨Triumph of the Spirit¨ (1989) by Robert M. Young, ¨The Grey Zone¨(2001), ¨Son of Saul¨ (2015) by Laszlo Nemes and the best ¨The List Schindler¨ (1993) by Steven Spielberg.

Thoughtful, truthful, terrific movie
mgumsley18 September 2021
This is clearly a low budget film, but the story is so clear and horrifying that I was absorbed for every minute of the movie. The camera work defies description: it shows the awful conditions at Auschwitz/Birkenau, and as someone who has been to both camps, this is clearly Birkenau, where more Jews were slaughtered. The two escapees endured terrible conditions to dig their tunnel out, and their compatriots in Hut 9 endured terrible reprisals for their cover up of the escape.

When they did get back to Slovakia, the Red Cross had trouble believing them, as they were already delivering food parcels to the 'refugees' at Auschwitz and believed the Nazi propaganda. The sacrifices made by these people and others helped open the eyes of the Allies to what was really going on.

Because this was sub titled and partly in English, it is hard to judge the performances, but I was impressed throughout with this movie, especially the camera work which was truly outstanding, both in and outside the camp.

Read the book. Painful to watch. Seems like Peter Bebjak heard about the story from someone who knows someone who was talking with someone who read the book. Awful sound (as always with Bebjak's work). 2 stars for raising awareness, I guess?

The Price Of Being Human
LennardTeo16 September 2021
Every day when I wake, I know I can choose to be Good, or Bad, and whether I am good, or bad, there is a Price to pay. The Question is, "What am I going to do about it?"

This Movie is well done, with the occasional change in the camera view, to illustrate the Character's view, and perhaps how they are feeling psychologically.

In the end, and also my main thought of life, is if you have enough hope to live, you will be able do better than you imagine you can.

My heart always goes out to those whose lives were taken from them, and they never would have lived out their dreams. The Question is, "What are you going to do about it?"

(For some reason, the Opening Title is "The Auschwitz Escape", and more of the runtime was initially about the Escape, with the later part revealing some horrific details of the Vrba-Wetzler Report.)

This is based on a highly fictionalized story by Alfred Wetzler
jacksononthemoon20 July 2023
Wetzler, writing under the name of Jozef Lanik wrote this as fiction based on truth. Hence, his character is handsome and brave and the character based on the person, Rudolf Vrba, is portrayed as weak and not particularly handsome. (he was very handsome).

Wetzler says they brought a Zyklon B label as proof, when in fact, they brought nothing with them other that what they had memorized.

In the movie, they meet the Red Cross. In real life, they were helped to get to Zilina, where they met Jewish Community leaders and in the basement of an old folks home, they were interrogated separately and their joint testimony is what created the Vrba Wetzler Report.

There are too many falsehoods in this movie to give it a higher rating, but having said that, it was quite entertaining, just as long as you do not believe it.

Read the book instead...much better!
porcgi27 November 2022
John Freedland's book..'The Escape Artist' gives a much more detailed account of the escape and the aftermath. I looked forward to this film but was hugely disappointed as it never even really scraped the surface of the story. As a stand alone film it lacked so much and failed to hold my attention...a poor script and strange camera work were the biggest culprits. This could be made into a good mini - series given the right director and team behind it. As others have noted, this was missed opportunity which does not add to the body of historical based films surrounding the genre. Do yourself a favour and read the book!

Those that deny history will repeat it.
rabmab-405951 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The film conveys the desperation and hope coming out of hopelessness. While portraying the inhumanity of a particular time in history, the film reminds us that people committing violence may hold a self-righteous belief that what they are doing is correct. The sound clips of speeches and hateful statements, from the past to the present, devolve into a cacophony of voices that serve as an admonition that the same impulses behind the Holocaust are still with us today.

Took forever to get to the point
qui_j19 June 2023
This appears to be a low budget movie that was filmed using a iPhone or similar device. The first half of the movie seems to concentrate on being some kind of Arthouse offering. Scenes just don't seem to follow on naturally and the editing just jumbles and confuses the story. The camera work focuses on strange angles and the audio track is very poor. The story just does not come across as coherent and lacks substance. The second half is just set in the same location with repetitive events that really drive viewers to boredom. It is easy to lose interest and just stop watching. The "fast forward" button becomes your friend and helps you get to the end where the final result is learned. Overall, a very boring adaptation of an important event in WW2.

Dark, tense, horrible to watch but altogether brilliant.

Warning: Spoilers
Let me start by saying that I've watched a lot of war films and films about the concentration camps. However, not one has disturbed me as much as this film, I just couldn't stop the tears rolling down my cheeks as I was watching it.

More unbelievably is how the two Slovak men were not believed when they finally were able to shed light on the atrocities happening at Auschwitz, and it took a further several months before reports started to get published.

I would strongly advise everyone to watch this film so you can understand the appalling treatment of the Jewish people.

We must learn from history and certainly not forget it.

Excellent film. I have visited these camps and spoken to people who were there and the stories you hear are the worst of human history. People complaining that the title credits were woke. What you are listening to are the types of comments that led to these camps becoming what they were. As it says in Auschwitz 1, those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it.

A genuine story of two WW2 heroes
Erik_Surewaard25 March 2022
This true story is a must see for anyone interested in WW2 history. The writers put a lot of effort to make the story correct. Even when it would result in the movie coming dull at some times. Especially the last 30 minutes of the movie were slowgoing. The part of the movie that covered what happened in the camp was however more than sufficient to still give this movie a 7-star rating.

I wish there were more of these movies that show the horrors that took place during WW2. Especially in the current-day climate of increasing tensions between the "west" and "east", people should know how horrible wars can be.
