The Magician's Nephew of Season Three
TheFearmakers4 October 2019
Going back, literally, to where it all begins... Not the series itself, but this season, that did start rather abruptly and if you miss the usual L.A. atmosphere including the motel and Billy's favorite bar hangout, it's here, and initially somewhat confusing since there's no title card letting us know we're backtracking, and right when the present-time story started to roll, kind of... which is obviously intentional...

Warning: Spoilers
The time jumps are a bit confusing this season, but this episode was crazy and, for the first time this season, in a good way.

It seemed like they put the seeds in place and tried to explain things, but overall the writers could have done a better job explaining these characters and their motivations. I think I am not the only one who is a little lost four episodes in.

My head's spinning!

This episode feels like all the clues to what is really going on are hidden in it. Billy seems to be mesmerised and everything swirls around him, so he doesn't know what's going on, is he drugged, dreaming? But how could he know, because the viewers have gone back in time. The trouble is, understanding things is like grasping at mist, or projections, as soon as your fingers/mind touch anything the image dissolves and you're left with just a glimmer, then it's gone. I suspect I should watch this again. Very intriguing and confusing, quite wonderful really. This is probably the pivotal episode of this whole series.

I Love Patty So Much More

Knowing that she would make a phone call while sitting on the crapper.

She's a keeper.

Filler!!
Hitchcoc18 December 2020
In order to fill out eight episodes, we throw in prequel nonsense. I suppose we need to know how Billy got to this place and what happened to Bobbi. I couldn't wait for this episode to be done. That woman he is with is so tiresome and infests newer episodes. Graham Green delivers a pregnant line. More out of body experiences.

Ridiculous, pointless and confusing - if you care.

What?!

This episode makes absolutely no sense. Period. Yes, I read the description, it's flashbacks from things that happened before episodes 1 - 3 but that explains NOTHING. Whatever.

What?

This episode was making at least a little sense, until the chick from the previous season shows up. I have no idea what Billy drank, but it sure was not alcohol. And from there I was as confused as he was in the stupor brought on by god knows what. Nothing makes sense. I could not tell what was dream and what was real. Why was that seat reserved? Why was the money burned? I guess I need to watch the next episode to clear up my confusion?

Time and again

I'll never understand the current storytelling fashion of starting a story at a random point and then jumping back and forward without any information to the audience. Don't overestimate the audience, we may be dumber than you think and a little subtitle stating that some events took place a few weeks earlier never hurt anybody.

In that respect, this episode is annoying, even if seeing Bobbie alive is a clear giveaway of what is going on. Still... clarify, won't you?

Once you get the point that this took place in the "past", it is actually a good episode with less Twin Peeks vibes (a good thing for me).

However, I just don't get Billy's passive attitude and his giving in totally to the mighty annoying Janet Chinese-not-Chinese character (who's strangely credited as Applebees???)

One thing is being polite to a bothersome individual, another is being a total doormat and Billy falls in the second slot, without any doubt.
