"900 million Romulan citizens to relocate"
isabellacheng15 February 2020
Seriously, 900 million? For the home planet of Romulan Star Empire? At least DS9 had a sensible order of population for Cardassia: 800 million died in the final battle alone, infer total population however you like.

"There are over three billion stars in our galaxy alone." Again, my god, is off by a factor of 100. There are 100 - 400 billion stars in our galaxy. Did the Q civil war cause 99% of the stars to go supernova? At least try Googling it if you want to put easily verifiable facts into your script!

Let alone the Romulan Star Empire rivals the Federation on her own! Why couldn't they themselves conduct the evacuation? There are so much logical inconsistencies with the production that would drive a Vulcan into a Romulan!

Just so you know, "Science Fiction" has the word "Science" in it. I missed the good old days where the technobabbles are actual engineering/physics terminologies that motive young viewers to learn about the science behind, instead of "we can teleport anywhere in the universe using mushrooms because reasons" nowadays. #PicardFacepalm

boldly going in random directions
randomxjp14 February 2020
The existential pain of living with the consciousness that new Trek is not what you hoped it would be.

Four episodes in and the characters seem to be beaming in from other franchises. Possibly trying to create a dysfunctional Star Trek Firefly crossover feel...?

Do we really need to have a Romulan Jar Jar Binks sliding across the floor in his socks? Or an attack of the drunk hologram clones, with subtitles in the middle of the battle sequence?

Forced "clever" dialogue, not even technobabble, to explain obscure story elements, or provide psuedo character development. There's no warmth.

JL, really? not buying it. the "F" word, for no reason? moody emo teenager-esq captain? too many hollow-grams? even the ship design is lacking character. boldly going in random directions...

At least we have Patrick Stewart.

I'm Really Enjoying This
jgeorge414 February 2020
As a big fan of Patrick Stewart and Star Trek Next Gen, I had high hopes for this series. So far, I have not been disappointed.

There are a lot of negative reviews so far, and there are some fair criticisms to be had. Too much feels like generic sci-fi, and too much lacks the genuine "Star Trek" magic. Overall, however, this is great stuff.

I like Santiago Cabrera and his flock of holograms. I love the interplay on the Borg reclamation cube - terrific tension and suspense. Everything on the series looks very cool.

This "Romulan Ninja" character is a little blase, (the plot twist was as predictable as anything can be), but nothing's perfect. (Try benchmarking Picard against the first 4 episodes of Star Trek Next Gen!)

Bottom line, it is great to have Picard back on television, and I've quickly become a fan.

How can you screw up Picard in Space this badly
claire-719-89137114 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have watched TNG from start to end 3 times in my life. Deep space 9 twice. All the movies, Voyager etc etc.

I really opened up to this new show for the first couple of episodes and really gave it a pass for all the silliness in the understanding that its all just the usual Setup and character introduction required and then we are on our way... but when in the 3rd episode they were still dragging their feet on plot point introductions and setup I was getting worried.... now they have gone to space and it somehow got worse.

They have this terrible and nonsensical plot line to try and demonize Picard and separate him from star fleet. It is just so cringe to watch the Romulans all get mad at him for abandoning them... ok so probably better they were not on the massive fireball of a home planet he rescued them from or?... So stomping on Picards multi season and multi movie amazing reputation in the galaxy aside... We are still just making new plot points and adding more clutter into the story. This place, and that clan, and this pirate, and this tradition and that historical moment and .... What about what is happening now... you can barely comunicate to the audience what is going on at the time being let alone all this terrible Mars Attacks rubbish.

Yet another episode introducing characters that we will no doubt not bond with while our main character gets dumped on yet again. The borg cube parts are terrible at this point and only act as a distraction that the show could really do without. The borg plot could have been introduced and condensed half way through the series and allowed us to focus on Picard. Would have been a more impactfull reveal and maintained some Mystery instead of all of this pretend fake and unbelievable melodrama. Ice skating on a borg cube scene....the cringiest thing I have seen on TV in a long time.

Sorry Mr Frakes. I can imagine you did your best but the writing, set design and over all world building choices that have been made out of your hands are so poor it is hard to make this good. Go back to The Orville. Its more Star Trek than anything else on TV.

Loved it for what it was
Hillius14 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If there's one thing I've learned from watching shows with Santiago Cabrera is that there often quite funny, but also tend towards the zany side, and judging by next week's preview that seems like where this is definitely headed. It's a comedy more than the old TNG and I thought the interplay between Rios and his EMH last episode were utterly hilarious.

I'll admit that it's been awhile since I saw TNG or any of the TNG films, and so my cultural expertise on all things Romulan is a bit foggy. I thought the fighting nuns were a cool idea, although much that went on during the visit to the planet felt quite predictable. I'm not sure where they got that promise is a prison bit. A promise isn't binding it's just most people's way of saying that they intend to really try to do something. Not all of them end up working out or we wouldn't have so many people on antidepressants, but I digress.

I also agree along with some other reviewers that the martial arts warrior bit was overdone and unnecessary. It's the same thing I hated when it happened to the Star Wars prequels. They just can't seem to leave out the rather ridiculous (in this reviewers mind) over the top martial arts action ala the style of Crouching Tiger films. Star Trek was always about the phaser weapons, although swords and deadly daggers have been seen and used. RIP David Marcus.

What I did like was that we finally got a decent look at Rios ship and a bit of a space battle. That really felt like Star Trek, especially the classic design of the Romulan Bird of Prey. Sure the crew did pick up a few more pathetic life forms, but personally I can't wait to see what the heck Seven of Nine was doing lurking around Vashti. Jerry Ryan looks great and I'm happy she's back, although it makes me miss her relationship with Robert Picardo in Voyager.

Overall the show is giving me many laughs, and some pretty good feels. I seem to be missing the language everyone is talking about. I'll have to listen harder. What bores me to death are the romantic scenes between Soji and Narek. That guy looks like a Lycan more than anything. I want more secret derelict Borg cube, much less boring romance. I also though they seemed to hook up pretty quickly in the show.

Oh and if there are any KOA Reckoning fans out there- I nominate Petyon List to play Alyn Shir if ever they make a live action film.

Absolute Candor
Prismark1014 February 2020
With Jonathan Frakes in the director's chair. The opening flashback scenes certainly had a feel of The Next Generation television series.

Before the events in Mars. Picard had saved some Romulans and took them to the planet Vashti. He was feted as a hero and he even acted as a father figure to a small Romulan boy called Elnor.

Now he returns to the planet 14 years later with failure in his eyes. Picard needs the help of the order of nuns who are feted as fighters. They give him the adult Elnor but they all look on him as a man with empty promises who lets them all down.

Patrick Stewart had no desire to reprise Picard for more The Next Generation adventures. The slow burn storytelling is plain to see here. However it is to the detriment in pace. So many times it feels stilted.

The Borg scenes is evident of this. It just repeats events from previous episodes. Narek has a weird relationship with his sister. He is working on Soji to trust him despite his sister telling him to hurry up.

Introducing 2 new crew members!
tom99214 February 2020
Yes the show is moving slowly, but the writing is very good. You are pulled into the story, and you have time to process it. The shows visual effects are truly stunning. This episodes introduces another 2 crew members, one of them a familiar face! I don't get why people comment that this is a "filler episode", there is no such thing as a filler episode. What those people actually mean is that they want everything explained right away, if that would be the case there would only he 3 episodes. So I would say the these people: just sit back and enjoy the ride, eventually we'll get there!

Going downhill... slowly!
MegaMaexn14 February 2020
I am getting more and more frustrated with 'Picard'. Rated the 1st episode '9', the 2nd '8,', the 3rd '7 ' and this one '6'. It's very slow and the Romulan lore is almost as boring and annoying as the Klingon story in Discovery S1. Picard seems stilted and inhibited by his past, he is not the confident and driven starfleet officer he used to be, the one we came to love. His 'new crew' is a quite irritating and so far not very likeable, I hate Raffi calling him 'JL' all the time... However, I love the idea of exploring the Borg cube and Data's offspring having a predetermined destiny (?) hopefully the encounter at the end of this episode will turn the tide and make the show more exciting and interesting again...

Finally!
gubblebozer14 February 2020
This finally feels like Star Trek. After the terribly written technobabble of episode 2, and the definitely better episode 3, this could be hitting it's stride? Picard with some intense dialog. Consequences for his precious actions! Strange alien customs followed to consistent logical extremes. Space ships! Not cancelling CBS yet.

Reunion behind the camera on this episode of "Picard" as Jonathan Frakes directs this one, our first real off-Earth episode.

Sensing that his crew is a little light on fighting ability, Picard (Patrick Stewart) orders a detour to Vashti, a planet that was receiving Romulan refugee's prior to the abandoning of the rescue missions. Expecting the multicultural utopia he left, Picard is disappointed to find that Vashti has fallen to sectarianism, and violence. He does, though, meet Elnor (Evan Evagora), a young male Romulan that Picard brought to the planet and formed a connection with and who has learned the fighting skills of an ancient holy order.

I found this episode to be interesting, rather than actually good. It's nice to get off world and see some more of the galaxy. There are obvious parallels between the way Vashti has fallen to racism and current dynamics in our world. "White Saviour" was a way to go, but I'm not sure it was entirely prudent for Picard to risk his mission, to try and heal this one Romulan bar. The episode looks great again and I like the dynamic with Rios ship being populated by a holo-crew of various version of him. But the episode struggled logically, for me. I'm not sure whether the problem was that it wasn't particularly well thought through or whether it didn't explain it enough. I can follow that a criminal gang has a captured Bird Of Prey and is using it to dominate the planet - but what is this business about the shield, that only allows people to beam through it at certain intervals? It's seems arbitrary and only there to serve the plot of the episode. The planet looks relatively poor, who's maintaining this shield? What is it actually defending?

Elnor actually seems like he might be an interesting character, Evagora's Australian accent peaks through a little too often for my liking, but his naivety might generate some comedy across the rest of the run. Raffi is still calling Picard "JL" which remains horrible. All of which leads to the character reveal at the end of the episode, which might have been nice if it was a secret, but 7 of 9 features heavily in the advertising, which kinda killed it.

This is really a filler episode, designed to introduce the new character. It would be fine in a 22 episode season, but this is one of just ten. It's not awful but it's definitely lacking.

Stuff is definitely happening
metzelmax13 February 2020
Romulans are known for being honor bound sword duelists. Or were those Klingons? Who cares, certainly not the show runners.

We have a completely contrived reason for them to have a sword fight, so the Romulan Ninja can show off. And "Romulan Ninja" certainly is as much the writers put thought into it.

They also completely deflated the premise of the show, by showing that really there was no issue with the relocation if they could easily get them all to live on Vashti (a planet with fully functional defense system, so one guesses it can take in half of chinas population without any issues).

The writing is just a confusing mess that falls apart if you think about longer than a few seconds. Also Soji is the Destroyer because vague prophecies are really what I want out of a SciFi show.

Not getting better...
st_heinz17 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It s not getting better Unfortunately, Picard gets worse and weaker from episode to episode. Episode 4 barely brought the plot forward and had a series of stupid ideas and stupid dialogues. Would you like a selection: Romulan sword fighting? BorgShip ice rink without shoes? Seriously? What's the "Romulan only" sign? Who else should be there? A bird of prey from the Kirk-period? does it come from a museum? The captain holograms don't get funnier just because there are more ... The dialogues on board are stupid and unreliable anyway, "J.L." hurts in the ears every time. Raffi is extremely annoying. Weak episode. The appearance of 7 of 9 doesn't save anything anymore. but: I still don't give up hope.

Oh yes: how many Star Wars quotes do you want to add....?

Alex Kurtzman's "Absolute Cancer"
nodlimax14 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I saw the title of the episode "Absolute Candor" and after the previous episodes my mind immediately replaced the second word with something more fitting while still hoping that at the end I may want to change it back to what the original title is. Long story short => I didn't - it is "absolute cancer".

STP suffers exactly the same problems as STD. All of the characters are unlikable. And we had 4 episodes now that focus on introducing these characters. So what do we have?

1. A socially awkward female scientist - she's not awkward in a fun kind of way but in a REALLY annoying one. Whenever she's on screen I just want her to keep her mouth shut and disappear asap.

2. Han Solo Lite and his crew of identical copy-paste holograms which are all played by the same actor. He tries to be cool but actually isn't and the whole thing with the holograms just gets confusing because I have no idea what hologram I'm currently looking at and the writers don't seem to be interested to clear these things up. So usually I see someone talking to the actor that plays that Han Solo character and due to the hair cut and clothes you know it's not the captain but a hologram. Still you won't have any idea WHAT hologram that is until someone casually drops it in the middle or at the end of a conversation. in this episode it was at the end of a conversation and I've already forgotten what that hologram was supposed to be.

3. We got Rafi, who is supposed to represent a (fired) security officer. Her whole behavior is not very Star Fleet (which is probably why she was fired in the first place). She has a foul mouth but other than that there is nothing interesting about her.

4. In the current episode we are introduced to Elrond.....I mean Elnor. It's easy to confuse these two as they basically are the same in terms of visual design. In terms of personality there is not much to him. He's basically a kid and a sword fighting assassin. How a sword fighter is supposed to be effective versus phasors and disruptors is a mystery to me. And he's not very consistent in his behavior. "I'm not helping you as you are just here because you need me now!". A minute later: "I'm helping you because you need me". His inconsistency just proves how consistently poor the writing is.

5. Let's not forget JL himself (I HATE that "nickname"). The show managed to make me despise Picard. He's running around being a preacher while he himself literally abandoned everything and everyone around him. And yes, people make mistakes. After making mistakes you cannot run around acting like a morally superior person. Picard is exactly doing that which makes him look a huge narcissistic dirtbag. Maybe JL isn't such a bad name for him as this is NOT the Jean-Luc Picard we knew from TNG but more like Jake-Lucile Picard.

The rest of the story is not really moving forward with this episode. The dialogues are terrible and non sensical. The plank of wood that is running around on the borg cube is having forced romantic moments with that other plank of wood. The sister of the one plank of wood is still behaving like a psychopath while going for incest...

The ship is ugly and we don't know anything about it except that it has shields, holograms and is controlled apparently by body movement of Han Solo. Oh and we have Jar Jar Trek lens flares *groans* - what a joy....NOT.

Something from the end of the episode: The ugly ship of our main cast is attacked by an older random Romulan Bird of Prey. There is no attempt to communicate from either side(!!!). Also apparently our ugly ship (no idea what the name is) is poorly equipped in terms of weaponry but rather quick (where have I seen that before? *yawn*). Halfway through the fight Han Solo suddenly remembers that he actually has weapons and a tactical officer (?) hologram. Btw. Picard is just standing around in the background not doing anything. His tactical expertise from the Enterprise days wouldn't really help him here anyway, right? *cough*

They are unable to shake the Bird of Prey until they get help from another ship that warped in. Together they somehow damage the BoP heavily by cutting of a wing. Btw. there was no talk about what they are targetting or why. No tactical discussions on disabling the ship or something similar. Stuff just happens and suddenly the BoP is kaputt...

The assisting ship is heavily damaged too which our crew notices. Instead of them offering their assistance the other ship has to ask them for help and to be beamed over. And I'm not kidding - they actually have a discussion on whether helping the pilot of that second ship is a good idea or not. What the actual.....? How is that even a discussion that happened?

It should've been: "The other ship is heavily damaged and will smash into the planetary shield any moment." and Picards response should've been: "Beam the pilot to our ship immediately!". THIS would be the proper reaction. What has actually happened here just shows how far away from Star Trek we are.

Anyway after they beam over the pilot we see that it is Seven of Nine - Jeri Ryan. I'll take a look at the next episode to see how they make her character unlikable and then I will be done with this show.

Regarding Star Trek Picard the only thoughts I have are: What a waste of money...

Turn down the background music
Maddy-the-Weinerdog15 February 2020
Is anything ever going to happen in this series?

Did they think to have a self contained story in every episode? Or are they planning on having some grand story that we don't find out about until episode 10...or ever.

Yawn. I almost fell asleep.

Good directing on this episode, but the music competing with the actors has to stop. If the writers can't come up with a good enough story, don't try to hide it behind grandiose music...like we're experiencing something great. If they played lullabies it would be more appropriate.

Snore.

Solid action as Picard returns to space
Tweekums14 February 2020
Picard has finally got into space and is on his way to Freecloud but before they get there he decides to detour to the planet Vashti. This is where many of the Romulan refugees were taken and where fourteen years previously he had made promises he was unable to keep. Now he is seeking the assistance of a member of a group known for their fighting prowess and total honesty. Here he meets Elnor, a man he first knew when he was a child. In the time since he has learnt the fighting skills but can't enter the order as it is only for women. Meanwhile on the former Borg cube Narek is trying to learn more about Soji by planting a seed of doubt about her past... his sister believes his feeling for Soji are clouding his judgement.

After three Earthbound episodes it was great to see Picard back in space again; even if it is made clear that he is not the captain of the ship; merely the captain's employer. I rather liked how this changed the expected dynamic. In many ways the scenes on Vashti were pure 'Star Trek: TNG' as he talks to Elnor; apologising for his failure to continue the evacuation then gets in a confrontation when he enters a Romulan only establishment... this leads to a scene which definitely wouldn't have appeared in TNG; a surprisingly graphic end to a confrontation! This scene provided some solid action as did a fight between Picard's ship and an old Bird of Prey. This latter scene led to a nice surprise as an ally is beamed aboard. The scenes on the cube were less dramatic but still rather interesting. As one would expect the special effects were impressive and the cast did a fine job. I know some viewers find the pace of the main plot development a little slow but I like that; not everything has to be wrapped up in a few episodes. Overall a solid episode that I really enjoyed.

Better Than Episode Three
Hitchcoc21 March 2020
That said, it is still lacking the feel that Star Trek should have. Whey did the kid have to become a Ninja with the classic outfit that one gets at a martial arts studio? There are so many random things going on. By the way, does the little blonde scientist remind any of you of Peter McNichol? At times Picard seems quite silly and out of place. Did that kid actually say "Bite me." How sad. Others have addressed the profanity. But by Episode 5 will they actually get going. Oh, they should do much better. They have 7 of 9 and a sword fighter.

This is great trek!
anthonymotture14 February 2020
I feel I have to rate this every week due to the negativity it's getting. I love it! This is what I dreamed trek would evolve in to. I really love the ships Emergency hologram, made me chuckle. I don't see how anyone could deny this is the best cinematography, writing and acting of any of the franchises. Anyone who believes otherwise are looking at the old series with rose tinted glasses. I've been a life long Trekkie, but never a major Kirk fan. Shatter wasn't the best actor was he? DS9, TNG then voyager. Enterprise was ok but ended poorly. If you want to acuse me of being a bot the I'll show you what squares the traffic lights are in. 'There are four lights! '

Mixed feelings.
giongalini19 February 2020
You know, there is a reason why the first episode of Star Trek Picard is rated higher than the following three. And the reason for that is that stuff actually happened in the first episode and I thought "We're off for a great dynamic start, I hope the entire series is just like this first episode!"

It's not. My hopes were in vain... Picard spent the entire second episode just talking to a bunch of people. I get it that the show is introducing it's characters, but... the characters should be introduced while the plot is actually unfolding and stuff is happening. Otherwise it's just boring and frustrating to watch.

Going back to episode 4 - Absolute Candor - I both liked and disliked it.

I liked the introduction of Elnor, he seems like a great and interesting character.

I didn't like Picard much in this episode. Frankly, I don't understand the guy. Why didn't he just left Vashti after Elnor refused to go with him? He had seven minutes left on Vashti and he thought it prudent to spend this time provoking Romuland by acting all noble and all that. And that after he didn't go through with his promises the first time. Couldnt he just left the Romulans alone to sort their stuff out themselves since he is not going to stick around anyway. And then he rebuked Elnor for killing that Romulan guy. Maybe I didn't understand fully Picard's motives but he seemed to me to be a pompous sanctimonious ass.

Also didn't like the plot line of Narek and Soji in this episode. Simply becasue it's stomping in one place an not evolving. We already know that Soji is an android and is unaware of that. We already know that she is a supposed Destroyer from Romulan epic tales or whaterer. We already know that Romuland are after her. We already know that Narssia is evil and creepy. It was frustrating to watch, honestly.

That said I think STP is a great production and the actors are fantastic. Whoever is responsible for casting in this show is doing a great job.

Although I do find Picard and Raffi to be somewhat annoying.

garabedian12314 February 2020
So apparently the show wants us to believe that Picard had all these commitments and people, and empires that he just suddenly abandons when star fleet fires him. And the season is about reconnecting with these commitments? Im guessing. I have totally forgotten why this android girl is supposed to be special or important. Her love life is boring af...And I really dont care to see anything about her or the boring borg ship

Impressive episode
ciuca1985-192-69644514 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the 1st episode. I didn't like the 2nd one, except for some scenes. I find the 3rd one the best so far. And not just the best, but with a strong story and very good performances from all the actors! Good job Jonathan Frakes!

The story of the romulans from Vashti is believable and also the importance of Picard in their community. Elnor fits well as a symbolic child of Picard. However, there were some minuses as well in regards to these romulans: why do they fight with both swords and disruptors? Also, it seems their attitude and look is borrowed from the Lord of the Rings of Tolkien! That is not, in itself, a bad thing. There was also a scene, on the ship, where Picard put his hat on his head in the same manner Gandalf did it! That was nice.

Back on the ship, the Spanish captain played very well! I felt some strange mix of feelings because there is a huge difference between the atmosphere on this ship and that on the Enterprise. There are no rules here, and the captain is an outcast. But, that let aside, the interaction between the characters was very well done. Well, except for doctor Jurati who still seems not integrated in the team. I see no added value from her side, except for her comic attitude, which, sometimes I did not find too amusing. But, there was a very funny character in this episode: the EMH. As on Voyager, this EMG has also the sense of humor.

The confrontation between the former romulan senator and Picard was quite strong, and see Picard fighting with a sword again gave me chills. The beginning of the confrontation seemed a little false: I felt somt artificial playing from Picard, something in his gestures when sitting at the table seemed off...But the senator played very well his part.

The borg cube story was left in a 2nd plan, less important. However, it did advanced: we found out what the romulans from that cube are are searching for and what do they intend to do with Soji. There is still a mystery about why Soji is a treat to them...And, I still find difficult to believe that the romulans faught and won the battle against the Borg! The romulan spy brother played very well. They showed a gothic scene at the end, a bit strange as a relationship between brothers. This scene, I also see it as a minus: the 2 spies do not act as romulans do. I am both annoyed and enchanted by their acting. Also, why there are different representations of the romulans: some have altered heads, others don't? The romantic scene between Soji and the romulan teenager was quite a good one.

And 7 of 9? Well, that was nostalgia again and a good come back for this ex-borg female!

The music was intelligently edited in this episode and contributed to the drama.

The space fight scene looked fine. The romulan ship seemed canonical. However, as in Discovery (whih is an abomination in Star Trek's history), the ships are a little to small. I mean, the camera seems to be placed too far away. I remember that in TOS, in TNG, in DS(, in Voyager, hell! in all the old school Trek, there are nicer ways to capture the ships and the battles. Back then, the ships felt also more "real". Somehow, I will accomodate to this new Trek if all goes as good as this episode...

Absolute Candor

Warning: Spoilers
There were moments of this to like, including that surprise moment at the end, but overall this was another episode that just left me wondering why we need this show and what their overall plan is.

I really don't understand modern TV

It seems like every new show is trying to be game of thrones. Lots of dialog with nothing happening. I'm not saying that I need action or anything. I prefer shows that set up some sort of problem that gets solved by the end of the episode. I know that seems cliche and all, but i find it more interesting. I think the Mandalorian did a great job with that. Most episodes had a beginning, middle and end all while moving the entire story along. Even the Orville is better than this. Star Trek Picard did a great job setting up the show with the first episode. Now it is just torture.
