This pilot to my surprise made it to a full series.
Gary King is a working class lad done good, living in a swanky suburb wanting to keep up with his neighbours. What Gary reallys wants is the approval of his dad, especially now dad has handed down to the son the annual barbecue.
However there is a fly in the ointment. One of the new neighbour's plans to have a rival barbecue on the same day.
To Gary this is not on. His dad always had the first barbecue of the season. Gary goes off and buys all the meat, tells the butcher not to supply the neighbour. (I would have thought other butchers were available.) Gary pulls out all the stops to have the biggest and flashiest barbecue in the neighbourhood. His dad is still left unimpressed.
Davis intends to show Gary and his wife Terri to be a loving family who are just a bit dim and desperately wants social approval.
I thought this was weak stuff. It was old hat and I had more sympathy with the neighbour who got the last gag on Gary by sticking the knife in.
