Mixed bag, but feel the need to speak out on the 1* reviews
daniellecbrown731 May 2019
This is my first review ( because we all have a first!). I understand some of the references to box checking the diversity components of the program.

However, whilst this might not be the first show where a white cop shoots an innocent black man, I find it astonishing that there are so many references to liberalism, and leftist being at the forefront.

It's more aligned with recognizing and being truthful about the fact that cops shoot black people indiscriminately, far too often.

Racial profiling is not going away and there are too many bad cops ruining the reputation of the vast majority of great ones who do a difficult job.

In my opinion, we need to keep making programs that call out this reality.... whatever your politics.

This just didn't meet the mark
nancyldraper21 May 2019
This just didn't meet the mark. The performances were uneven. The editing was sloppy. The premise was interesting but it could have been executed in 4 episodes with better writers, some better casting choices (Jira is the linchpin of this story and the young actress, or the direction she was given, didn't live up to the challenge). I give this series a 5 (meh) out of 10. {Political/Crime Drama}

Better Than Exoected
conway300013 May 2019
This mini series show caught my interest because I live in Chicago and the setting of the show is Chicago. This show was much better than expected. They set up the show as north side vs south side. There are great neighborhoods on both north and south side. Noah Wyle did a great job as the husband of the murdered by a cop doctor. The story gives all of the ramifications to all factions involved in this story: doctor'd family, politicians and the police department. I am glad I stuck with this mini series as the story evolved it became more enjoyable.

pushing hot buttons
SnoopyStyle21 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
High school teacher Daniel Calder (Noah Wyle), his respected surgeon husband Harrison Brennan, and their adopted daughter Jira live a comfortable life in Chicago. Harrison is mistakenly killed by police officer Paul Evans (Noel Fisher) during a convenient store holdup. Paul comes from a police family. He's troubled by the incident and his partner has stolen the surveillance tape proving his fault. Jira contacts her biological mother, Tia Young, who is running for local office against corrupt incumbent Nathan Gordon. The Red Line also refers to a train line that cuts through different neighborhoods in Chicago.

The show is pushing some hot buttons. It's pushing the audience's buttons. The politics may be off-putting for some. Daniel is off-putting for me. He's got the annoying self-righteous neediness. He's more of a problem than any of the politics. As it stands, the plot is compelling enough. Noel Fisher is able to thread the needle without making his character villainous. His daddy issue is the needed origin story. Jira's need for a black culture connection is compelling. There are good aspects and I want to see the characters' journey. There are still plenty of problems. Even the last episode has Tia bribing somebody in Gordon's camp. I wouldn't mind it but Tia needs to be conflicted about the bribe. Instead, she seems oblivious to her own corrupted politics in the situation. There are a few awkward bothersome turns. Overall, it is intriguing enough to hold one's attention.

Too many cliches
Narce30 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
White cop shoots unarmed black man in the back, without warning? Check. Black man who is shot is part of a bi-racial couple? Check. Bi-racial couple are gay men? Check. "Daughter" of the gay men is adopted? Check. (in truth maybe not a cliche, as it is unlikely one of the gay men is the father)

There are just too many predictable tropes for this show to hold my interest in this age of "peak TV"

THIS IS A POSITIVE REVIEW (what's with all the hate).
adam-2122310 May 2019
Came in with no expectations other than Noah Wylie can be quite good on his day. Certainly not a 10 but definitely not a 1 as some of the other people have scored it. It's good TV. Yes it's got some issues but then don't they all? Acting is great, story line interesting and the emotion count high.

I watch a lot of different shows and its far superior to many of them some of which are in to 5 or 6 seasons already. Honestly I cannot fathom why it's been slated so far unless it's been unfairly picked upon. Look check out the first two episodes and make your own choice. I mean what do you have to lose.... Its solid.

For those questioning reviews from people saying they've binged watched all 8 episodes even though at the time of writing this only 4 have aired: the entire season was leaked online on the 10th April.

Fails to rise above it's pretensions
ikanboy23 May 2019
The problem I had with this show is that it approached a serious topic as if it was a soap opera. Fraught with the appropriate emotions but lacking in depth. It will do well with those already in the choir but it should have attempted to reach a wider audience. Serious themes: White Cop on unarmed Black killings; corruption at City Hall; Children given up at birth; Gay relationships; Police stress; Police tribalism, are all touched on but too superficially. It looks like a pilot for a series. A series I won't be watching.

Dreadful Script/Worse Acting & False Reviews
Ladybbird-269-94514629 April 2019
I was looking forward to this series in the hope it would tell 1 story about the terrible injustice on black people from police in the US. It did NOT. Instead it was about 2 married gay men who have a daughter called Jira and 1 of the men was shot by police. It could have been good but was ruined by the terrible script and bad acting. The only decent actors were Noel Fisher who played the guilty cop & Aliyah Royale who played Jira, but she looked way too old to play the part of a teenage girl. I have watched EP1 but struggled to watch all of it. EP2 has also aired. So how come there is a list of so many false reviews from people who say they binged watched all EPs of season 1 and it was the best TV show ever ETC > PLEASE

Ten minutes in...
jiballini641 November 2019
...and I'm done. The set-up is SO bad! What kind of training do the police in that city get? Shoot without a warning of any sort, apparently. I'm not a trained police officer, but I find this a wee bit unlikely. After that ridiculous opening, who gives a s*^t about the rest of it?!? Not me!

Broadcast network spins another Liberal Propaganda Cliche...
Justin-354-2183793 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
He first 5 minutes of the Pilot leave no question that this series is going to be another work of Liberal Propaganda. Spoiler: The framework of the series story line is centered around an interracial Gay couple that are the adoptive Dads to a child of color, living in a happy Left wing Utopia until the harmony of their 'Colors of the Rainbow" world is shattered by the evil White Cop who mistakenly guns down the Gay dad of color while responding to a robbery in progress call... It plays out of the screen worse than it reads. This is some hollywood writer's progressive wet dream. It is a really bad mashup of every imaginable Social Justice issue trying to be "woke" but it ends up looking like a total cliche. TV is supposed to be entertainment not a platform for indoctrination. This show is a dumpster fire and I won't watch another episode.

Outstanding Drama
vhawk-3439520 May 2019
As a native Chicagoan, I found the writing to be well researched and realistic. In addition, as a member of a Police Officer's family, it was refreshing to see that both the positive and negative aspects of the Police Dept. were depicted. The cast was phenomenal and I felt like they were passionate about their roles. Sadly, the political corruption really exists and leaves a blemish on the city. Hopefully, this program may encourage more unity among all races and less stereotyping. Job well done!

I was with it, until they made it a conspiracy
steviejo467 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Love Noah Wyle, Corey Reynolds, and Noel Fisher and really liked the premise of the show. But they lost me with the conspiracy and cover up concerning the " tape". I thought the show was going to treat the shooting as what it was - a tragic error in judgement and the way these two families moved forward. As the show exists now, the cops are, of course, the "bad guys". Bad form show writers, bad form.

Got my attention from the start
jfsbndr-1079129 April 2019
I thought I'd watch the show while doing some other work. Never got to that other work. The way the story unfolds from various perspectives really drew me in from episode one. I've found a great new show for Sunday nights.

Jussie Smollet should be the lead actor. Divisive, politically pandering and disgusting. All the best attributes of Hollywood.

Complex family drama - ignore the "hater" reviews
kortiz-307-2650446 May 2019
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this well-acted family drama because it can lead to important discussions about gay & heterosexual marriages; closed vs. open adoption; the ruthlessness of political campaigns; and one incident of a police shooting of an unarmed citizen; racism; family loyalty; and the devastation of grief that comes from losing a spouse, a parent, and a friend.

I think some of the comments here might be a reflection of personal ideologies and politics and do not accurately reflect this show as entertainment. This is not an "anti-cop" story, and it is not a simple binary of good vs. evil. It is so much more than that because the character's lives, secrets, and motivations are as complex as we are.

There are so many shows on these days that are not worth wasting my time on, and this one is worth watching.

Nothing compelling here. Editing is horrible. Can give you a headache. More camera cuts than necessary. Contemporary music in the background telling you what to feel rather than the acting. Dialogue needs work.

Best show I've seen in a while!
jenlone3929 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
All of the people downvoting positive reviews for this show must have policemen in their family. Guess what? I do as well and I loved this! Not every cop is a good cop so please do away with your misguided views. This man was shot because he is black. Plain and simple. He didn't have a weapon, he wasn't running away, he wasn't fighting with the cop. The cop saw a black man and shot, not once, but twice. Did he yell Police? Or Stop? Or Step away from the register? No, just came in and pulled the trigger twice. Noah Wylie is brilliant in this. I've always loved him. He isn't afraid to show his emotions and his crying seemed very real. The actress playing his daughter is excellent, too. This is an honest look at how these police shootings affect more than just the cop. There are more than one victim left dead. The family's hearts are shattered as well.

As of Now, it's Still a Free Country
Scratsmyhero6 May 2019
Ok, I've seen two episodes of The Red Line, and it's not bad. Not the best TV I've ever seen, but shows promise. I have read a lot of IMDB reviews to help me choose movies and tv programs to watch, and sometimes the reviews get piled on, usually by those who are more interested in Candy Crush or mommy than real thought.

This time it's obvious that some highly placed official with a strong Tweet finger, or one of his minions, is at work. Key phrases and words like Fake News, Hollywood, Liberal, saying things about other reviews that really don't exist, and inability to show intelligence in comments and spelling lead down that path. Honestly, 1's out the Wazoo? Who's fooling whom?

Red Line, from what I have seen, graphically shows the stress and ambiguity and need for growth on all sides of the fence. Maybe if we had more shows like this that might encourage intelligent discussion, we'd all be better off.

Apologies NOT accepted!
tobrien-150-66629214 May 2019
The first episode was a grabber, good story line, passable characters. However, the next two episodes got me laughing at the constant barrage of apologies. I don't think there was a conversation that didn't contain some sort of apology. They should have titled the show "The I'm sorry Line". Well...I'm sorry, but I'm done watching...sorry.
