The previous reviewer said it perfectly.
Jack Dalton, with his canon background of being in the army, a sniper, Delta Operator (which is no easy feat to not only get selected for, but pass the grueling tests), and CIA, makes him very smart and capable in his own right. Not to mention the other special trainings that have been mentioned he has completed and his ability to easily read people and situations.
This all could have been a compliment to Mac's intelligence, improvisation, and book smarts. But instead the writers/showrunners more often than not chose to write and portray him as an idiot, inept, and comic relief. Yes, Jack had a sense of humor, his coping mechanism against the horrors of his job, but that is so far removed from being a joke and comic relief.
Jack added humor, warmth, heart, experience, and most important guidance, and George did an incredible job portraying emotions. Because now, the entire team is twenty-somethings with barely any experience; worldly or as secret agents.
Its definitely a very different show now.
As for the episode... It would have been nice to have a Jack centric episode considering it was his last one. You can't tell me the writers didn't have enough warning, PL has said in interviews that he didn't even think George was coming back.
But I did love the Jack and Bozer time, Jack up until the last moments giving the younger agent advice. Lucas did a great job of Mac's emotions; being strong and supportive while at the same time concerned of the danger his best friend/brother will be in and upset by him going away and trying to hide that all from Jack.
And Jack and Riley's goodbye? Yeah, that's when I lost it. Totally made me cry.
