She tells Pat to stay away from her, and Pat says that he can explain once he gets her somewhere safe. He has S.T.R.I.P.E. kneels and holds out one giant hand, and Courtney glances back at the tire factory where Brainwave attacked her. Courtney then climbs onto the robot's back, and S.T.R.I.P.E. flies off.
Brainwave comes out of the factory and looks at Courtney's student ID that she dropped.
S.T.R.I.P.E. flies back to Blue Valley and lands behind Pat's garage. It goes inside and Pat emerges from the chest cockpit while Courtney climbs off the back. The Staff tries to pull Courtney away and she tells it to stop and she just needs a minute. She leans it against a workbench and Pat comes over and asks his stepdaughter if she's okay. Furious, she asks what S.T.R.I.P.E. is and Pat tells that it's a prototype that he built out of old car pars after Sylvester died.
Pat has Courtney describe Brainwave and recognizes him. She figures that Brainwave fought her father, and Pat tells her again that Sylvester wasn't her father. Pat says that her attacked was Brainwave and he was one of the JSA's enemies, and a member of the Injustice Society. Courtney demands to know who Brainwave is, and Pat says that he's trying to protect her. He says that the IJ's leader, Icicle, killed Starman and he doesn't know where Icicle is now. Courtney figures that Brainwave knows where Icicle is, and figures it's no coincidence that Brainwave is in Blue Valley just like Pat is. He finds Brainwave waiting for him, and the costumed Brainwave tells him that they have a problem. Brainwave shows William Courtney's ID and says that she has Starman's Staff, and they need to alert the others and tell them to be prepared. William says that first they need to know exactly what is going on, and Brainwave tells him that he already called Jordan Mahkent. When William points out that Jordan left him in charge, Brainwave probes his mind. William threatens Brainwave with his wand and tells him to stay out of his head, and tells him that the work they're doing in Blue Valley is the perfect test case for Jordan's grand plan, Project New America, and it's too important to them and their families to abandon. William agrees and Brainwave says that he's going to find Courtney, determine what she knows, and kill her.

Hourman and his wife died in a car accident shortly after tracking the villains there, and when Pat came there following Hourman's research he met Barbara. Pat was the only one left so Hourman gave his research to Pat, and when Pat got to Blue Valley he couldn't find the IS. He didn't think any of them had stayed there, and he built S.T.R.I.P.E. to help Hourman if he needed help, but he never did. Courtney suggests that they go find Brainwave, and Pat says that the villain might not be alone and if he tracks Courtney there, the entire Dugan family could be in danger.
Pat says that he wore a costume to protect his identity, and Courtney figures that she needs a costume. Pat says that he's doing it without Courtney, and Courtney figures the Staff lit up because it knows the IS is there. Pat tells her that she's not going to touch the Staff again, but she refuses to sit on the sidelines like Pat did.
Later, Pat can't sleep and goes to the basement. He looks at an old JSA Classified file with information on Brainwave, and hears someone coming down the stairs. Pat grabs a hammer and goes to investigate, and finds the family dog, Buddy.
The next day, Pat takes S.T.R.I.P.E. out into a field and practices with the robot. It doesn't go well.

Her daughter claims that she fell down the basement stairs. When Barbara notices similar bruises on Pat's face from his practicing with S.T.R.I.P.E., he also says that he tripped down the basement stairs. Pat tries to explain, and Courtney interrupts him to comment on the pancakes he made for breakfast. Both Barbara and Mike notice that Courtney and Pat are acting weird, but they deny it. Bridget tells Beth that she and James have to get back to work, and they'll see Beth at the school open house that night. Henry Sr. hears Bridget talking about the open house and asks Bridget about it after she signs off, and says that he and his son wouldn't miss it.
Courtney looks over at Yolanda, who tells Courtney to stop staring at her. The girl walks away, and Courtney sees a banner for the open house.

Bambara and the other employees stand up, and the guests applaud them.
Afterward, Henry Jr. asks his father why they're there when Henry Sr. never comes to the open houses. Henry Sr. tells his son to go get some punch, and tries to find Courtney in the crowd. Meanwhile, Crusher stops Pat from eating cookie, telling him that they're not on the exercise program that he started.

Courtney finds Pat and tells him that Brainwave is there, and he knows that Barbara is her mother. Pat finds Barbara and tells her that they have to go, claiming that he's not feeling well.
Later at the Dugan house, Courtney goes to the basement to get the Staff. Pat finds her and asks what she's doing, and Courtney says that she has to face Brainwave. Pat figures that Brainwave will kill Courtney as well, and she says that the Staff is giving her a chance to get justice for her father's death. Pat tells her that she's staying in the house and if he's not back in the morning, Courtney should leave Blue Valley with Barbara and Mike. Courtney puts on the costume she made and jumps off the roof, landing on the Staff as it comes to her. She "surfs" it to the high school.
Brainwave advances on S.T.R.I.P.E. and demands the Staff. Courtney blasts him with it and slams Brainwave into a car. She says that she's Stargirl and S.T.R.I.P.E. is her sidekick. Brainwave throws two concrete parking bumps at Stargirl, and she dodges them and kicks Brainwave back. He knocks her back and throws more debris at her, and she knocks each piece away.
The last piece hits her and knocks her back, and knocks the Staff out of her hand. It powers down just out of Stargirl's reach, and Brainwave tells Stargirl that he's disappointed that he's not facing Starman. Brainwave grabs her head and mentally feeds her pain, and Pat manages to turn a spotlight on, on S.T.R.I.P.E., and blinds Brainwave. Stargirl manages to grab the Staff and jams the tip into Brainwave's face as it powers up. A wave of mental energy sweeps out and then implodes on Brainwave, and he collapses to the ground, unconscious.
Stargirl and S.T.R.I.P.E. both free themselves, and they drop Brainwave off at the hospital. Bridget calls Henry Jr. in and tells him that they found his father outside, and he apparently suffered a seizure of some sort. Henry Sr. is in a coma, and Bridget admits that Henry Sr. is the best doctor who could have helped him.
At Pat's garage, Pat assures Courtney that it's not her fault if Brainwave died and his mind short-circuited. Courtney wonders if the Staff is alive, and Pat tells her that Starman didn't know and a man named Ted Knight built it for him. Courtney figures that they'll down the other member of the IS just like they took down Brainwave, and avenge the JSA. Pat tells his step-daughter that he can't do it and concedes that she might be Sylvester's daughter, and points out that she saved him and stopped Brainwave. He points out that the last time he was a sidekick, his partner got killed. Courtney insists that he can do it and the Staff chose her, and she's choosing Pat, and asks which bad guy is next.
