As much as I enjoyed Bloodshot Heart, I am not going to pretend I understood it at all.

The actors, Richard James Allen, Dina Panozzo and Emily David were great as were the rest of the cast, but there were times I found it hard to follow. Maybe it was just me. There was a real hallucinatory feel to the film that was excellent but I was never quite clear what was going on.

This is a good movie with some great scenes and the ending was not what I expected. I think there were some parts that could have been made a little clearer, but again, it might have just been me.

The movie's musical score was great and there were some scenes that really gripped me. All, up, this is a good movie, but it just seems to get a little confused at times.

Bloodshot Heart was a surprise viewing for me. With an unknown cast and an intriguing trailer, I really didn't know what to expect - just what I like! No hype, no spoilers. I have not been as pleasantly puzzled since Donnie Darko. And just like Darko, Bloodshot Heart will be "a genuinely oddball cult item" to quote Google. If you can, see this film in a theatre, the score (by Ola Turkiewicz) is incredible. The picture has a classic retro feel, beautifully captured by Susan Lumsdon, with cool practical in-camera effects. But it is the intense performance as Hans by Richard James Allen and the broody Matilda by Emily David that are worth the ticket alone. Both layer their roles with subtext and bottled emotion, until it all explodes in the last act. Written and directed by Parish Malfitano this is an impressive debut feature that pays homage to cinema of the 70's, with a few modern twists of it's own. Bloodshot Heart is a fevered dream, a memory of love, loss and bloody hope.
