Jay Harrington: Sergeant David 'Deacon' Kay

Quotes

  • Dominique Luca : Sarzo says he'll be done laying the floors by noon, and renovations will officially be done. I'm thinking about getting some pies from DeSano's, break open the home brew. What do you say we all christen the new pad tonight?

Victor Tan : Uh, I wish I could, but I got CrossFit.

Jim Street : [teasing]  Oh, still working off the extra holiday pounds, fat boy?

    Victor Tan : Please.

    Dominique Luca : Chris?

Christina 'Chris' Alonso : Date night with Ty and Kira. Sorry.

Jim Street : Hey, how's it going with them?

Christina 'Chris' Alonso : Good, so far.

Jim Street : That's all you're gonna give us? "Good so far"?

Christina 'Chris' Alonso : I don't want to jinx anything.

Dominique Luca : Hey, Deac, you in?

David 'Deacon' Kay : What, are you kidding me? Between work and moonlighting, I haven't seen Annie and the kids in two days, and I got another security gig tonight.

Dominique Luca : So nobody's in?

  • Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Still waiting for confirmation, but initial reports sound like it was a workplace shooting. Security managed to put the building on lockdown, evacuate most of its employees. But not before the suspect holed up in reception with six hostages.

David 'Deacon' Kay : Just got a report from the officer on scene. It wasn't a workplace shooting; it was an abduction. Two masked suspects, one got away with a woman.

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : A kidnapping?

Victor Tan : Hey, at least three other abductions in the last half hour by masked assailants. North Hollywood, Pico-Robertson, and Inglewood.

Christina 'Chris' Alonso : Four simultaneous kidnappings in completely different parts of town?

Jim Street : No way that's a coincidence.

  • David 'Deacon' Kay : Got this from the captain. It was just released online.

Cinque : [with voice distortion]  We warned you to be good, or we'd be back. Well, this morning, we took five employees from five of the largest corporations in Los Angeles: DeWitt Investments, McCahey Construction, Kinari Imports, Caldow Pharmaceutical, Wayland Financial. For too long, these companies have avoided paying their fair share, hiding billions overseas and evading taxes, while ordinary citizens struggle to make ends meet and our communities starve. Well, no longer. To these five companies, we've calculated your fair tax burden to be $523 million. You'll each receive an individual bill. Your options are as follows. Send us the money. Your employees will be set free, and the funds will be distributed to charities around the country. Or don't, and your employees will pay for your sins with their lives. Your tax bill is due... today, courtesy of the Emancipators. You each have twelve hours to show the world how you actually care about your workers. Starting... now.

  • Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Any update?

Robert Hicks : The companies have confirmed the employees that were taken hostage.

Jessica Cortez : All hourly workers; janitor, IT, retail.

Dominique Luca : So, what, they kidnap Jane Lunch Lady and force companies to choose between profits and blue-collar victims?

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Yeah, it looks like it.

David 'Deacon' Kay : What better way to highlight class inequality?

  • Robert Hicks : RHD is spread thin; other departments are stepping in. Patrol is rounding up hostages' families, bringing some to SWAT for protection. Ask them if they've seen anything or anyone suspicious in the past few weeks.

Jessica Cortez : Meanwhile, Digital Forensics is studying the video for any clues to their hideout.

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : No, it didn't work last time.

David 'Deacon' Kay : What about the companies? Have you heard from them?

Robert Hicks : Mayor Barrett's meeting with the five CEOs at Caldow Pharmaceutical corporate headquarters. I've heading over now to advise. Cortez has command.

  • Victor Tan : RHD got a hit on our dead guy, Bayo. Our prints show his real name is Ronald Campbell. Dr. Ronald Campbell. 29. Post-doc out of UC Santa Cruz. Wrote a thesis titled "Efficacy of Radical Protest Groups". Quit his teaching gig at Northridge a year back. RHD's searching for a last known address.

Jessica Cortez : Be ready to roll as soon as we get it.

David 'Deacon' Kay : These guys got away from us last time.

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Not this time.

  • Bridget : This is the same group on the news from a few months ago? The one that bombed the cop car in Hollywood? That's who kidnapped my mom?

David 'Deacon' Kay : Bridget, did your mom mention anything odd happening in the last week or two? Anyone following her? Or a strange encounter?

Bridget : No. Nothing. She's just a receptionist. She makes... little charms in her spare time. She barely makes any money. What do they want with her?

David 'Deacon' Kay : We're trying to figure that out.

[seeing her absent-mindedly fingering her bracelet]

David 'Deacon' Kay : Is that one of your mother's charms?

Bridget : Last week, I blew her off to hang out with a girlfriend. Now, I'd give anything just to see her again, just to tell her I love her.

David 'Deacon' Kay : Hey, I'm sure she knows that. I know you're worried about her, but we have cops all over the city looking for her. So if I hear anything, I'll let you know.

  • Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Kidnappings and ski masks. That remind you of anything?

Dominique Luca : That group that got away from us three months ago.

David 'Deacon' Kay : [on comms]  Hondo. Better come see this.

  • Dominique Luca : Hey, RHD found an address on our suspect. We got a search warrant. We're rolling.

David 'Deacon' Kay : See? That's good news. That's one of the people involved in taking your mom, so you hang tight.

Bridget : Promise me that you'll bring her back, please.

David 'Deacon' Kay : We'll do everything we can.

  • David 'Deacon' Kay : Looks like we might be going all night.

Annie Kay : Yeah, I've been watching the news nonstop. It's crazy. How is it on your end?

David 'Deacon' Kay : Yeah, it's pretty hectic. Might have to call Dee and back out of that security gig tonight.

Annie Kay : City comes first.

  • Annie Kay : Hey, um, I've been thinking. After the baby's born, maybe I should look for some work. You know, two incomes is better than one.

David 'Deacon' Kay : Annie, no. We'll have a newborn, and-and what about the other kids? Half of what you'd earn would end up going to child care.

Annie Kay : Even so, I...

David 'Deacon' Kay : Annie, trust me. I can provide for this family.

    Annie Kay : I know.

David 'Deacon' Kay : All right, I gotta go. I love you.

Annie Kay : I love you, too. Hey, be safe.

  • Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : All right, I'm cutting left side.

    [something beeps]

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : What was that?

David 'Deacon' Kay : Trip wire must've been hidden in the strap.

Yonas : [another beep]  Wait, wait, wait. D-Did you hear that?

David 'Deacon' Kay : Yeah. We triggered a failsafe. We gotta get this off him now.

    Yonas : Come on, please!

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Yonas, Yonas. Look at me. Look at me. You're gonna be fine.

  • Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Letting these guys get away again is inexcusable!

David 'Deacon' Kay : Hondo, come on. The situation was out of control. We just rescued a hostage. That's a win.

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : We have four hostages still missing, and we are nowhere closer to finding out who took 'em. That is not a win! Stop kidding yourselves. You've gotta do better than this. We all do. Otherwise, we are just wasting our damn time and putting lives at risk.

  • Robert Hicks : Everything all right?

David 'Deacon' Kay : What, you mean other than barely surviving an explosion?

Robert Hicks : I mean at home. I saw another approval form for a moonlighting gig on my desk.

David 'Deacon' Kay : Oh, yeah, that was before all this had happened. I doubt I'll make it tonight, so you can... you can ignore it.

Robert Hicks : Oh. That would've been the fourth one this week, right?

David 'Deacon' Kay : Yeah. I'm just trying to bank some extra cash before the baby comes.

Robert Hicks : Deac, come on. There's "I'm about to have a kid" moonlighting, and then there's "I'm about to lose the house" moonlighting. Which is it?

David 'Deacon' Kay : Somewhere in the middle. It started with the baby. Then some pipes burst. Then a couple investments came up short, and, uh, one just happened after the other.

    Robert Hicks : Been there.

David 'Deacon' Kay : Usually I make it up with overtime, but with these budget cuts...

Robert Hicks : Damn. I didn't realize it was that bad. Look, um, if you and Annie need some help...

David 'Deacon' Kay : I appreciate it. I'm handling it.

Robert Hicks : All right. But the offer still stands. Some advice?

    David 'Deacon' Kay : Sure.

Robert Hicks : I know you're spread thin, but the one thing you won't regret later is spending time with your wife and kids. Do it while you still can.

  • David 'Deacon' Kay : Mr. Mekonnen, is there anything that you can tell us about the people that were holding you?

Yonas : Uh, I don't know. I was blindfolded, and... when I did see them, they wore masks.

Christina 'Chris' Alonso : You were in the van with them after they fitted you with the bomb. How long was the drive to the office building?

Yonas : Fifteen, twenty minutes. But I never saw them.

David 'Deacon' Kay : What about the place where you were being held? I mean, i-it could be anything. Something you smelled, maybe heard?

Yonas : There was something. This nonstop pounding from outside. Steady, like a... a hammer hitting a nail, but... much, much louder. I could feel it in my whole body.

Christina 'Chris' Alonso : Like a construction site, maybe?

    Yonas : I don't know.

Christina 'Chris' Alonso : [playing a sound on her phone]  Something like this?

    Yonas : Exactly like that.

Christina 'Chris' Alonso : It's a hydraulic pile driver. You can thank my Uncle Sarzo for that.

David 'Deacon' Kay : You'd need a permit for something like that.

  • Jessica Cortez : Hondo, I just spoke with building security. Shots are coming from the twelfth floor. It's under renovation. They must've used a construction elevator to get up there.

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Roger that.

    [the team moves in]

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : The last time you thought you had them cornered...

David 'Deacon' Kay : They had some surprises waiting.

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Stay sharp.

  • David 'Deacon' Kay : Hold your fire!

    Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Deacon!

David 'Deacon' Kay : No, trust me! Trust me! Hold fire!

  • David 'Deacon' Kay : It's not the Emancipators. It's the hostages. Look. You all right?

    Cindy Martinez : Yeah.

David 'Deacon' Kay : You're safe now. They wanted us coming in, guns blazing, killing 'em all, just like the last time.

Jim Street : [finding a rifle set up on a tripod]  It's remote-controled. Also like last time.

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Deacon, how'd you know?

David 'Deacon' Kay : It's her bracelet. Her daughter has one just like it.

Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson : Great eye.

David 'Deacon' Kay : Well, like you always say, it's in the details.

  • Dominique Luca : Hey. What's going on?

Jim Street : Uh, we were just saying we should all go and get a drink, celebrate.

Victor Tan : Luca, your place?

Dominique Luca : You serious? What about CrossFit? Date night?

Christina 'Chris' Alonso : I just talked to Ty and Kira. Date night, it ended an hour ago, so I'm free.

Victor Tan : Yeah, and there's no way I'm working out after running all those stairs.

Dominique Luca : Oh, man. Hey, Deac. Hey, you still got that moonlighting gig?

    [seeing Deacon is distracted]

    Dominique Luca : Deac.

David 'Deacon' Kay : Uh, sorry, Luca, not tonight. I should go see my family.

Dominique Luca : All right, understood. But the rest of you good to go?

  • Annie Kay : You're home? I thought you'd be working one gig or the other.

David 'Deacon' Kay : No, I canceled. I, uh, missed my family. What's wrong?

Annie Kay : Can we afford for you to take the night off? I feel terrible even saying that. I...

David 'Deacon' Kay : Yeah, look. A-Annie, look at me. We're fine. We're going to be fine. I've got this under control. I promise.
