The Tapanuli Orangutan was identified as an entirely new species in November 2017, the first great ape to be identified as a new species in almost 100 years. They are found only in the Batan Toru forest in Sumatra, and there are less than 800, making the Tapanuli Orangutan the rarest great ape on the planet.
