A fresh start to 2019....
arindamdas-4189213 April 2019
I don't write reviews for series very often, and definitely not for ones I haven't even finished, but this drama is such an exception for me that I feel like I have to tell everyone I know how much I love it. The action scenes are lit. Everything about this drama is pretty good, be it the story, the characters, the comedy, the direction. A basic rundown: if you're looking for comedy, watch this show. If you're looking for heartfelt characters, watch this show. If you're looking for a gritty cop show with in-depth cases, don't watch this show, watch an OCN drama. I'd tell everyone of you to give it a go...

UNDERRATED - BEST ACTION COMEDY SERIES!
ronelioramos8 October 2020
SURELY ONE OF THE BEST AND DEFINITELY THE BEST ACTION-COMEDY SERIES. I have watched hundreds of TV series and this is absolutely PERFECT and MOST SATISFYING TO WATCH. You'll never be bored in this Kdrama as there is always to look after every episode. No problem for non-Catholics because it does not focus on religion - the plot and lessons are applicable for everyone no matter where you preference may be. Must watch especially during this time of pandemic - will definitely entertain and cheer you up! Kudos to all the artists and crew! FANTASTIC JOB!!!! Hoping for a Season 2!

A RARE underrated GEM.
woonila4 February 2021
I'm a K-Drama fan because it's mostly clean viewing with no BS agenda like most Hollyweird shows, I've seen hundreds of K-dramas, and The Fiery Priest was such a treat, thoroughly enjoyable. I rewatch it when I feel down and it still lifts my mood.

The story, the cast, the directing, the dialogs, the action scenes, the heartwarming scenes, the goofy scenes, all blending together for such a fun, feel-good feast on the eyes and mind. I've stopped watching so many other dramas that don't reel me in by the end of 1st episode, but I couldn't stop watching this one, and it's so rare when everything in a drama comes together so well, every aspect complements another.

Not one unlikeable cast, even the bad guys are likeable! I especially LOVE charismatic Father Kim, Sister Kim, and baddie Jang Ryong!

Worthy Worthy, I laughed, cried and laughed again
bironautoo19 July 2023
The characters are all on point, love the female prosecutor, she is so beautiful and gangster at the same time, the nun, the Priests are so perfectly selected for their roles.

It's starts up serious then somewhere in between becomes comical then serious again. It's all over the place but it is properly put together. I literally rewound certain scenes just to laugh again. First hilarious Korean series I've watched.

Even the bad guy is good to watch you kind of end up liking him cuz he's such a good actor. Big kudos to the scriptwriters You can never guess the direction of the storyline and that is what I like in the South Korean serieses as this makes them more interesting to watch.

Any series with no cursing and no sexual content is 100% to me and this is one of it. Keep soaring high South Korea take over Netflix.

Bit slow but hilarious
Misss2518 March 2022
The story is about a priest who has anger issue and recently transferred to another church. After transfering there, the priest realized, some people are trying to uproot the crunch for their own benefits. Soon, his mentor is found dead and the police closed the case saying '',He commited suicide ''. However, the priest knows his mentor cannot commit suicide as it is considered as sin. He sets out to find the culprits. Will he able to find the culprits?

The angry priest made this drama more watchable. His anger constantly made me laugh. Even his partners a priest, a nun, a female and male police made this hilarious. Their every action scenes turned into comedy. Moreover, the boob cut boy(donno why I loved his hair too much :), delivery man, prosecutor activities are funny. Apart from comedy, every episode has twist in it which are totally unbelievable. Though I enjoyed it wholly, however, it's bit lengthy drama. I guess, it would be better, if it had lesser episodes.

Exciting, Moving, and Hilariously Funny!
spasek5 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I've been watching TV shows for over 45 years. I've been watching K-dramas for the last four. And frankly, the Koreans seem to be masters at combining humor and drama, deftly shifting from one to the other. Nobody else does it better.

"The Fiery Priest" sees a Catholic priest--Father Kim--, who has no compunction about laying down some serious whoop-a** on criminals and those who seek to harm others. Of course, not all is as it seems as we learn about his backstory.

The series is about murder, political corruption, religious corruption, and the power of the underworld's influence on exploiting the weak and helpless. At our center, is Father Kim, who has a temper to match his fighting prowess. I think if Father Kim lives to be an old man, he'll likely die of a heart attack.

Detective Gu soon becomes his sidekick. Initially Gu is an inept coward who can't seem to do anything right. Caught up in the corruption, he finds himself to be a shell of a cop in name only. Gu reminds me of a Gilligan or Stan Laurel...someone who causes more trouble than he resolves. Much of this is done for comedic effect, and you'll likely split your sides laughing at the antics of Detective Gu.

We also have the fiery Prosecutor Park, also caught up in the corruption, who quickly finds that she has a special place in her heart for Father Kim, even though they act more like a old, bitter married couple.

Once again, to masterful effects, this drama is very story and character driven with fun and exciting action sequences. In many ways, this series has something for everyone.

The humor is off-the-charts, and it's always extremely effective. I don't recall ever laughing so hard throughout a K-drama.

And yet, at its center, the story is about justice and caring for those few people within your inner circle. People who end up having your back and loving you no matter what you do. It's also proof that, despite the trials and tribulations, criminals and evil-doers never win in the end.

If you're looking for plenty of action as well as a series that is outrageously funny, you really can't miss with "The Fiery Priest!" Looking forward to Season 2!

Just because the casts were awesome
at_RivyuwMamak4 May 2019
In the beginning, the action was solid, the jokes were funny. But like other kdrama, at some point it started to drag. Don't really remember, but maybe around episode 10-19. Then the story escalated on ep 20. Then it dragged again on episode 37-40.

Found my self skipped so many scenes. The action scenes became tiring, the jokes became dull and way too comical. This could have been waaay better if the story wasn't poorly executed.

Love Kim Sung Kyun since "Reply 88" and of course big appreciation to Kim Nam Gil for doing all the action sceness without stunt

I wasn't able to watch the entire show because i lost interest after 6 episodes so I just watched the end. It might be good because there were good action scenes and it was supposed to be comedy so I guess 5 was ok.

Chaokage2 February 2021
I had so much fun watching this series and I can't wait for season 2. the story was meticulously written and the last episodes were incredible. The main character pretty much transformed and I got the same vibe I got from watching The Man From Nowhere. Easily one of the funniest Korean series out there.

A priest with badass Martial Arts Skills - Bidam gets his redemption
jgardiner-871-7267296 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The Priest Kim Nam Gill is using his Bidam like skills on these bad people. Love it. So happy that this is now on Netflix and I can watch the whole thing and not just bits. It starts hard and goes hard. He's so awesome. We so love his fighting skills makes us just fangirl all over him. Such a babe. He looks big with his priest gears on but underneath his clothes he's still the slim gorgeous guy we know and love.

He was an undercover agent for the NIS who became a priest. He looks so immaculate in black, love him. He is so good at acting and in this drama he's funny too. I have missed watching this formidable, impressive and terrifying actor.

It really is a sad story about the other Priest that was murdered and made out to be a molestor and a thief when he was one of the good ones and he wasn't allowed to be buried in the cemetery because they said that he had committed suicide. I don't understand those catholic ways/traditions. So that priest had saved his life after he had been attacked and was dying. That is how he became a priest.

Oh this is so much better than the previews I watched and so deserving of the all the awards that it won for 2019. This is the cleverest and funniest Korea Drama I have ever watched. I love these Korean women when they play badass fighters. Geum Sae Rok/Seo Seung Ah was the one in this one a new young Korean actor I hadn't seen before. She was so cool.

This drama has everything in it, thrills, spills, crime, comedy, mystery, friendship, drama and badass action from both males and females. Its such an incredible and powerful drama played by amazing and extraordinary actors. Most of them with superb and astounding Martial Arts talents expertise and techniques.

The Priest Kim Nam Gil/Kim Hae Il / Michael is up against some ruthless, heartless and vindictive foe not just the criminals but his old adversaries from his secret agent history. All of them relentless , cruel and merciless. All trying to hurt him deeply because of some grudge that have against him. They are mercenaries hired by Kim Min Jae/Lee Joong Kwon (NIS agent) to hurt him and his friends. They all served together in the NIS. This ex-agent has driven the priest over the edge. Right till the end they kept using his loved ones as bait to aggravate his anger because he Kim Hae Il had anger issues that he had little control over.. The last episode was reminiscent of Bidam when his enemies brought 15 men to fight him. Seems like they were jealous of his efficiency and his clinical nature when working. It wasn't as gory as Bidam because he didn't have a sword but he was just as determined and effective. It was like a fighting show. Its like Bidam gets his redemption ....... Just my opinion.

Go Joon/Hwang Cheol Bum was the protagonist in this drama but I couldn't help but feel something pitiful for this guy. One of those bad boys that make your heart flutter during parts of the story and you had to admire his fighting skills. The mercenaries are after him as well. He's a spunk when he's dress up in normal clothes and not his usual over dressing. Although broken hearted, upset and seemed to have killer instincts he still seemed to have a heart. His men meant a lot to him even though he treated them cruelly at times.

I never thought a drama about a priest could be so fine and so well constructed or that I would enjoy it so much but Kim Nam Dam over extended himself. So worthy of being on my favourite actors list. Such an outstanding drama. Woah!

Sorry for getting angry, Lord.
alaningle717 May 2021
A priest investigates the murder of his mentor, the priest is an ex member of the Korean secret service so knows some moves. An action packed comedy with a small band around the priest getting into conflict with all the corrupt departments in the city who are willing to go to any lengths to protect their illicit schemes. Good characters and entertaining acting all round but they should have reduced the episodes and tightened the script.

Very complex, strong comedic element, lots of action, characters you will miss
leahcubed20 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
10/10 is my rating. This is a 2019 South Korean Comedy, Crime Action drama with either 20, 1 hour or 40 1/2 hour episodes.

I will first provide a synopsis then review

Synopsis

Many combat soldiers suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and when coupled with guilt resulting from innocents in the combat zone It can be severe. Kim Hae-il / Michael Kim (Kim Nam-Gil) has severe PTSD from things that happened when he was with the National Intelligence Service (NIS). Hae-il found solace in the church when his father figure and mentor, Priest Lee Young-joon (Jung Dong-hwan) encouraged him to heal through faith. Following the murder of Priest Lee, which corrupt officials proclaim a suicide, Hae il is determined to call on his skills and resources as a former NIS agent to solve the crime and obtain justice. Comedy surrounds the simple fact that there is a priest who is willing to use force to punish transgressors. Hae il must not only combat a group of gangsters but corrupt officials such as female prosecutor Park Kyung-sun (Lee Hanee). Kyung sun and others are surprised when this priest says you are not welcome in God's house if you think you can shed your sin and go out and sin again. His first requirement is don't come to confession until you genuinely apologize to those you sinned against. With near super hero like skills, the Fiery Father will take them all on, save a few souls and get those beyond redemption locked up.

Review

I waited a long time before watching this. Have seen nearly 300 Asian dramas before watching this one. I don't know why but with everything I read up to that point I thought it would be slap stick and it definitely is not. It definitely has a central comedic element but it is situationally funny. The priest himself is not simply a character that could use anger management, his character is deep and very compelling. Even the bad guys and gals in this have well developed characters and in depth stories. I love a good martial arts action scene and this has plentiful action scenes. The priest has super hero like status. He starts out very misunderstood by all but his mentor but those around him learn, as the viewer does, who he really is and he improves them through his own brand of caring and healing those around him. "When you say that you really sound like a priest," you get renditions of that throughout and will understand that he is definitely a human first. He is definitely one of God"s warriors. For me the timing of watching this was perfect as I feel like I am living through times when justice keeps getting the short stick. So seeing characters that deeply care about what is good and right and morale and not only seek justice but tow justice along sometimes kicking and screaming (you will get the pun if you watch it) is refreshing. I just recommend this one in general. This is another where you will grow to like the characters so much you will miss them when it is over. If you like comedy, crime dramas and/or action then this is definitely one that should be on all those watch lists. If you are looking for romance there are plenty of bromances and it skirts around some flirty scenes, but there is no direct romance. I am one that will rarely watch anything without a romantic element. This one is worth it regardless.

Spoilers

I really did not expect some characters would have a redemption arc and certainly not one I could buy into but the skilled writers for this series proved me wrong. Prosecutor Park or self proclaimed "Phoenix" was a wholely unlikable character in the beginning. She was rude, selfish and corrupt. She was unkind so many times to the main character that I was convinced I would never find her likable. But then their banter became amusing. And then her interactions with him, and I think God inserting some life changing events, started to turn her. But they did not try to jam down your throat that she was suddenly good or that her turn around excused her earlier actions. Same with some of the mobsters. They did not seem capable of redemption but slowly, and believably, you saw some redemption for them and yet they were not let off the hook for their past misdeeds. The priest's dark back story was heart breaking but it clearly exhibited how simply hearing "it wasn't your fault" at the right time, from the right people, can generate emotional healing. His friends and allies also came to understand him so much they knew the level of blame he would put on himself and how he would react when someone around him was hurt to get at him.

Quite entertaining
kinogems8 January 2022
I picked this up because it's leaving Netflix so it was a quick watch. I really enjoyed it. Even though the plot isn't that strong the humor carries through. It was entertaining enough and Nam Gil did a great job at playing the anti hero sort of character.

So so good! One of the best action comedydrama!
shareen_shany22 October 2022
Definitely recommend to watch this drama if thinking of taking a break from any romantic drama.

This action drama with added comedy in it will for sure keeps one entertain!

Had watched the ML/Kim Nam Gil drama "Live up to your name" & got hooked! Found his 2nd drama on Netflix & binge watched all episodes in 2 days!

The plot is clear from the start, each episode will either make you frustrated, irritated, happy, sad or laugh! It's that good! No long winded draggy episode! The ML is so versatile such an enjoyable drama.

The drama gets interesting with each episode & gets even great when the ML/ Father Kim jpin forces with Det. Seo the young rookie officer, then gain trust from the veteran officer Det. Goo, they are so funny together! Then the 2 fantastic guys Yo Han the part timer & the Thai food delivery guy Songsak! Not forgetting Sister Kim the former gambler & child actor Father Han & lastly the crazy prosecutor Park.

Each has a role & they compliment each other. The bond gets stronger & tighter. A little family!

Wish they make season 2! It's so enjoyable & awesome!

Looking outt for more KNG drama!

Best character figures
eli-stuttgart25 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
An original drama that you don't know from K-Dramas because of its special characters. The highlight is clearly the spirited priest. At the beginning I didn't think much of him, because impatience and aggression reinforced a person's infantile side. But behind this facade lies an injured person who tries to save his own soul and that of others by turning to God and fighting against unfairness. However, the tension was missing. No question, the fight scenes were cool, convincing and interesting to watch. Also, the tragic scenes like the death of the old priest and the reflection of the process or the attack on the young priest, while Kim Hae could only watch helplessly. It was all touching and brought me to tears, but the plot dragged on and was unnecessarily done dirty. The plot was good, but it deviated from the actual concept and this was to find the killer of the old priest. Then it was actually about most of the time about corruption, positions of power, authority ... not to forget the money and revenge on Joong Kwon, which was the wish from the beginning, but a good allocation for a just reason had emerged. Now to the characters: everyone was adorable, the optimal cast was found and everyone played their role really well. Each of them made everything much funnier and warmer. The relationship between the priest and the policeman was the funniest because they were always insulted or were after a fight. I would have liked to know a little more about the policeman and his late partner, and get to know his melancholy side. The young policewoman, on the other hand, appealed to me because of her ambitious fighting spirit, but it has gradually faded and turned into a raving teen that seemed naive. The members of the Church, the nun and the young priest, who were very skeptical of the main character, became a family and were also influenced by his character, so that they developed. The authorized signatory, a very funny character who appears as a strong and self-confident woman, but is actually very insecure and hides it under her insults and her imaginary reveals. But her mischievous character gives her a charisma that enchants everyone. However, she should have taken the priest's side much earlier. Now to the "enemies" of the drama, who are reluctant to call them that, because they too have had a warm place in our hearts. Cheol - Bum got a special figure that was taken for granted at the beginning because he is without a doubt the bad guy. But he increasingly takes on the face of a real person, he does not want to admit it himself and show that he has weaknesses just like everyone else. He buried his pain (death from the old priest (father)) and worries (his followers) very deep, so that he came across cold, especially because he unfairly beat his loyal assistant. A closer bond between the priest towards the end would have made all this better. Now to the friendship of the Thai fighting legend and the washcloth ... which will develop into an even bigger and stronger friendship, which is just adorable. Have given the audience a lesson with their situation that the situation can also be seen differently (bullying - loneliness dampened - origin doesn't matter). All in all, the series was only good because of the characters, where you could see the change in the end and the real faces of the "power figures". Other called: fear rabbits, weak people ... I hope some relationships will have a stronger bond and more screen time in Part 2.

PS. The absurd scene with the diarrhea was exaggerated.

Thoughtful but tremendous fun
avrilkairos11 February 2023
I haven't finished the series as yet but have found it so delightful thus far that I just had to say something. I had seen this show recommended many times but steered away from the whole "priest with a mission" theme. However, the religious context is well handled while keeping the show a thoroughly exciting mix of comedy and blistering action with just the right note of poignancy for the more serious aspects of the show. Truly worth every second of the watch. The characters are charming(even the main villain somewhat ) for the most part with the male lead being particularly lovable in a world-weary but endearing sort of way. All the elements work without being cliched and the "non-priestly"behavior of the priest is hilarious and refreshing without being disrespectful.

A fun watch
newkrejados8 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The show takes a lot of standard KDrama elements - corruption, cults, female empowerment, and blends it all in a series of humor-laced, action-packed scenes. Keep your eyes peeled for the physical comedy!

Just like this ain't your typical KDrama, these aren't your typical heroes. You have a priest with wicked fighting skills, a gambling nun and a rookie cop who puts veterans to shame. A baddie with a conscience, a former child actor who found a different calling and a sadistic slaughterer without a single redemptive feature. And NASA and the pope thrown in for good measure.

Just two small complaints. What happened to the money? And who was the main crime boss? Would have been epic if it were the church leaders.

Still, it was a fun watch. A touch fluffy at times. A touch annoying sometimes, too. Overall, a cohesive narrative. Definitely worth the watch.

great chemistry and fun packed crime comedy
mysafeshop14 November 2022
I read a storyline for this title somewhere at the time and it didn't appeal to me much, and so I missed out on this comic crime gem when I first started my k-drama journey. Since then I've learned to simply check out any k-drama that catches my eye, and figure out for myself what the theme is and see if the storytelling speaks to me or not. Many gems in many k-drama genres have been discovered since with this approach and this one is no exception. I'm amazed at the chemistry between all of the actors, lead or not, and how they seem to effortlessly play off of each other in even the smallest comic detail/display, kudos to that! I enjoyed this series so much I dont mind revisitting it for the many funny lines (albeit translated) and fun ("couples") fight scenes throughout the storyline, from start to finish - and also the consistent rhythm of the storytelling from the first to the last episode. Simply a great ensemble, great fun and great re-rewatch, much much appreciated!
