- At the hospital, Raul lies unconscious, on a respirator. Maria prays at his bedside,
Outside, the police are getting everyone wounded at the construction site inside. Lewis is holding his wounded shoulder, and tells Tiago that he can do it and Tiago should go home. Tiago wants to go in to see his brother, but Lewis warns that the police will only see Tiago as a Mexican, like the ones who attacked him. Lewis advises Tiago to go round the back, but Tiago refuses and Lewis goes with him.
Reilly and his fellow officers refuse to let Tiago go in, and Lewis points out that he'll bleed to death if he doesn't get treatment. As Tiago and Lewis go past them, Reilly shoves Tiago and they almost fight until Reilly's friends hold him back. Tiago goes in with Lewis, and Vanderhoff is there. He asks Lewis if he saw who shot him, and Lewis claims that he didn't. The watch commander that no one saw anything, and tells them to see him once Lewis gets patched up, so they can sort it out.
Lewis tells Tiago to find his family and he's fine, and sits down. Tiago says that Lewis knows who shot him, and Lewis tells him that he doesn't and neither does Tiago. Before going, Tiago thanks Lewis for his silence.
Tiago goes to the ward and sees a woman weeping over her dead husband's body. He peers into another room where the bodies of the Mexicans are left to lie. He then meets with the doctor, who says that they took care of the officers first and then got to Raul, and they had to open his skull to relieve the pressure after the bullet glances off of his skull. There are bone fragment lodged in the brain, tells Tiago that he'll have to remove Raul from the respirator in three days at the most.
Going to the ward, Tiago finds Maria, Josefina, and Mateo at Raul's bedside. Josefina goes to Tiago and hugs him, and he has Mateo lead Josefina away while he goes to his mother. She tells Tiago to look at what they did to Raul, and insists that Raul isn't going to die in the hospital.
Tiago leads Mateo off and tells him to stay with Maria while he calls in the priest. Mateo tells Tiago that he saw what he did and if Raul died, Tiago isn't a part of the family. Going into the stairwell, Tiago cries.
Later, Tiago and Lewis meet with Vanderhoff. Vanderhoff figures that they' looking at a Mexican uprising, but Lewis doesn't believe it. Unimpressed, the watch commander tells them that City Hall needs it resolved, and tells them to conclude the Haslet case and bring in the killer who he assumes is Mexican. Lewis makes it clear that Vanderhoff wants them to "conclude" the case, not solve it, and Vanderhoff agrees before leaving
As they leave, Tiago and Lewis wonder what their next move is. Lewis points out that Haslet was a choir boy, and Tiago suggests that they check out the choir.
At his office in city hall, Townsend tells Alex that the transportation committee is fucked because the Mexican took care of the motorway. They have no way to build it, and Alex suggests that Townsend have Goss & Ossenberg build it. Townsend figures no one will touch the politically sensitive construction, and Alex suggests that Townsend uses that since people are terrified, they need a champion to defend their interests. She says that the motorway is a symbol now. Townsend worries that they can't exploit dead ops, and Alex tells him that it's not exploiting but honoring.
A barber arrives to give Townsend a trim, so he can look good for the newsreels. Looking on, Alex smiles.
Tiago and Lewis go to Joyful Voices Ministry temple where Haslet was an elder, and Lewis figures that the leade3r, Sister Molly Finnister, is a fraud because he figures everyone is a fraud. An usher says that Molly is preparing for her service and can't meet with them. Lewis threatens to get a search warrant, and the usher goes to get Sister Adelaide.
The two detectives go to see Adelaide, and are led through a room filled with people counting donations. In her office, Adelaide tells them that her daughter is communing with the Lord before her sermon. Lewis asks Adelaide about James Haslet, and Adelaide says Haslet was a deacon and one of the bursars who handled the donations. Adelaide insists that Haslet was a valued member of the church and he had an office there, but the public aren't allowed in the back area. Lewis asks her to show him personally while Tiago stays there, and ushers her out.
Tiago goes down to the church basement and finds Molly going to the stage where she performs. The curtain goes up and the people in the auditorium beyond applaud. Molly accepts their applause, smiling, and talks about how she met a diplomat who asked her where the Lord is. She uses that as a lead in for her first song.
Lewis is in Haslet's office going over his books, hears Molly singing in the distance, and compliments Adelaide's on her daughter's singing. Adelaide says that she thought Mexicans killed Haslet and his family, and Lewis says that it was but he just has to conduct an official investigation. The detective says that he'll take some of Haslet's ledgers with him, and Adelaide tells him that it's the Lord's house that is sanctified in His blood. Lewis tells her that he's more concerned about the blood of Haslet and his family, and leaves with the ledgers.
Molly continues singing and Tiago watches, smiling. After she finishes, Tiago leaves with Lewis, who outside tells his partner that the case is a con. He figures with all the fake evidence, they never looked at who wanted Haslet de3ad. Tiago figures it had something to do with the money, and Lewis agrees. He says that he'll grab Haslet's records at his downtown construction office, while Tiago finds some way to talk to Molly privately. Lewis tells him to go slowly and figures Adelaide has something to hide and they're going to find out what.
At the beach, Peter is reading a book as his sons play in the sand and build a sand castle. Peter sees Elsa with Frank and goes over to talk to her. He says that it's his day off and she asks if the sun is good for Frank's asthma. Peter confirms that it is and invites Elsa and Frank to join him and his boys. Elsa accepts his offer.
At the hospital, the nurse tells Mateo that Maria can't be on the floor praying because it's unsanitary. Once the nurse leaves, Mateo goes to get soda from a machine. He breaks into tears, and Reilly and his men come over to mock him. When Mateo turns to him, Reilly slaps him and slams him against the pop machine, and asks if he's crying about the cops the Mexicans killed. Reilly says that his partner got his eye shot out and jams his thumb into Mateos's eye and tells him to cry.
Pachuco leader Fly Rico comes in and loudly extends his switchblade, and says that he wants to buy a pop. Reilly tells him that it's not his problem, but Rico repeats his request and says that there's a city of him and only four of them. The cops leave, and Rico asks Mateo why he didn't scream. Mateo says that he was too scared, Rico introduces himself and says that his uncle is upstairs, and he told him not to go to the protest but his uncle wouldn't listen. He asks why Mateo is there, and Mateo says that his uncle is there. Rico asks if Mateo knows The Cat, and tells him to find him there later. When Mateo asks why, Rico says that he didn't scream and he's a Pachuco, and walks off.
Elsa and Peter leave Frank to play with Peter's boys, and the boys talk about "Beau Geste". Frank talks about how the toy soldiers on the parapets are all dead and smiles. Meanwhile, Peter and Elsa talk about how Germany and how it's bled, and then how their spouses don't come to the beach. She says that she look at the ocean and dreams of going anywhere, and brings up how she and her sister left Berlin because there was no food when there should have been. Elsa says that she met her future husband then, and at least he had food. She asks Peter where he would go, and he says Tahiti like she did.
As the sun sets, Peter offers Elsa and Frank ride. She turns him down but says that she'll see him in his office when she brings Frank in. Frank says goodbye to Tom and Trevor, and Tom looks back at Frank as the Crafts go.
At his press conference, Townsend holds up the blood-covered shirt of one of the dead cops, West, as the reporters take photos. The councilman points out the officer's widow and talks about how she'll have to tell her son he'll never see his father again. Townsend says that the animals who killed West and his other officers must be brought to justice, and they have to let everyone Mexican know that their crime will stand. He says that the motorway has become a symbol, and he' going to introduce a motion in council to have the motorway named in honor of the dead officer. Townsend vows that he will build the motorway in honor of all of them.
Tiago goes to the downtown extension of Joyful Voices and finds security guards taking the names of Mexicans line up at the door. He sees workers delivering lettuce, follows them into the kitchen posing as a worker, and sees Molly at a sink, cleaning dishes. Tiago goes over and asks if he can ask her questions, and Molly agrees. The detective asks her about Haslet, and she says that Adelaide oversees the financial doings while she sings. Tiago tells her that he saw her earlier, and assures her that she was great.
Tiago joins her in washing dishes, and Molly admits that she didn't know Haslet well, but she and Adelaide had dinner with him and his family the previous year. She admits that she finds it hard getting close to the parishioners because they've become attached to her. Molly describes Haslet as "level-headed" and says that parishioners become attached to the temple, but not her. She talks about how she doesn't exist to them except as a voice on the radio.
A temple worker, Randolph, comes over and tells Tiago to go back to the truck. Molly says that they were just talking and tells Randolph to go on. Once Randolph leaves, Molly sarcastically tells Tiago that Randolph is there to protect her virtue. Tiago asks why she isn't out front where more people can see her, and Molly explains that that she become a distraction and she likes it in the back because it's quiet. She says that her calling is pastoral, and she doesn't seek or want the publicity. Molly picks up on the fact that Tiago isn't sure why he joined the police force to help people. Tiago says that he's sure, and Molly says that she didn't have a choice and Adelaide had her on the revival circuit when she was 4. Molly asks Tiago if he's been saved, and he asks if she's offering. She asks him to get her some plates to wash.
That night, Lewis and three member of his group park down the street from a movie theater. They argue about the movie, Goss comes out of a nearby hotel with someone they don't recognize, and Lewis takes photographs of the newcomer. One of the others tells Lewis that they should call the FBI. Lewis figures that Hoover doesn't care about the Jews he tells the two men, Sam Bloom and Anton Chevic, to follow Goss while he and the woman, Dottie Minter, follow the newcomer, a kid.
At the Craft house, Peter and Linda have sex. Peter imagines Linda as Elsa, who smiles up at him and becomes much more enthusiastic than Linda was. Elsa claws at Peter's back, and Peter finishes. Afterward, Linda tells Peter not to ever embarrass her like that again, and says that she's not a tart. Peter agrees and apologizes.
At the temple, Tiago meets with Molly in the kitchen and over coffee she describes how a mother asked her to cure his son, who is in an iron lung. Molly wonders if she brought the boy comfort, and figures that he saw into her heart. She admits that she wanted the boy to die so he could be with God. Tiago says that his brother is dying, and they need to take him off the respirator. Molly asks if Tiago believes in God, and Tiago says that he doesn't. She asks if he's sure, and Tiago describes that his father died when he was a child and he thought he saw Santa Muerte. Molly tells Tiago to find grace within himself before finding grace in Raul before letting him die. She says that she cut her wrists after the boy died, and invites Tiago to come to her if Raul dies.
Adelaide and Randolph come in and Adelaide tells Molly to come to the car. Molly introduces Tiago and outside, Adelaide tells Tiago to speak with Molly if he has to through their lawyer.
Sam and Anton follow Goss, and Goss' driver goes up into the hills.
Lewis and Dottie follow the kid to Pasadena and then Cal-Tech. The kid parks, gets out, and goes into the basement of a nearby building. Lewis follows him in and sees the kid working at a desk on equations. There are signs up saying that the building is for research, and explosive materials are stored inside.
At the hospital, Maria lights a candle and places it at the base of Raul's bed. She prays to Santa Muerte,
Goss' driver pulls over on an empty stretch of road up in the hills. Anton and Sam stop as well, and the driver gets out and shoots them both dead. He goes over and makes sure they're dead, then shoves their car down the hill where it explodes. Goss calmly stands by his car and lights a cigarette.
The candle blows out, and Santa Muerte arrives in the ward room. Raul disappears from the bed, and Maria sees a trail of Raul's blood leading away from his head wound. She follows the trail, which leads to the door. Raul appears in front of Maria, and he reaches for his mother's face to touch it.
