The script was written by Dennis Severse and is a semi-autobiographical account of true events from his childhood. Dennis later worked as the doorman at the Chateau Marmont.
While laying poolside at the Chateau Marmont Caylee Cowan received a call out of the blue from movie producer Gary Michael Walters for an audition on 11/11 to be the opening act for the "The Eagles" during their 2020 world tour. The audition was held by casting director Dustin Cole Blackburn on Monday, November 11th, 2019 at 11:00am (PST). The waiting room was full of blonde girls in red dresses who were instructed to walk around the audition room and put on a record that would begin the Eagles opening song "Hotel California"
Holt McCallany read "Our Summer of Song" and hired a writer to do a coverage report on the script. Caylee Cowan was sad to see that the report was mostly negative. The coverage report said, "Moreover, the songs mentioned in the soundtrack for this script are not even as "cool" as the musicians that appeared in Vinyl (i.e. Bowie, Lou Reed, etc.) The writer seems to be primarily interested in the pukiest sounds of the 70s like Linda Ronstadt." To the dismay of Caylee Cowan she gave Dennis Severse the coverage report to which he wrote "Pukiest sounds? Maybe do a little music history because those bands are considered more and more iconic as the decades pass. Linda Ronstatd was a major influence on all kinds of bands in the 70s. Hell the Eagles were her back-up band and she convinced them to go out and become the Eagles."
The doorman at the Chateau Marmont was inspired by Caylee Cowan who frequented the hotel on numerous occasions one time running around the hotel in a red dress without shoes. He gave her a completed script one year later.
In preparation for her role as Emily Walker Caylee Cowan found a red and white striped hat and green corduroy pants and carried a GAF two-tone model-G View-master with her for several months.
