Sex, drugs and rock’n’roll were but three of the shared subjects animating the Annecy Animation Showcase, presented as part of the Marché du Film at last month’s Cannes Film Festival. Marking its fifth edition, this year’s work-in-progress spotlight imparted a decidedly adult flavor, with a preponderance of showcased titles tackling outré material for mature crowds.
“On the market side, adult-skewing projects are no longer a trend,” says Annecy chief Mickaël Marin. “The form is now well-established. Of course, global platforms have opened new doors and widened the field of possibilities, so we encourage financiers and broadcasters if not to take risks, then to at least explore new avenues beyond traditional family animation.”
Of the five projects presented at the Cannes showcase, “Hina is Beautiful,” from Japan’s Iwaisawa Kenji, and “Rock Bottom,” from Spain’s María Trénor, both deploy a similar, rotoscoped 2D style towards wildly different ends.

Validated at Cannes by a big U.S. sale for Pablo Berger’s “Robot Dreams,” Catalan animation is on a roll – thanks to ambitious creatives muscular state funding, cutting edge talent and diverse stories that captivate global audiences.
“Catalonia’s long had a strong tradition of important animation production companies, which developed ambitious projects,” Edgar Garcia, general director of Catalan cultural company agency Icec, told Variety.
“Over the years, this resulted in the creation of smaller studios with highly qualified professionals on the creative and technical sides. Those studios and professionals are now working for productions all over the world,” he added.
Garcia points to a dedicated Icec fund for animation, features and series, with a €4.5 million ($4.9 million) budget for 2023. Of course, we believe this support scheme reflects the quality and creativity of Catalan animation, but has also helped nurture it. As the whole of the audiovisual production in Catalonia,...

Jake Bongiovi, budding actor and son of rocker Jon Bon Jovi, is one of three young stars who have joined the cast of the comedy “Rockbottom,” Variety can report exclusively.
Bongiovi, a considerable social media presence and native to the music space, will join McKaley Miller (“Ma”) and Teala Dunn (“Crush”) in the feature project from writer-director and SFX makeup guru Todd Tucker (“The Terror of Hallow’s Eve”). The actors will orbit lead Tom Everett Scott.
Tucker’s script, co-written with Greg Zekowski, follows 1980s hair metal band CougarSnake, whose career ended just as it was starting due to clashes over the direction of the group. In the present day, a mention of the band in an interview by Billboard-charting, Gen-z music star Bryce Cooper (Brandon Butler), whose absentee father introduced him to CougarSnake as a child, creates a frenzy to find the members of the group and reunite them...
