Originally conceived and filmed as two separate volumes, they were later combined into one seamless film solely for festival screenings.

April's line "I'm your manic pixie dream girl come true." is a reference to the film Ruby Sparks (2012) which also deals with a fictional female character brought to life by a male writer.
The kitchen where April and Mark have their fight contains a note on the fridge listing some groceries, one of them being "red onion" which was the working title of the film.
