Snakes on a Plane (2006)
This is why popcorn was invented!
What a total blast! How many times can you remember people cheering and applauding in a movie theater? They did when I saw it and there was plenty of it.
Don't let all the over-hype make you think that it's a bad movie. Sure it's a totally formula plot riddled with clichés but they have so much fun with them that you don't care. Samuel L. Jackson looked like he had a blast shooting this one and that comes across on the screen.
If you're still not sure, catch it at a matinée but this is a must for the big screen. Once you've seen it, you'll be glad you did.
I just can't believe how much fun it was, I can't wait to see it again!
Storytelling (2001)
What a pretentious piece of crap
With a forgettable plot, painful dialog and non-existent directing, this is a waste of film.
The first story "fiction" is by far the worst of the two. Dialog is delivered with pauses after nearly every line as if they just spoke some profound words that will be remembered for the ages. All it really shows is the director's lack of purpose. It's as if he's trying to be avant-guard or biting but all he ends up doing is looking ridiculous.
The second story "non-fiction" is not as painful but still is a joke. None of the characters are even remotely believable and just come across as poor imitations of cliché's that aren't valid anymore.
If this was a first time director then I would expect this type of result....but it isn't. All it shows is the director's shot at trying to recapture his initial creative success and missing.....badly.
Out in Fifty (1999)
What a mess
Where to begin....
Well it has every hallmark of being a first time indie movie, not that this is a bad thing but it fails to rise above that. For instance, one hallmark of a no budget movie is to beg recognizable actors to do bit parts then have the main character go meet them for a 2 minute scene. Then come up with some way of going to see that person. Now repeat this about 50 times and you have this movie. Even Mickey Rourke as one of the two main actors looks bored in this.
The camera is almost always hand-held. I was getting sick after about 10 minutes. The characters cliché. The renegade alcoholic or drug addicted cop, the ex-con trying to go straight. The plot easily predictable.
Now I give the director/writer/star (same person) big credit for actually getting this made but what a mess.
I can't recommend this to anyone. It's not gritty, edgy or anything like that. It's just a mess.
