An over-long, boring disappointment
17 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Disney continues the C.S. Lewis' Narnia tales, but this time makes a boring, over-long, disappointing movie.

The setup: After returning to England for a year, the four Pevensie siblings respond to a horn calling for help and return to the magical land of Narnia, only to find that in Narnia 1,300 years have passed. Their old castle is in ruins, and it develops that Narnia has been conquered by some people called Telmarines, who have the accents, spade beards, and helmets of stereotypical Spanish conquistadors. Prince Caspian, who called for help, is one of'em, but his uncle wants him dead so the uncle can become king. The intrepid Pevensie quartet size up the situation and decide to help Caspian and simultaneously rid Narnia of the invaders, with the aid of the usual Narnian characters, including dwarfs, centaurs, a talking badger, and a talkative mouse whose manner & dialog were stolen from Antonio Banderas' Puss-in-Boots in "Shrek 2". Aslan makes a brief but effective (plotwise) appearance near the end but my fave villainess, Tilda Swinton as the White Witch, has only an all-too-short cameo.

I thought the plot was erratically developed and the dialog occasionally funny but pretty much unimaginatively routine for high-fantasy stories. My big problem was that I was never brought to care for any of the characters, whose motivations are murky. The young cast put no emotion into their parts.

I found myself realizing that I was bored several times during the flick's 2 hour & 24 minute length. The whole purpose of the movie seemed to be just to set up the big climactic CGI battle at the end. Unfortunately, the CGI was not up to Peter Jackson's standards, even tho it included a forest of trees that turned into Ents and a flood that copied a scene from "The Fellowship of the Ring".

My favorite moment came in a scene toward the end, when Prince Caspian had his evil uncle at sword point, with both characters talking in their Spanish accents. I wanted to yell out the perfect line for our hero to say: "My name is Prince Caspian. You murdered my father. Prepare to die!" Heck, since most of the flick was derivative of the "Lord of the Rings" movies, why not throw in some "Princess Bride", too?

So much fun that I forgot how bad it was supposed to be.
21 November 2004
"National Treasure" is as bad as all the negative reviews say--stoopid story full of preposterous situations and events, with dumb dialog.

I enjoyed every minute of it.

For me, it was an excellent guilty pleasure. It was fast-paced, so I never had time to dwell on such silliness as Nicholas Cage digging for 30 seconds into the snow near the north pole and finding--not just the lost ship he was hunting, but the ship's name plate so he didn't have to wonder for one second what he'd found! But I didn't care! And every explosion and other disaster was telegraphed ahead, BUT I DIDN'T CARE! All the torches left in the secret cave for 150 years burned upon being lit as tho they had been soaked in kerosene yesterday! BUT I DIDN'T CARE! I found it smoothly edited and so event-filled that I just got carried along. Diane Kruger (Helen in "Troy") once more is an ice queen who can't act, but every time she was on screen there was a closeup of her gorgeous model's face, so I DIDN'T CARE! Sean Bean, playing the villain, who was the only actor present, performed in proper evil fashion, and I liked Cage's sorta comic-relief sidekick. Never mind the plot: it's irrelevant.

The bottom line is that while I was watching the dang flick, I was recognizing everything that was wrong with it and simultaneously realizing that I was enjoying the experience. It was wonderful mindless fun!

Serendipity (2001)

Fluff.
6 October 2001
A nice bit of predictable fluff at a scary time in our lives. Harmless and reasonably charming, with an excellent cast battling a mostly non-funny, non-inventive script. (And I wish Molly Shannon had had more to do.) Romantic comedies generally have no surprises at the end: girl gets boy (and vice versa). To make them interesting, they need sparkling dialog and surprising events along the way. Unfortunately, "Serendipity" has only more and more preposterous coincidences. But it may do well: These times may demand fluff.

Big Wars (1993 Video)
Not "Big" Enough
2 April 2000
I rented "Big Wars" because I like dark, mecha-stuffed Anime. I got my share of shadowy skylines and dreary airports, but the movie does not fit the title. One would expect to encounter many many battles, but there is only one small battle. Slow-moving, and with its fair share of subplot, I wouldn't suggest this movie unless you want to study the animation and mood.
