The Cell (2000)
Visually stimulating, but nothing new.
While this film may be beautiful, that's about all it is. The plot is lacking and is poorly written, and the acting couldn't be worse if it were a junior high school production. Even as beautiful as it is, it's truly nothing special. Tarsem Singh merely spends just under 2 hours of time visually name dropping everyone from the Quay Brothers to Andrei Tarkovsky to Damien Hirst and I really don't mean that in a positive way. I wonder if lawsuits will come about..
Pensão Globo (1999)
A beautiful AIDS film...
This film, its social commentary aside, is easily one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen, with its very personal camera work and (this is the first time I've seen a film maker use this well) superimposing of images. What's most interesting, I think, is that Muller took the film beyond simple experimentalism and made the piece one of the most impressive AIDS films I've seen since Christopherson's "Tainted Love" film/music video.
