left something to be desired...
5 October 1998
I have to agree with previous comments that, while the story could've been really good, it just wasn't brought out that way. You could see a lot of Art McClane. Alec Baldwin, who I think can be phenomenal in roles such as this one, was only given a tiny part and quite frankly, the movie wouldn't have suffered much if his character hadn't even been IN it. Too many unbelievable aspects to the story (for something based on a very real possibility). I've seen them both in much better movies.

I don't know what the rest of you are talking about...

This is a beautiful film. Even Keanu (sp), who can quite often lull into the Bill & Ted Acting Method, seemed to come through (particularly during the scene with his wife in the hospital). I have to say that Pacino was fantastic; right up there with his performance in Heat or Scent of a Woman. The last 30 minutes of this movie grab you by the ear-lobe and punish you for not understanding what good filming and acting are all about. Take another look at it. Fine acting and fine writing. How many of you would've chosen as he did?...I wonder :) That was the least believable part, I thought. But the bottom line: Own this Movie.

interesting and unique
3 October 1998
I have to say that this was a good film. I found, though, that I'd be sitting there watching and thinking to myself..."if I were reading this book right now, I'd be moved more by that scene...or that would seem more terrifying and surreal...". However, they did an excellent job with the atmosphere. The general consensus before the release of this film was that Cuba would outshine Williams and let me be the first to say: it did NOT happen. Robin Williams was flawless. Cuba Gooding, Jr. is never unimpressive, though, .. don't get me wrong. He was great in this movie. I just don't think it's going to earn him another Oscar. The Oscar will fall on Williams or even Sciorra for this film. They were great together. What Dreams...is well worth your time. It is a truly unique film in a sea of film redundancy.

Space: Above and Beyond (1995–1996)
excellent series

It seems that any show I feel is truly worth watching gets cancelled. So you better hope I don't start watching the shows you like! S: AAB was outstanding. Excellents writing, acting, special effects. A space-war-soap opera-type feel that just seemed to drag you in. The way I understand it, it is getting exceptional ratings on Sci-Fi Channel and if we bother them enough, they may do more shows or TV movies for S:AAB.

HOO RAH!

Tombstone (1993)
excellence
30 September 1998
A very impressive western. The cast was fabulous. I think Kurt Russell was phenomenal as well as Kilmer. Michael Bein (sp?) seemed to be the same character he always is, just with less shave and more dirt (though I like him, don't get me wrong). I wish they'd release this on VHS in letterbox format so I could finally buy it.

I got a lot more than I expected from this movie...I mean, I expected it to be good; with all those grade-A actors in there, but it turned out quite nicely I think. Travolta was outstanding. Emma Thompson was perfect. And if someone could point me in the direction of a movie that Kathy Bates was terrible in, cuz I can't believe that woman can act badly under any circumstances. The beautiful part of this movie isn't its plot or action, etc., it's the warm shroud of personality that the different characters have. Each character is annoying for whatever reason and, while at the same time, they all have a quality which you just love. It's a beautiful balance that doesn't come through in hardly any movie ever. Excellent writing. Excellent portrayals. Well worth your time to see.

ya gotta love it...

I have a friend that just despises this movie. Plot holes.. Stereotypes ... yes. Blah blah. This is a great movie. That's all there is to it. When you sit back and watch it, you are extremely entertained. It wasn't dead serious like it needed to be to achieve the Truly Great Film status. But, gawd, bravo to Emmerich and Devlin for that 9 minutes of utter destruction. That was terrifying (even though the woman, child, and dog shoulda been toast). And of course, the FX were astonishing. Come now, if Star Wars were released for the first time tomorrow, would it be as good? Take another look.... I can tear apart the Star Wars trilogy the same way my friend does ID4...but for some reason, the SW trilogy has some form of critical immunity when it comes to these issues...why? Because , like the Bible, pioneering era-marking things are never questioned for some reason or another. Hehe. Geez, I'd better stop now. It was a great movie. There ... my two cents worth.

Heat (1995)
absolutely stunning
22 September 1998
You really have to give it to Mann for this one. Impressive direction including the score and lights as mentioned above in other comments; as well as incredible portrayals by some of the greatest faces to ever be filmed. Pacino is at his best in Heat with his quiet-to-loud-in-2-seconds demeanor. "Ferocious aren't I?" That line sums up most of the characters he's played that we've loved. De Niro comes through as quite possibly one of the most beautiful characters I've ever seen written. The beauty of this film is how it blurs the line between right and wrong or good and evil or whatever you want to call it. You, as a viewer, just want it to work out for everyone, cuz you love them all. But you know it can't happen...at least, isn't that what we were taught?... Great film. Had to buy it letterboxed and watch it a few more times and steal samples from it to put on my computer! If you haven't seen it, then there's much you need to learn. If you've seen it and don't like it, there's much you need to learn. That's my two cents worth.

The Chase (1994)
interesting
22 September 1998
The movie was fairly good; could've been better had it been darker I think. The highlights come not from the plot or extreme characters, but from a couple of side-splittingly humorous events. The vomit-on-the-windshield scene and my personal favorite; when the cadavers come tumbling out of the big van all over the road right in the middle of the chase. It was like something right outta Raising Arizona (the greatest comedy ever, by the way). Anyway, there's my two cents worth. :)

Earth 2 (1994–1995)
I am still complaining about its cancellation and I won't stop till I die.

I began watching this show when it first aired and I still have not seen anything past, present, or forthcoming that could possibly compare to its intelligence. This was absolutely, positively the greatest show I've ever seen. The characters were great. The continuity was fabulous. The writing was outstanding. It hurts to know it will not return except to Sci-Fi channel for re-run airing. NBC just didn't have the guts to stick it out like Fox did with the X-Files (which did worse than E2 in its first season). Anyway, if anybody important reads this...that is, somebody with money and some pull with Universal. Here's my list of demands: 1). Bring back the show, 2). Do TV movies about it, 3). Release the season that aired on Video Tape so I can purchase decent copies. Do these things and nobody gets hurt! I have a loaded pen and/or keyboard and I'm not afraid to use it! LOL. C'mon, I'm dyin' here!

Wild Things (1998)
interesting
12 September 1998
A fairly good movie with, as stated above, lots of plot twists...for that matter, there are so many of them, that you are deceived into thinking it's predictable. What i found to be the most appealing, oddly enough, was the fact that they shot this movie with camera angles on the human body that were like what you might see in all those 80's comedy/sex movies like 'Hardbodies' etc. There were some severely beautiful women in this movie and they were filmed as if they were. And i imagine the gate swings the other way for a female viewer.

great fun

I thought is was great as well...not even close to Raising Arizona...but still good. John Goodman outdid himself in this one! He was in his element for sure. And, it's always good to see Julianne Moore (oh yes).

The Juror (1996)

The movie was entertaining...but Baldwin, too-psychotic or not, was ferocious; as he can be at times (Glengary Glenross). I like seeing him angry as he does it well.

Deep Impact (1998)
Don't even speak of Armageddon
9 August 1998
Easily one of the best disaster films i've ever seen....good characters, no testosterone one-liners during the peak event, and for the most part, believable... they did very well at showing an accurate (as far as we can imagine) depiction of how the earth would react to such a threat. Although, those two kids running up the mountain in the end....whew, they musta really broke some cross country speed records... GREAT FILM (even Star Wars has a few places where you're thinking...."i dunno bout that...")

Titanic (1997)
bravo
9 August 1998
Firstly and foremostly, I am a guy, which (in most cases) means I did not go see Titanic to see DiCaprio...although I think he can be a great actor. Reading through earlier comments, i grew a bit weary of hearing about lame script and shallow characters. I went to see a ship sink...the plot and the characters were, at least to me, a kind of icing on the Cake. I actually think a lot of the characters were done well; that is, by the time they die in freezing water, you actually felt a tinge of sadness for them. But , by the time Titanic was over, I was sufficiently moved to make me tell people that it was a great movie. Kate Winslet was good, Kathy Bates was perfect, Leo was ok (I'll give you people that - I've seen him shine like I know he can ... Basketball Diaries, Romeo & Juliet). But ultimately, the Titanic sinks...and it was absolutely stunning. Bravo to Cameron. He didn't just show us a large ship sinking, he showed us the back half of it crashing down on a hundred freezing, drowning people; he showed us a third class mother attempting to sing her children to sleep because she knew they were all doomed (broke my heart - i cried the most right there at that point), he showed people who worked extremely hard to get OUT of the bowels of the ship only to be sucked back in when a random window shattered and the water carried them on back in...detail. I like detail in a movie. Very impressive job.

very few...
2 August 1998
I gotta say, that after reading some of the comments already posted, that i 'm amazed at how many people watched this movie and proceeded to critique it for its plot, enjoyability, etc. This, like Schindler's List, I think, is a movie to be absorbed rather than just plain watched. After watching this movie, i walked around for days with a kind of 'hangover' following me around...i was extremely moved by it. When somebody asks me what i thought of it, i say 'i think of it alot'. The battle sequences were absolutely horrific - and not because of the gore so much as the terrifying realization that these people (war veterans - both deceased and still alive) did this for their country...this horrible, traumatic experience,... most were very young and weren't expecting what they got. The terror must have been unlike anything my generation will ever know. Most people today feel panic stricken when the cable goes out just before their favorite episode of (fill in the blank), c'mon people ... take a hard look at this movie! TERRIFYING. Very few movies have achieved in me what Private Ryan has.
