Saving Private Ryan (1998)
A necessary nightmare
Magnificient. Simply. And horrible, even if a movie, so close to the hell it was on these days, is not close enough to what simple young men had to suffer. A great feeling of despair and the question : why should they have to get killed? at the end of the movie. Because, in a nightmare like this, there is no good purpose to die for, even for their country, as some generals, the ass in their office, would explain. The friendship those guys shared was beyond brotherhood in this time. think about those who died. those who suffered.
but, more than anything, to those who survived and make us live. Soldiers who died deserve more than respect. They deserve a think sometimes, a sincere tear on their graves, not for what they won but for what they suffer, and they deserve a smile.
Le plaisir (et ses petits tracas) (1998)
A labyrinth?
Boukhrief, as in Kassovitz's Assassins, missed his point : the main idea could have been interesting, but he failed because of the poverty of the situations, hardly real dialogs and bad actors -except from Kassovitz-. Cassel sounds fake, settings look too lit or too unapropriated, and the story itself remains stupid. A failure.
The Avengers (1998)
What are such actors doing here?
You've seen the TV series? yes? well, then, it's easy. In a word, laughable. On the bad sense of the word. Nothing. Only Sean Connery seems to enjoy the money he got for his part. But he's doing bad too. Forget this movie. I wonder sometimes if Patrick MacNee shouldn't have been even better than this poor Ralph Fiennes. There is nothing else to say. The only intersting scene : the bears in the villain's office.
The Godfather Part II (1974)
If only ONE movie about mafia would remain...
What more to say? Puzo's book was great, but Coppola turns it into a huge fresque ; a family story. Pacino is gigantic in the part of Michael Corleone, hunted by his destiny as a goodfella. The maestria is present during the family scene, and the sacralization of violence, mixed with religious icons remain a classic part. You cannot dislike it! Probably the best movie of the Three Sequels, and the Best movie about crime, with the first version of Scarface. unmissable.
