Korine squeezes reality ang gets plenty of juice off it
18 February 2000
Human beings can be the most scary monsters of them all. Evil is everywhere and Korine knows it, he just makes it look as real as it is

Korine is a freak, someone who brings all our demons out and put them right before us and that is something we all should be thankful for

Go (1999)
10/10
Go gave me just what I wanted 103 minutes of action, lots of supermarkets and Vegas shots and beautiful people doing wild things.
11 September 1999
It's time to acknowledge for once that Pulp Fiction was a pioneer film that created a way to do movies.

With Go, Doug Liman steps on as one of the most exiting American directors as well as one of the most brilliant cinematographers of his generation.

There's simply no time -or chance- to get bored by watching Go: the action and fun is always there as you can only sit back and enjoy one of the most exiting rides of the recent American cinema.

The cast is great and continues with the tendency of using TV stars to attract new young audience to the movies. The music may be too MTV'esque but it's OK.

Something I missed on this movie was descent dialogues (SubUrbia, Trainspotting...) but I guess is just me getting a little older.

I'd give Go 10 over 10.

Bruce Lee, luscious girls, afro hairs, kicks, punches...what else can you ask for?
6 September 1999
Enter the Dragon is simply one of the coolest movies ever made for those who lived in the 70's and for those who wish they did.

The plot is quite good for a Martial Arts film but it's the way it elapses what thrills me: it all flows smoothly as Bruce Lee's majestic punches and kicks keep on hypnotizing you.

The cinematography is great but the settings really impressed me: every set in the movie is a delightful and magical places were you simply would love to be-whether sleep or awake.

Bruce Lee as well as the rest of the cast made out of this movie a Cult Movie with probably the best fighting scenes of all-time.

Fireworks (1997)
...a big movie of little words
17 July 1999
Hana-bi is a big movie of little words. Takeshi Kitano deserves recognition for every role that he has on this movie: he directed, produced, edited and stars as Yashitaka Nishi a cop who does things his way, the hard way.

Kitano combines on this movie the rawest and most brutal of the violence with the most delicate and tender human feelings. He mixes them separately on the movie but together in Nishi, a guy who does quite severe when the tough gets going and toughly tender when the tough is gone.

Visually the movie is simply a masterpiece: every single frame is a splendid image by itself, each detail is there because it belongs there; Kitano and cinematographer Hideo Yamamoto did a superb job letting the images do the job, words supposed to do.

Hana-bi is not a thrilling movie even it's about cops and mobsters, Hana-bi is an atmospheric and moody movie were you'll simply witness a tough story about a tough man who has as much from tough as from man.

Hard Eight (1996)
10/10
If you liked Boogie nights then see it again because Hard eight has nothing to do with it for good.
23 April 1999
I had two big reasons to see this movie the first one was Philip Baker Hall, when I saw him playing Bookman on Seinfeld I said to myself "This guy is the man". The other reason was Paul Thomas Anderson I did like Boogie nights a lot and I wanted to see previous movies from him and Hard eight looked just great.

If you liked Boogie nights then see it again because Hard eight has nothing to do with it for good. Hard eight is a slow movie and there's not too many things happening on it though. Even so, there's a well-created atmosphere and some very amusing characters that made of Hard eight a tremendous movie. I can't have enough Philip Baker Hall he's a magnificent actor and it seems Sidney's role were made just for him; He's tough but pretty gentle at the same time, he's disturbed and quiet but he seems able to manage any situation no matter how difficult it can be. Sidney is a big reason not to considerate this movie as a slow David Mamet movie-wanna-be but a great movie about a very particular man and the though way he deals with life under the shinning neon lights of Reno.

The rest of the cast is superb Boogie nights' John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson.

I would give it a 9,3.

The landmark of colombian cinema.
10 April 1999
This movie will keep your eyes open and your head confused. The superb cinematography and the slow and heavy way the film elapses, gives to violence a weird sleepy edge.

You won't shout, you won't scream because you'll feel too desolated and scared to do it.
27 February 1999
How scary a movie can be? Carnival of souls is scary as no other movie is by one simply reason, this film won't only frighten you to death but also will lead you to a desolation state: You won't shout, you won't scream because you'll feel too desolated and scared to do it. The plot happens to be superb: I love it when the whole plot starts making sense by the very end.

Candace Hilligoss play Mary Henry the lead role; the character is great and her performance is magnificent, she just gives the movie a vulnerable element that sometimes turns to be dark and mysterious.

Carnival of Souls became a cult film with plenty of honors; it's not only one of the most scary movies ever but also is a masterpiece of moviemaking.

Suicide Kings (1997)
...the movie does great through most of the 106 minutes.
19 February 1999
There's a point in this movie when you would say `This is one of the greatest movies I have seen', actually the movie does great through most of the 106 minutes.

The cast is simply great: The eternal classy and diabolic Mafia boss Christopher Walken, the funny but rough Denis Leary, and a great cast of kids leaded by Jay Mohr - an actor that does keep on improving movie after movie.

The story could have been perfect but it gets a little too complex at the end. An intricate and intriguing plot might be a good thing but you need a very intelligent story and sadly, this one needed more thought given, particularly at the outcome, which certainly disappoints after a tremendous three quarters of the movie.

The movie is great, otherwise a non-that-great end wouldn't mind and as I said, in some points Suicide Kings is a masterpiece, but there wasn't a Keyser Soze there to save the outcome.

...an endless chase that keeps you awake all through the movie.
21 January 1999
Rhythm is the key of this superb movie, the elapse is basically an endless chase that keeps you awake all through the movie. Besides the whole atmosphere is very cool the decadence of the junkie world has a glamour of its own, mostly when it's magnificent represented by Tim Roth (the acid James Cagney) and Tupac Shakur who really shows us his acting skills here. You gonna love him. The movie is basically perfect in the sense there's nothing to criticize: On every single aspect the movie is magnificent.

Vondie Curtis-Hall simply couldn't make a better debut as a director.

Jackie Brown (1997)
10/10
(On Pam Grier) she's Jackie just like George C. Scott was Patton and Marlon Brando was Vito Corleone
8 December 1998
I read some about Jackie Brown before I get to see it so I didn't get surprised either for the minimum volume of explicit violence or the smooth kind of movie I was going to see.

J.B. is certainly beyond the expected: It is a clean and a very intelligent film where the perfectly portrayed atmosphere and the so amazingly conceived and interpreted characters just let the story flows clean and steady on an enchanting smooth rhythm.

Jackie Brown a flight assistant which is masterly interpreted by the former 70's black exploitation diva Pam Grier and, as it is obvious, happens to be the centre of a story were as usual everyone wants a piece of the cake but one. I can't think of other actress to play Jackie Brown, I would bet Tarantino conceived her picturing Pam playing her, she's just great she's Jackie just like George C. Scott was Patton and Marlon Brando was Vito Corleone. No further comments needed.

Other character that happens to be essential is Max Cherry superbly performed by Robert Forster. Max is the rhythm of the movie himself: Being just smooth and equilibrated he keeps the movie on an even but always thrilling elapse.

The atmosphere: a very 70s LA couldn't be better sketched: Jackie's apartment, Max' office and the steak house where Jackie and Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson) have Piña coladas and Screwdrivers are simply amazing you just feel like if you have been there.

That's more or less all I have to say about this picture which in my concept is simply one of the greatest movies ever.

I also find remarkable the Robert De Niro role as Louis Gara an ex con who add the fun touch to the movie.

Swingers (1996)
10/10
There's movies that touches you and there's Swingers that gives you a big hug just like the ones your best friend gives you when the both of you are drunk.
8 December 1998
Swingers portraits life itself ...at least as it is for five guys that get to taste the non-always sweet but mostly fun flavour of the nightlife.

The conversations and some particular quotes make out of Swingers a Bible for many of us where is written almost every passage of our life. The story is fine but it's the way it has been told what makes this movie the classic it has become into. The characters are good but the core of the movie is the fantastic duo composed by the cool and cheering up Trent (Vince Vaughn) and the always depressed and recently dumped Mike (John Favreau) both opposite poles that couldn't match better.

The laughing never stops but they are moments where actually you don't know if laughing is the right thing to do because the movie features really unpleasant situations portrayed in a very realistic and sometimes raw way.

The movie got style the story's rhythm is fantastically taken but it is what they do and say what makes of Swingers...so money!
