Bob Marley: One Love (2024)
Difficult to understand thanks to sacredness of Patois
I had seen the trailers for this movie for a few months and so finally went to see it before it left theaters. Now I wish I had waited for the movie be streamed. Why? Because I had trouble understanding the English dialect of Patois for most of the movie.
I know the creators held Patois to be sacred but if this were a Japanese or French foreign language film, there would be subtitles.
And I felt the creators were disingenuous because the English spoken in the trailers was much clearer than what was being spoken in the actual movie.
I grew up during this time but was not familiar with the Bob Marley story and message, with high expectations that were not met because I couldn't understand.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Joel is such a whimp
I didn't want to use the word p**** in the subject. I am only 40 minutes into this terrible movie and I'm not sure I'll finish it.
Whatever happened to the Darwin awards?
Tooth Fairy (2010)
A mishmash of great ingredients that comes out tasting horribly
What do you get if you put together lasagna, peanut butter, sautéed onions, and sugar? Well, that's how I reacted to this movie.
I thought surely with this acting ensemble it has to be reasonably entertaining movie, right? I mean Dwayne Johnson? I enjoyed him in "The Scorpion King", "Walking Tall", even "Race to Witch Mountain".
I've been in love with Julie Andrews since I was child with "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music". (and yes, S.O.B.) Ashley Judd is so versatile. I've loved her since she acted organismic in STNG's "The Game" -- she was so cute and hot! And Billy Crystal, uncredited?? When I realized it was him, I had visions of his role in "The Princess Bride" all over again.
So if the acting ingredients are superb each in their own way, it has to be the cooks in the kitchen who screwed it up, right? This movie is silly and contrived and I have to believe that each actor grimaced when they saw the final version. The concept of dreaming and imagination had possibilities, but this movie did not capture it.
My kids could barely tolerate it, nor could I. I feel sorry for all involved.
The Pistol: The Birth of a Legend (1991)
The Omega Code of Sports Movies
I mention the Omega Code because it is my personal benchmark of bad movies promoted by Christian ministries (i.e. Paul & Jan Crouch of TBN).
I had never heard of this movie until recently receiving a promotional e-mail from the American Family Association (Don Wildmon), which by the way, had bad (404) links anyway.
With the NBA finals going on, I decided to rent it from NetFlix. I have to agree with most of the comments from the last two posters and disagree with most of the comments from other admirers who must be suffering from 1 Corinthians 13:12 ('seeing dimly').
The film was a big disappointment. The acting, writing, and more importantly -- the directing, was some of the worst I have seen. I had hoped to see a true biography of Maravich's life and accomplishments -- not a snapshot of one year (8th grade) in his life.
Certainly none of the content is offensive in the movie (unless you consider 'butthead' vulgar), and if your child is involved in PIP and/or Upward Basketball, you'll recognize many of the drills.
Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
The best Star Trek movie ever.
The best Star Trek movie ever -- dethroning "The Wrath of Kahn" as our favorite. It embodied the essence of Star Trek and wove the best characteristics; action, humor, romance, integrity, and special effects into one great movie. No characters were short-changed. We will see it again!
