All the Queen's Men (2001)
Period action-comedy with heart is worth consideration.
This movie is actually quite entertaining, despite what can be read as a silly premise. It also boasts spectacular performances from Eddie Izzard as Tony and David Birkin as Johnno. Matt LeBlanc, in another big screen attempt, does admirably at not playing dumb, and is suprisingly effective as a hero.
Malcolm in the Middle (2000)
Weird, but actually funny
"Malcolm in the Middle" is an outlandish show about an elementary school kid, his odd family, and uncomfortable school life. In the first episode, Malcolm is IQ tested and put into the gifted program at his school, causing more problems with his school situation. It was surprisingly funny. I don't usually watch shows about kids this young, but this one actually seems worth it.
American Beauty (1999)
So good, it's almost unbearable
I had to wait until this movie's second week of wide release to see it, and now I can't imagine how I managed. When my friends ask me "so what is that movie about, anyway?", the clumsily adoring answer I give them scares them a bit. It is very hard to put this movie into a neat little box, as can be done with so many others. I was so impressed with _all_ the actors in this movie. I went in with my intrinsic dislike of Anette Bening, and was completely blown away. I excuse her for her performance in The Grifters. Kevin Spacey was amazing. I loved him before, now...worship? Thora Birch and Wes Bently were also wonderful. Chris Cooper was superbly horrifying.
After I saw this movie, for almost ten minutes, I was practically unable to speak. It effectively drags up so many emotions that it was impossible to pick one. In short, I loved this movie, perhaps more than any other. Gotta see it again.
Freaks and Geeks (1999)
Great, original, true. Watch it get canceled.
I was born in 1980, but I appreciate this show much more than laughable crap like Dawson's Creek. I think NBC showed some rare good judgment when they picked this show up. My biggest worry is that none of the "Dawson's" set will watch it, it will flounder for ratings, and that this good thing will come to an end. Try to prove me wrong, Okay?
Can't Hardly Wait (1998)
Can't Hardly... Doesn't Rate.
I saw this movie only recently and was struck by a)Its lack of coherent plot, and b)Jennifer Love Hewitt's failure to act. This movie fell short in so many ways. Maybe it was a better movie before they edited chunks out of the original screenplay to bring the rating down from R to PG-13. I also balked at its cruel treatment of X-Files fans. _Can't Hardly Wait_ is full of teenybopper fluff, but it's not even quality fluff.
