Far from inspired
7 November 2017
This is so bad to there was one point at which I thought it was a comedy! People in the cast appeared to be walking aimlessly around in circles, about five horses walked past the camera on a number of occasions. Where on Earth all these people were walking to is a mystery given that they simply appeared to be circling around some ruins. The plot is basically the biblical story that takes up just a few verses in the Bible. It is however strung out for so long, so amateurishly and with such poor production quality that it becomes almost laughable.

Hilarious
13 March 2016
This was not the usual Sasha Baron Cohen film in that it has an element of sentimentality although wrapped in outrageously hilarious humour. It is essentially a spy spoof with a few gross out moments. Hilariously funny for those with a reasonably broad mind.

For me. an interesting aspect to the film was the way in which a number of characters from Grimsby matched against the suave characters of international intrigue. I don't want to read too much into the film because ultimately it is a belly laugh, but before anyone looks down on people that they recognise in the Grimsby caricatures, I think that they had an honesty and straightforwardness that were not found in the high minded glyphs represented the international elite.

A well developed movie for adults and kids
24 June 2012
Every so often I watch a film with limited enthusiasm, simply because I have time me to kill. On these occasions I sometimes stumble across a true delight and am pleasantly surprised...a film that maybe had "mixed" reviews or that received little attention upon its release. Megamind is such a film; a great work of animation and character development.

The film should delight adults and children with enough in it to satisfy all tastes. There is also plenty of amusing and hilarious satire with regard to superhero movies and super villains.

Many superheros and villains are often depicted as wholly good or wholly bad, having at best some traumatic event setting them on their inevitable and unchangeable course. This film actually highlights certain sources of inner turmoil and insecurities of the characters in a very entertaining way and develops the characters as they work these out.

There's also plenty of rip roaring action on the way.

Great stuff! Highly recommended!

Excellent and well crafted

Warning: Spoilers
A well executed film. A trip to Sainsbury's will never be the same again! The film provides a few minutes of amusement and is very well crafted. It's impossible to comment on such a short film without giving away spoilers but give the film a go. It will probably put a smile on your face.

Aside from the compact nature of the piece, the acting and camera work are first class. The mise en scene is constructed well and the musical score finishes the whole thing off in an upbeat fashion.

I consider that the film has an impact that could last long beyond the viewing. A few moments in time but moments that create a smile. No bad thing in these tense days.

As pointless as the remake of Psycho
13 July 2006
I am not someone who always balks at remakes, provided that they add something that the original did not have. Sadly this version of The Omen is about as pointless as the remake of Psycho. Nothing is added and nothing is reinterpreted as far as I can see.

If anything, this version is somewhat tedious & plodding, possibly because the story is familiar. Some people will probably find the actor for Damien more suited to a sentimental comedy than an horror film (although this is certainly no criticism of him).

It may well be that anyone who is not familiar with the 1976 version will enjoy this one but, for me, I will not be scrambling to buy it, rent it or watch it on satellite TV.

No Story, No Characters and No Plot
28 August 2004
I found this to be an absolutely dreadful film.

True it has plenty of "special" effects but none are particularly original. As for the story ...it is so minimal as to be almost non-existent. The acting is wooden and the characters are no more than cyphers. Some of the actors delivery is so slow I wonder whether it is intentional to enable them to remember their lines rather than to fit the mood of the film!!

I cannot think how Judie Dench found her way into the film. Although she has a relatively small part and, by the films standards, a well acted one, she would have been better leaving it alone. Maybe she wandered in off a backlot during a lunchbreak & thought "what the heck"!!

Well, its only my opinion ,but it's a turkey in every department.

Oh my goodness me!!
4 May 2003
Oh Dear! Goodness Me! Zounds! What a mess! What a sorry mess!

I have not read the book but the story splatters across the celluloid like the characters and creatures splatter across the snowbound terrain. After a promising start with the potential of an interesting premise the film starts to wander around all over the place. There again it was difficult to concentrate because from time to time I became distracted by members of the audience leaving the cinema, admittedly not in floods, but in a definite trickle. Personally, as with all films, I stuck it out to the bitter end but would probably have had more fun staying at home & eating my own flesh!

Sheesh!
16 November 2002
Although the film contained a few belly laughs I can't say that I enjoyed it. As the film progressed the routines became cliched and predictable and it frankly became a strain to watch. Some people may like it but it just wasn't "my bag".

Very Effective
14 November 2002
This was a very effective film. I found it in some way disturbing & inscrutable rather than enjoyable and I still find myself thinking the symbology and ideas through, no doubt coming to some conclusions that the scriptwriter did not intend. That's what, for me, made the film worthwhile. It is a work of art that one can think about long after the final credits.

Nostalgic Romp.
21 July 2002
This is an excellent nostalgic romp of a film. It captures the feel of the cartoon version with just a few differences. (e.g. The initial splitting up of the gang - such disagreements never surfaced in the film). The storyline isn't too bad either although it has an actual "supernatural" foundation rather than "Mr Smith in a mask".

From a purely nostalgic point of view I was very sorry to see the briefish appearance of Scrappy Doo towards the end. I think that he spoilt the cartoon version. Part of Scoobys charm is his ill formed English. If a dog could talk that is how it should be. However, Scrappy is too articulate and ruins the show. keep scrappy out.

Cliche Ridden Rubbish
5 March 2002
My goodness me!! What a waste of celluloid. This is the most cliche ridden disaster movie of all time. (Apart from Airplane where the cliches are intentional - and are used to hilarious effect). "Rough Air...." is sooooo predictable. All the usual two dimensional characters are there.. The pilot with a "history", the cabin attendant who is an old love interest, the criminal and his police escort etc. etc.

If you fancy yourself as a clairvoyant watch this...it will give you bags of confidence in the art of prediction. Otherwise forget it.

Haunting - not a film but an experience.
4 November 2001
This is truly great. The horror relies on suspense rather than the stalk and slash material that has invaded the screens for the last twenty or so years. The film develops slowly and is much the better for that.

I found that I appreciated this more by reflecting upon it afterwards. It was not simply a movie but an experience. Our experience of the events remains with the characters and develops with them to the ultimate revelation. I felt that the film had a claustraphobic feel to it and I did not like this at first but if anyone feels this I would urge them to stick with it because it is vital to the outcome.

Also one of Nicole Kidmans best performances.

An Historical Document.
7 May 2001
To put it simply, I enjoyed this film. The reason for my interest & enjoyment was not related to anything other than the subject matter itself. I had heard tales from my mother and grandmother about how Northern England working class life and attitudes used to be (as experienced by them)and this is an interesting depiction that seems to faithfully represent what they told me. In particular, the paternalistic but overbearing father who "knows" what is best for his family along with his stubborness when this paradigm is challenged. (Not much has changed there then!!)

People who have seen the play will probably be disappointed with the film because the story does not easily transfer across the different media. In a sense however, the film is an historical document and I personally enjoyed it, if only because of the way it conveyed a social phenomenon.

Excellent - more than just a sports film
6 May 2001
The film is, by and large, absorbing. It is not simply a film about football although it is similar in some ways to the comic strip "Billy's Boots" that was in a now defunct football comic called the Scorcher.

It does however, go beyond this. It becomes clear that the boots themselves have no inherent power but simply act as a mental focus for the title character. Jimmys life in general is pretty grim and his football dreams provide something of a release. The film in this way provides an element of social commentary.

The only slight fault is one that occurs in most films about football (soccer)and that is the depiction of the game itself. How does one choreograph a football game? Passes, shots and even fouls seem artificial. Sometimes, as for example in "When Saturday Comes", actual game footage is spliced in, albeit not very well at others it is simply staged. This film appears to leave it all to choreography. I have yet to see a soccer film with a satisfactory depiction of the actual match action.

This is however, a relatively small matter in the context of the film. All in all it is an absorbing film and something of a modern day fairytale.

Nothing More Than Average
4 May 2001
I found this film to be a little bit of a let down. There was little screen chemistry between Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts (although admittedly they did not appear together for much of the time) and the premise of the movie was a little weak. In addition to this, I could not find a sympathetic character among the cast (except maybe Julia Roberts abductor).

This is probably a movie to watch if there's nothing else worth seeing at the multiplex.

First Class

An absolutely excellent film that is wonderfully photographed and well acted. The charming story is a great antidote to bigotry, be it religious or otherwise.

The stranger & her daughter come into town and transform the narrow minded folk who shy away from living, into people who embrace life; people who transform their faith. There is nothing new in this theme but oh how delightfully it is done. One to be savoured like the Chocolat. Enjoy.

Yawwwnnn !!
24 February 2001
Personally speaking I found the film very ponderous. The slow dark atmosphere is intended to reflect the subject matter and, no doubt, many people will feel that it is superb. Well that is their choice.

A warning to all cinema goers. Even if you are expecting some sort of gore fest I doubt that many will fail to squirm at the final scenes of the film. Very unpleasant.

A Good TV Movie.
22 November 2000
This is pretty much a pleasant - albeit unspectacular - film. It is very watchable with a predictable fantasy theme running through it.

The theme of people realising that they are at some sort of halfway house between Heaven and Hell, awaiting divine judgement, is not new and has been well portrayed in earlier films. This film however, reworks the formula in a western setting. It is certainly watchable and is quite well made for a TV movie.

One Hell of a Movie
11 November 2000
This has to be one of the better remakes of previous "classics". Elizabeth Hurley and Brendan Frazer seem to have brought a different perspective to the story although Peter Cooke and Dudley Moore were superb in the original.

It seems that much of humanity finds the faustian theme to be fascinating regardless as to whether it is depicted gothically or humorously. This film plays with that fascination and implies the clichéd admonition to "be careful what you wish for because you might just get it".

Hurley competently plays an alluring Devil and Brendan Frazer, at the outset, makes an excellent simple character - a type he played so well in Blast from the Past. His talents are however, given great scope with a string of characters that make up his various incarnations.

The film ends in a fairly mushy way which may be a turn off for some people but overall I think that this is a mildly enjoyable way to spend some cinema time.

Not bad really!
5 November 2000
I very nearly gave this movie a miss. I was one of the people who found The Blair Witch Project a turn off and, as such, I had no desire to go through it all again. I suspect therefore, that Blair Witch 2 will get a number poor reviews because many people seeing it are fans of the original and,if they expect more of the same, disappointment will follow.

This movie differs from the original. It is cleverly crafted and some of the confusion of the characters is transferred to the audience in a much more effective and professional manner than BW1. If you were put off by BW1 the "sequel" may still be worth looking at. Its not a great movie but is certainly not as bad as I expected.

Mildly amusing but a little too long for the material.
17 September 2000
The idea behind the film is an amusing one and has some mileage. There are some amusing moments in the unlikely portrayal of a priest and rabbi falling for the same woman.

One of the funniest moments of the film is the point where Rabbi Schram and Father Finn have a confrontation in front of Schrams congregation. This is a rare "belly laugh" most of the humour is milder than this moment.

Having said all this however, there is about 90 Mins of good material but, alas, the film lasts for 129. It does tend to drag along in places.

Dated
11 August 2000
The film has not lasted the test of time. The whole thing was boring but occasionally punctuated by some interesting fleeting seconds.

The best part of the film was the opening sequence when Shaft casually walks across the New York road avoiding cars.....a few moments of good timing.

It does perhaps have a modicum of interest for its historical or social value.

Not quiet right
3 June 2000
I didn't find the film to be as bad as I expected but this may simply be because I had lowered my expectations so much as a result of the bad reviews that anything would be an improvement.

I felt that the film made a promising start indicating an interesting, although not original, plot about a defeated humanity fighting back against alien invaders. It then seemed to lose its way.

The Psychlos look like derivatives of the klingons and John Travolta seems to overact. The manner in which the humans gain knowledge, the utter stupidity of the Psychlos in giving them that knowledge and the amazing way in which ancient aircraft were still airworthy (among other things) raises questions about the film.

Having said all of this, I repeat that I didn't find it quiet as bad as I was led to expect. I still however, regard it as one of the misses of the year.

Clever
19 May 2000
This is a clever film. The special effects are impressive considering the year in which the film was produced and the acting is very competent. With the exception of the operating theater scene the "freeze frames" are first class.

The first fifteen minutes or so could be a short play in its own right, and this gets the film off to an excellent start by setting the scene. The storyline is strong and very well thought out and , at the end of it all, the viewer must question .....did he imagine it all, or did it really happen?

Dooohhh! My Bwainn Hurrrts! Well it certainly does after this endurance test of a film. How on earth I managed to keep going without hitting the fast forward button lord only knows.

Maybe it's me!!Maybe I don't get the premise of the film... or maybe I don't appreciate it's alleged mystical atmosphere. In my humble opinion though the film has about as much mystical atmosphere as a trip to McDonalds.

In addition the characters were all dreadful and there is more character development in a Tom & Jerry cartoon. Yaarrrghhh! Why do I do it? why do I watch such tripe? It's enough to make one run away and join a monastery or the Foreign Legion!! YAARGH!! An absolutley dreadful film in just about every respect. Apart from that it's not to bad.
