Affliction (1997)
Anyone who writes a negative review didn't listen to the last two minutes.
21 February 1999
Before going out to see this much-praised movie I thought I'd check out the IMDB comments. It gave me pause to see so many negatives. Uh-oh. Is this another flick that critics are afraid NOT to like?

Wife and I went anyway. I kept looking at my watch throughout. I'm thinking this is waaaay overwritten. How could all these disasters happen to Nick Nolte in such a short time. This is silly, think I.

Then we get to last two minutes, when Willem Dafoe tells us what we just saw. In the first 30 seconds my wife and I agreed the words were chilling. In the next 90 seconds we realized the movie was brilliant.

Any negative critiques you see in IMDB were written by nattering nabobs of negativism who just didn't understand Dafoe's words OR they must have left early.

See the movie. Listen to the words. It's goosepimply clever.

All you need to see is Kirstie Alley as a shrink
20 January 1999
Woody Allen movies in recent years have not been up to the 70s and 80s, but my wife and I know there are always at least a few good lines. On a cabin-fever northern January night we tried "Deconstructing Harry" for a few good lines.

It has MANY good lines, but if you don't have time to wade through the bizarre storyline or accept Woody Allen writing himself into his movies as lover to young babes.....just go in about an hour and watch Kirstie Alley rant and rave as his wife. You don't have to watch anything else, and you'll NEVER forget her five minutes of shrill vituperation. Screamingly funny!

Kingpin (1996)
This is a screaming laugher
6 November 1998
Sitting around with nothing better to do, my wife and I thought we'd give a 1 1/2 star Woody Harrelson movie a chance. Terrible reviews. No one saw it. No one heard of it.

In the first half hour we were in pain from laughing so hard. Only people who saw it will understand the following: "I milked the cow. She sure was hard to warm up." It took me 15 minutes to recover from the next few seconds of punchline. I had to roll off the couch and get down on the floor before I FELL on the floor.

There are about 15 BIG laughs and maybe 30 smaller ones.

I went into IMBD the next day to read what real people (not critics) had to say. Critics didn't like "Ferris Bueller" or "Airplane" either. IMBD clued me that this was made by the same guys who did "Dumb & Dumber" and "There's Something about Mary." If those two screamers aren't to your taste, you'll be with the critics on "Kingpin." Comedy works differently for different people.

Full of truly original humor. RUN don't walk to rent it. I have 1153 movies on tape and am kicking myself for not taping this for visitors who ask me to show them something they may have missed.
