Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999 TV Movie)

Turner finally makes a good one!
21 June 1999
If you didn't see premiere night -- kick yourself now.

I'm very pleased to see a TNT original that was not related to the Old West. This movie was an outstanding TV movie and I haven't seen a good one in a number of years.

A. Michael Hall was excellent in the role of Bill Gates. Good acting is when you forget who the person playing the part is. (Luke Perry in 8 Seconds and Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski are the only others where I didn't think of the previous projects the actors did) You forget A. Michael Hall was in the countless John Hughes' films from the 80's.

Noah Wylie's performance was good; however, I saw a few hints of Dr. John Carter coming through.

The story was inviting. I liked the movement of the film and enjoyed the narration throughout which made great transitions. They focused on the personal life of Steve Jobs and not on Bill Gates. There was a balance problem. Too much Steve, not enough Bill.

I know nothing of the history of personal computers and, as an English major in college, learned a great deal of background information on the PC. You will learn and be entertained from this movie and be surprised of how the PC transformed into a world commodity. I'd rather watch this than a six-hour documentary any day.

Maude (1972–1978)
The sitcom for every generation of women
1 June 1999
I love Bea Arthur and this show is the only one that tops "The Golden Girls." The show was controversial, but greatly written, and carried it off with fantastic acting! Norman Lear is a television dynasty within himself. I wish I could have been old enough in the seventies to appreciate the first run of these episodes...however, I can deal with the re-runs just fine!

Absolute Perfection!
17 April 1999
If you want to see a beautifully directed movie, outstanding acting, and an intense plot (that really says something!) then see "American History X" immediately. You will not be disappointed. This movie resurged my liberal views and will not be passive about other people's hate. Not only did this movie tell the inside story of militant white supremacist groups in America, but it showed the destruction of a blue-collar white family due to the Neo-Nazi organization. Edward Norton's performance was impeccable, best to date. I would have liked to see him receive the Best Actor oscar. Other honorable acting: Edward Furlong, Fairuza Balk and, yes, Beverly D'Angelo.

Pure excellence!
12 January 1999
I have been waiting to see this film ever since I saw Paltrow on Leno. She briefly described the premise of the film and from the clip shown I knew I had to see this immediately! After a month and a half I saw it opening day of all theatres and I was afraid my expectations would be too high. Well, the film is everything I expected and more!

The review of Vernon Shure says it all. The performances are spectacular by all characters (it is a pleasure to see Paltrow, a mainstream actress, can speak in iambic pentameter beautifully instead of the not-so-great performance of Leonardo Dicaprio in the "MTV version" of Romeo & Juliet). This film is a must for all English majors and would even recommend this for high school students to show that William Shakespeare was a young man with mortal emotions and feelings and not some untouchable old man who liked to "confuse" people with his style of writing.

I'll sum it up by recalling Vernon Shure's opinion...it is a great thrill to see a movie with substance while entertaining at the same time!

Bean (1997)
Very disappointing!
7 December 1998
When I saw the trailer for "Bean" I was in much anticipation but it was wasted energy. Everything in the movie was taken from the TV show which is a lot more funny. The dialogue in the movie through me off. I'm so used to seeing the TV show which is in almost complete silence. I felt they Americanized Mr. Bean and did a poor job. I think Hollywood must think the American public is stupid. They insinuate we need a plot other than Rowan Atkinson's hilarious antics and adventures. The plot of the American family was pathetic and extremely disappointing. Like others said before...forget the movie, watch the TV shows.

Excellent Movie
7 December 1998
I hate to give a cliche but this film gave me an optimistic insight to what heaven will be like. Just to look back on your life like a movie would be the ultimate nostalgia (the idea of eating anything you want without gaining weight is nice too). Rip Torn gives another comical performance but Albert Brooks, like always, makes this movie entertaining and fun to watch. This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I recommend it highly.

Christmas isn't complete without it!
7 December 1998
The most delightful Christmas movie ever! I'm so envious of all the commentators that say they watch it with their families. Nobody in my family, including my husband, enjoys the movie as much as I do. My brother and I are the only ones who love this movie (he lives in Florida now so I have no one to share the laughter with me). I HOPE TNT runs "A Christmas Story" marathon again this year; it was so great! Think about it...if you like this movie and there wasn't anything good on the other channels you could always rely on "A Christmas Story."

Armageddon (1998)
Two words: Pa-thetic!
6 December 1998
I really can't stand any more Jerry Bruckheimer films. However, I heard "The Rock" was good, but fortunately I won't see it due to Don Simpson, co-producer. I saw "Con-Air"...good plot but it was cold, lacking something. "Armageddon" is ten-times worse. Great cast collaboration but it lacks something as well...uh, a plot? I can't blame Bruckheimer he really packs in the non-intelligent and strips them $7.50 just for them to say, "Whoa...cool effects!" Is Bruckheimer trying to pull a Coen brothers by putting in Steve Buscemi? Sorry, Jer, it doesn't work like that.

One word. Outstanding.
6 December 1998
Now, I see what everybody was talking about. It took me 4 years to see this, in my opinion, masterpiece. If you have not seen this movie rent it anyway you can. The performances delivered by Robbins and Freeman are, to me, the pinnacle of both their careers. This film cannot help but evoke tactile imagery to the fullest capacity. You feel what the main characters are going through the sensation is uncanny. Robbins (Andy) and Freeman ("Red") are a balance of the human spirit. Andy is your freedom-seeking hope side and "Red" is your rational, pessimistic counterpart. Find your equilibrium in "The Shawshank Redemption."
