So bored admittedly I half watched it

Tried to be game of thrones but with a short film you don't really get the back story or invest in the characters.

Unbelievable
1 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I thought the first season was great, probably as it is so well based on the book... But this first episode doesn't make sense. Spoiler: why would you even consider killing off your most valuable resource? I know the society is harsh but usually there is some sort of logic to the punishment.

Not like the book
7 October 2019
If you like the book, don't bother. They've changed characters, cut characters out, changed plot.... and to me, it doesn't capture the story. I realise there's a lot to fit in a 2 hour film, but it's totally changed the point.

Unsure on audience
22 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure who Disney were aiming this film at. It's quite long for children, a bit creepy (I know kids cope with more than you think!) and contains very mixed moral messages. For example, they talk about not getting revenge on a character, have a whole song about it, and then carry on with plans to kill another character after a comment that "it doesn't feel right", which is brushed aside, saying that mothers don't know everything! For adults, there are some very funny bits but then some dull bits where a song has just been stuffed in to try and make a moral point (we're better together, no one is alone). I've never seen the show it's based on so can't comment on whether this is just the original script. Johnny Depp as the wolf was very creepy and I can't believe the wolf's song is allowed! Overall, I enjoyed it (for some of the humorous moments mentioned) but wouldn't rush to see it again.

predictable with the occasional good bit
23 August 1999
Occasionally I really did laugh out loud but this film doesn't touch "Notting Hill". It was the Welsh flatmate which really made "Notting Hill" for me and there were no equivalent characters in this film. If you like Hugh Grant's films however, you'll probably love this.

Most of the jokes in "Mickey Blue Eyes" were just so predictable I found them boring when they did occur. There were some good moments and I would see this film if you get chance (I had free tickets) but don't fork out more than a few quid.

Overall: 6/10

not up to top animation standard
23 August 1999
I saw this animation as I collect penguins and there were some cute pictures with a _little_ factual information in the story, but the dialog and songs did not live up to the high standard of classic Disney films. The little plot seemed too simplistic and obviously going to end happily-ever-after. There was none of the suspense caused by a good score and life-or-death situations with last minute saves which characterize good fairytales.

Overall: 5/10 - passes the time, just

some great lines but a little slow
17 August 1999
There are some great lines in "Playing by Heart" and it's a good look at life and love. However, it did seem to drag at times, especially once I had figured out how it was all going to tie together from the clues provided throughout the film.

I was a little disappointed with the ending : I would have preferred something more open-ended and/or not necessarily so complete and expected. But then the enjoyment of this film is not in the conclusion but how it's reached.

Overall I gave it 7/10 - worth seeing but don't rush.

Lousy script and Mediocre Action
5 July 1999
There were a few good points in the film (like the start when the painting is stolen) and these managed to stop me falling sleep by the end, but overall this was the worst film I've seen recently. Catherine Zeta-Jones can't act and had a lousy script. Sean Connery had all the best lines (as there were) and saved the film somewhat. The plot twists could have been made so much better. Connery is definitely too old for this role - he could easily have been Catherine's grandfather rather than her lover!

Save your £5 and wait till it shows on TV and there is nothing else on.

Interesting, but some lousy acting.
29 June 1999
I enjoyed this film although the script and interactions between characters often let it down. I really wanted Nick to succeed as it seems like the sort of thing that could happen to anyone - you start out with ambition, make a mistake, try to cover it and things just spiral out of your control. A lesson for us all.

The most plastic relationship was that between Nick and his wife Lisa but other characters from the bank also appeared very stereotyped. Nick's personal thoughts kept the whole thing going though.

Overall, this film kept me interested but could have been much more.

Best comedy for ages.
15 June 1999
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I hardly stopped laughing throughout. Some might complain about the ending but I think it fitted in with the story about a Hollywood actress. The best character for me was not the major stars but Spike, whose "different" view on life will remind many of past flatmates. Although unbelievable in some places (could a major star really wander round Notting Hill without being spotted and where were the tramps in the park?!), this is a wonderful feel-good movie.

interesting film, shame about the ending
9 June 1999
Ok, so it had to have what I call a typical "Hollywood" ending in a way, but the story itself was interesting.

It might seem unbelievable but you can't say circumstances wouldn't conspire such that you would do something desperate.

Taking a look at the daker side of human nature, don't expect a bundle of laughs although those with a slightly twisted sense of humour will find some lines funny.

repetetive tiresome jokes but lots of action
18 May 1999
I know it's an action film but it would help if there was a vague plot, rather than just one long drawn-out joke about muddling twins. yes, the fights are good but the rest of the film is just rubbish, esp. compared to "Rush Hour".

the worst Jackie Chan I've seen to date.

Not just another comedy
24 February 1999
I went because I heard this was a great comedy, but it was more than that. The comic lines are great but don't expect a laugh a minute. You are shown a window into a few characters' hopes, fears and desires.

Each character can not only be kind but are often selfish - all are well-represented human beings, not just stereotypes.

Overall, I don't think this will be as huge a success as some other recent films, but it is well worth a look.

some good points but way too long
29 January 1999
Overall I agreed with many of the reviews I have read - this film was way too long. Maybe the directors were trying to get across some deep and meaningful thoughts which required length, but the plot and stereotypical characters ruined any effect for me.

William Parrish is a successful, popular, clever guy who everyone likes and so in Hollywood style, has to be about to see his life's work destroyed by some young hot-shot. Of course, he's not quite perfect, preferring his younger, intelligent and fairly pretty daughter over her sister. For me, the best character was the Jamaican woman although she only appears briefly.

Death taking over a human body was interesting to watch and Brad Pitt did do well in this role, giving Death the appearance of knowing language but learning to control a human body. Maybe the thought of Death being human with human emotions just unnerves me a little, but a Death which learns to be a

good guy whilst on earth and fall in love just doesn't seem real to me. And if Death exists outside of time, why worry about taking Susan Parrish with him - she'll be dead herself in the blink of an eyelid?

Verdict: save your 5 quid (and back from those cinema seats) and rent this on video when there's nothing on tele. Or even save that and wait for it to be shown on TV. This also has the advantage of the bathroom being close by!

cliched but fun
22 December 1998
The plot (what little there is) is not exactly original but the action scenes are fast paced and the dialog often sparkles. Overall, it was a good laugh if you leave your brain at home!
