Yesterday (2019)
Silly Love Movie
This movie is obviously inspired by the Beatles but unfortunately it turns into a McCartney-like Silly Love Song, only in movie form. The premise of the movie is very promising - a fledgling musician ends up being the only person who remembers the Beatles after a freak event/accident. Unfortunately, it turns into a cliched romance story that we've seen hundreds of times before (boy and girl grow up together as friends, girl falls in love with boy who just treats her like a sister, girl confesses love for boy, boy eventually realizes the love of his life was his friend all along, they get married and live happily ever after).
The screen play was written by Richard Curtis, which is a big red-flag given his propensity to write cheese-ball love stories. If you liked "Love Actually" (written by Curtis), you will actually love Yesterday (as did my wife who enjoyed both movies).
There are a few humorous moments ( I particularly liked that Oasis didn't exist either since there we no Beatles to copy) which help keep the movie somewhat entertaining. Kate McKinnon plays an evil music manager in an over-the-top way that channels Cruella Deville, which also detracted from the movie.
The acting and signing was generally well done, which merits a few stars. All-in-all the movie's a disappointment considering what it could have been in the hands of someone with more talent than Curtis.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Disappointing
With all the hype surrounding this movie, I was expecting something much better. In general, the movie was well made, the acting was strong and the cinematography was excellent. What ruined the movie for me were several things (spoiler alert):
There were far too many coincidences and/or unlikely (if not impossible) events. While the transmitter is an explanation (though even that's a stretch) as to how Chigurh could have found Moss at the motel, how did the Mexicans know he was there? How did Carson Wells find Moss in Mexico and how would Chigurh know both of them were there since the transmitter was gone by then? Wells finding the money was another huge stretch. I could go on with several more example but others have pointed them out. Suspending disbelief is one thing but this was just sloppy.
I have no problems with movies with endings that leave parts of the plot unresolved or don't tie things together neatly. What I didn't like about this ending was the sheriff babbling on about some dream he had. What a weak and boring way to end a film! Half way through his scene I was making a mental note to myself not to bore anyone ever again by describing my dreams to them. I had never realized before how boring it is to listen to someone go on and on about some dream, especially when its implied that the dream has some profound meaning.
There are far too many flaws in this movie - it's way overrated.
The Notebook (2004)
Predictable, unremarkable romance flick
The first half of this movie is a cliché-fest - just about every lame love story cliché is trotted out: the boy who does outrageous things to attract the girl, the poor boy who falls in love with a rich girl who has parents who are shocked because the boy is beneath her (that one's only been done thousands of times before!), first love being the only true love, etc.
It was also obvious to me from the start who the old characters were and it made it somewhat annoying to hear James Garner referring to his character in the third person as he narrated the story.
The movie improved somewhat in the second half, once the boiler-plate romance was out of the way and it started to become somewhat original and more enjoyable. The improvement wasn't enough for me to recommend this movie.
Love Actually (2003)
Trite and unrealistic
If you are sucker for far-fetched romantic comedies, by all means go out and rent this movie - I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If not, I'd advise you to stay away as this was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. The acting was decent and it was filmed well but, apart from that, it was terrible.
The film is made up of several 'story lines' that somewhat come together at the end. Most of these stories are tired, old clichés and completely unbelievable. They have about as much connection with reality as Alien vs. Predator. A couple of scenes were fairly humorous which at least made about 2 minutes of this movie somewhat entertaining (though they certainly don't make up for the remaining 133).
I've got nothing against love stories as long as they are believable and meaningful. The stories that make-up this movie are neither. They are trite, unrealistic and trivialize love instead of respecting it.
Willard (2003)
Should have been much better.
This could have been a very good, creepy movie. Instead, the director ruined it by trying to create a Tim Burton film, complete with lame Danny Elfman-like soundtrack. Instead of being a 'horror' movie it ends up as cartoonish and not really scary at all. Crispin Glover as Willard was the only good thing about this movie even though his performance was somewhat restrained for him.
I didn't see the original so I can't say how good a remake it was but if you are looking for a good, scary movie avoid this one.
David Bowie: Serious Moonlight (1984)
Too slick concert movie.
There are some great Bowie songs on this video but everything is far too slick. This was filmed at a time when Bowie was cashing in on his hit album and playing all his hits in a sanitized manner. Rent the Ziggy Stardust movie instead.
Pleasantville (1998)
Effects were neat but an over-rated movie.
I had heard what a great movie this was supposed to be but I was really disappointed. Sure, the colorizing effects were neat but that's about it. The story is a sort of moralistic tale about how everything was not as good as it seemed in the fifties,etc... As if anyone really believed that anyway. The movie is full of all kinds of preachiness that is too obvious and heavy handed. Sure, a world such as depicted in Pleasantville would have problems but I know of no-one who thinks of that world as an ideal. This movie got real old and boring real fast.
