Marvin's Room (1996)
How'd This One Sneak By?
3 August 1999
I rented this movie without knowing a thing about it. Now I'm wondering why this movie snuck by me until now. An excellent storyline, Keaton is at her best, DiCaprio was wonderful in his role as the lonely teenager, Gwen Verdon was a hoot, and Streep did a great job in a part unlike most of her others. The relationship between Keaton and DiCaprio was the best part of the movie - well-developed, and nary a false note. All families have relationships within them that have developed for various reasons but this family I ended up caring about. This was a wonderful movie - rent it, you won't be sorry.

Top Notch Entertainment
31 July 1999
I have to admit that I am not a space nut. But something told me to tape this TV-series and I am so glad I did. All 12 episodes were wonderful. I ended up caring for these pioneers, be they astronauts, wives, engineers, geologists, whatever. Humor, poignancy, gratification, jealousy - all emotions were portrayed well. The series even prompted me to check out the various books by Slayton, Lovell, and others. I wasn't so caught up in the actual facts as I was how each person was driven to succeed in their quest to get to the moon. I will buy this series when I can round up the $65. Until then, I will view my grainy tapes again and again. A great theme song - only wish it were available on a soundtrack of just the score without all the "oldies". A first-rate job of depicting the dedicated efforts by so many. A+++

Wonderful portrayal of women going West
31 July 1999
I've seen this movie several times on the late-late show and have enjoyed it each time. What a great portrayal of women and how they had the courage and fortitude to go where they perhaps had a chance for a new life. Hardships galore, inner strengths found, new love. The women (especially the older gal) were wonderful and showed us how difficult it must have been to take on such a dangerous trip across the country. Everything possible happened to them yet they still kept their determination alive to reach their destination. Proud and glorious movie.

Seeing it ONCE was enough!
19 July 1999
I didn't see this movie until way after I heard stories of people seeing it 10+ times and boy was I disappointed. Other than the half hour of the ship going down (which was impressive), the other stuff was no better than an old rerun of The Poseiden Adventure. Let's run down this hallway full of water! Jack! Rose! (If they said that once they said it a million times - even my husband noticed how often they Jacked and Rosed themselves to death). I have really enjoyed DeCaprico in the past (Gilbert Grape especially) and think he has a future as a good actor as long as someone gives him a decent script. Unfortunately, this was pretty banal. Thumbs up to the ship but thumbs down to everything else.

The Sandlot (1993)
What a fun movie...
19 July 1999
Having gone through the little league stage with my son and his friends, I thought this was really a touching and wonderful movie about what boys love to do in the summer, organized or not. We could relate to it since we have the quiet athletic one in the family and the other characters we've all known in one fashion or another. The goofy loud one, the pint-sized one with the stand-out ears, and the serious one without much of a father around. Loved it - and loved the James Earl Jones part. What a joyful laugh he has!

If you love kids, love baseball, love summer, and love a nice warm film, see it. It has ended up in our library of films we watch again and again. Makes me smile thinking of it!

Best of Steve McQueen
19 July 1999
Saw this movie again after several years and it reaffirmed why McQueen was my favorite actor when I was a teenager. I loved his ruggedness and the fact that he wasn't just a pretty boy. This is a great movie that captures the spirit of McQueen as I remember him. He had an edge to him that made him seem like a little boy with a bit of danger in him. Whether this was based on a true story or not, it was done well enough to keep my interest while waiting to see who would get out of the camp. Great acting by all (loved the Donald Pleasence part, Garner and Bronson) - beautifully photographed and great musical score. The ending was perfect - just wish McQueen could have stayed around long enough to throw the baseball to me!

Lonesome Dove (1989)
A joy to watch...again and again..
14 July 1999
Warning: Spoilers
Oh, to hear Robert Duvall say to me, just once, "Lorie Darlin'". He is absolutely superb in his portrayal of Gus and he and Tommy Lee Jones are perfect together - exactly what a lifelong friendship is all about. True to the book (which I have read several times), it is a wonderful story, beautiful scenery, fabulous score, and not a false character in the bunch. This is my idea of what movies were intended to be. Much has been said about Gus' dying scene (and rightfully so) but there are so many other gems - the scene in the bedroom with Gus and Clara, Jake's farewell to the boys, Deets' burial, and the final scene of Captain Call returning home. Perfect 10 from me.

The Natural (1984)
Not bad but a little hokey...
14 July 1999
When this movie first came out, my son was a little leaguer. Needless to say, the entire family thought this was a great movie because of the "dream come true" aspect. My son thought the home run balls hitting the light standards and the ensuing fireworks/lightening to be the greatest and I'll have to admit, on first viewing it indeed was a spine-chilling moment for anyone who plays baseball or enjoys it. However, after seeing it off and on over the years, I probably enjoy the non-baseball parts better than the hokey baseball parts which is what they seem now. Maybe we all get a little more jaded with age? Nice performances by Redford and Wilford Brimley who has the best line in the movie about how he should have stayed on the farm. I also enjoyed Bobby the batboy and his look of pure joy after the last home run. Great moment. Great musical score.
