Enjoyed this tv "chick flick" even though the story is a little "syrupy" and the ending pretty obvious even if you hadn't read the Danielle Steele novel (which I had). Well cast especially with Kathleen Quinlan and Michael Collins in the lead roles. Beatrice Straight was very good as the manipulative, scheming mother. Definitely worth seeing on a rainy night.

Started out a little slowly but gained momentum as war breaks

out. Joan Plowright is delightful as Mary with the big heart

and all the other "ladies" parts were acted beautifully; Cher

shines, Maggie Smith is wonderful as the hateful Hester. Both

Baird Wallace and Charlie Lucas who played Luca at different

ages warm your heart--Charlie Lucas is adorable! I almost missed

this in the theatres. Glad I didn't!

WARNING! do NOT watch trailers or listen to anyone about this movie! just see it, and come back and review it. I'm sorry for anyone who doesn't walk out of the theatre just blown away!

Oscar nominations at the very LEAST for Haley Joel and Bruce Willis or there IS not justice. No question that Haley Joel should win in his category. Reminiscent of Patty Duke in "The Miracle Worker" in acting ability! I want to see it again!

I can't say exactly what, but something is missing in this movie. Poor Connie. I think he gets less out of the relationships than the Guineveres. Maybe I like things "tied up" too much, but I wish we'd seen a little of Harper's work so we could judge just how well Connie taught her. A scene of her in a gallery or studio somewhere surrounded by her work as she answers a ringing telephone (presumably with Billie on the other end) would have been satisfying--no dialog necessary, just a look of sadness on her face. Whatever else, this movie sure spurred some dialog between my 25-year-old daughter and me.

Interesting that (along with another reviewer) I saw the connection between the Stephen Rea character, Connie, in this movie and Herman Wouk's Noel Airman in the 50's novel "Marjorie Morningstar" and talked about that as we walked home. And as big a bitch as Harper's mother was, she had it right as she saw through Connie. Beautifully acted by all principals!

Suspend reality and sit back and enjoy the suspense. Don't watch any trailers or ads on TV! The first movie that made me get out of my seat so I could watch it in the back of the theatre while I paced!

In spite of the terrific cast and fine musical numbers, this has to be the dumbest plots in a play/movie ever! Admittedly, musicals don't have strong story lines, but this was the worst! My advice: don't waste your time!
