Pearl Harbor (2001)
I have no one but myself to blame
24 February 2002
I was warned, I was cautioned, I was begged by friends, family, coworkers, loved ones, and even complete strangers: do NOT see this movie and any circumstance. Did I listen? No... I knew I was in big trouble right from the first scene. Generally, movies that deal with adult themes should never open with the protagonists' childhood.

The problems with this train wreck of a movie are too numerous to list (and have been more eloquently described by other contributors to this site). So let me sum it all up in a sentence: Pearl Harbor the Movie is almost as monumental a tragedy as Pearl Harbor the Historical Event.

Well, there's one piece of consolation: at least I saw it on Pay-Per-View. Financial loss: $3.95, Loss of waking hours: 3:00, Damage to my psyche: incalculable.

I had a better time recovering from my hernia operation

Just saw this, this, this...movie? tonight on Pay-Per-View. Talk about suspension of disbelief, you'll need to do some serious levitation to accept just about every premise of this, this, this...come on, someone, help me out...pathetic, lame, comic, inexcusable waste of celluloid.

And, oh wow, what a surprise, they got the antidote for the pretty, buxom babe just in time. I didn't see that one coming.

Oh well, I guess I need to look at the bright side: $3.95 is a lot less painful than $19.00 (price of two movie tickets in NYC).

New Year's resolution for 2001 --> read more books, see fewer movies.

Thank you, IMDB, for letting me vent my spleen. Now perhaps the voices in my head will go away...

Worthy of MST3K Treatment!

Bad actors, bad script, bad costumes, bad hair, bad makeup, bad plot, bad special effects. Hmm, let's see, what's the theme here? Oh yes, could it be "Bad?"

So bad it's laughable.

American Gothic (1995–1998)
Too good to survive

I first came across this series on the Sci-Fi channel last spring. I was in awe of the superb story line and excellent acting. Little did I know that this wonderful series was on network television and was canceled after one season. I thought Gary Cole's acting was incredible.

What a tragedy.

1984 (1984)
The 1984 rendition of "1984" far eclipses its predecessor.

For me, the Radford production stands as one of the most powerful films I have yet experienced. Yes, this is a film that is "experienced" rather than merely "seen." I do not adhere to the notion that films must slavishly recreate their literary inspirations. The performances of Hurt and Burton were wonderful, flawless.

I saw the film with a friend during its initial release and, 15 years later, I am still moved by its power. A true gem. I'd rate it a solid "A."
