Judaai (1997)
A middle class housewife 'sells' her husband for a life of luxury, but soon comes to regret it.
Sridevi is absolutely fantastic. This was her last Bollywood movie which she had signed before leaving. Hoever, it was by far her best performance. She was pregnant at the time with her first child, who incidentally was named after the character of Urmila Matondkar, another artiste who gave her best performance, and for once was not over the top. Anil Kapoor who always gives his best performance is also good as is Johnny Lever who is hilarious and Kader Khan. OParesh Rawal is incredibly funny and we see the debut of a new actress who can only be named 'AbbaDabbaJabba'. Dinesh Hingoo also makes an appearance in the film. Farida Jalal and Saeed Jaffery are also valued artistes in the making this film worthwhile watching. The best bit about this film is how the plot is lifted from a Hollywood movie and yet is Indian enough for Indian audience consumption.
Julie (1975)
A young teenage girl struggles with her pregnancy and longs for her mother's acceptance thereafter.
This film was possibly Sridevi's first Hindi movie, perhaps Agnipareeksha (1970) may have been dubbed in Hindi, who knows. However, her role is small but she does appear numerous times. Die hard fans should look out for the clip when Lakshmi cries in the middle of the night longing to see her baby.Julie finds herself struggling to come to terms with losing her baby even though it is born, trying to get her mother to see her point of view and also come to terms with her father's death of whom she has to miss the funeral. Lashmi also give a believable performance and is very moving in many scenes. Om Prakash acts with his usual charm and exuberance. Nadira also excels. Look out for the song 'My heart is beating'.
