George Lucas in Love (1999)
I don't know what Hans Lucas up there is talking about but. . .
Sorry, but I just have to rebut the genius that is "Hans Lucas" since I'm sure he's written and directed many short films that are this good and popular.
He wrote:
"This is the kind of referential comedy that thinks references alone make for great comedy(e.g., ha, ha! look, that guy makes a sound like Chewbacca!). References in comedy are only a starting point - it's the twist or insight you make with them that offers the opportunity for great humor. GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE is content to let its references stand on their own."
Hello! Did you even get that it's a parody of "Shakespeare in Love"? That's the "twist" you speak of. The references aren't standing on their own. . .they're using the references of one film to parody another. I don't know how you could have missed this. . .it's only in the film's title for petesake.
"And it's for this reason that it's not only boring, it's a dispassionate mess."
Dispassionate mess? Who are you. . .Pauline Kael? Give me a break. It's a light comedy/parody film. You also said it was "an enormous waste of time". An ENORMOUS waste of time?! How enormous can it be? It's less than 9 minutes long!
To me, those comments smack more of professional jealosy than they do of legitimate criticism. Bottom line, this is a VERY well done short film, especially considering the money that was spent on it. . .they managed to get a high-quality, Hollywood-looking film for a few thousand bucks. Bravo!
Foolish (1999)
"Foolish" would be the person who spends any time or money on this movie. . .
Terrible. For those who want a textbook example of everything that could possibly suck in a movie, then this is one.
I guess Master P is a hip-hop artist. I don't know why he thinks that qualifies him to write and produce movies but I think he should stick to music. Having hip-hop gangstas write fiction is about as appropriate as having John Updike or Norman Mailer cut their own rap albums. There are certain arenas that aren't meant to cross over and this is one of them. (with maybe one exception. . . "Friday" by Ice Cube was good, funny film)
Gangsta rapper/hip hop masters should do the entire film-going community a favor and stick to what they do best, i.e. ripping off/remixing old song riffs and transposing them to juvenile lyrics.
Leave the actual writing to people who know what the hell they're doing.
The Matrix (1999)
An amazing film-going experience. . .
One of the best, most invigorating film experiences I've ever had. This film hits on all cylinders: it has an inventive, ingenious plot; well-developed, sympathetic characters; and never-seen-before effects that will blow you away. I had to see it twice in two days just because I couldn't get it out of my mind.
The best thing about it is that the effects, plot and characters all work together in perfect synergy. This is not simply one of the countless big-budget FX extravaganzas that have the stock, cardboard characters and the swiss cheese plot (i.e. not only cheesy but full of holes) that exist merely so the film-makers can impress you with their effects prowess and show off their bells and whistles.
In THE MATRIX, the characters compliment the plot, which compliments the effects, which compliment the characters. There are no more effects than necessary and no less. Everything fits perfectly. This is seemless, kick-a** entertainment, populated by characters to root for and care about. Further deepening the film is its Christ-like parable about someone prophesized to save humanity, which works to great effect.
Some will say that this movie re-uses sci-fi ideas from other films, but the truth is there are no new ideas in stories anymore, only fresh ways of presenting the old ones. This movie does that in a big way. It is a serious leap of the imagination (not to mention its some of the absolute coolest stuff you'll ever see on film or anywhere else.)
