In Pot We Trust (2007)
Essential
This documentary exposes how deeply rooted uninformed mythology still is in our 'modern' societies. Watching people with the most horrible debilitating conditions improve both their physical comfort, and more importantly, their general outlook on life, just by smoking what is in fact a naturally occurring plant, is just mind-blowing.
But as pleasant as the above is, this movie will still leave you with a sense of hopelessness when confronted by the other side. Maybe the people selected to represent the opposing view, namely that there are no such thing as medical marijuana, are just complete idiots, and thus not representative of this group, but I suspect not. Rather, there just doesn't seem to be ANY worthwhile argument against allowing deeply unhappy people to strive for a better quality of life, especially when all this pursuit involves is a 'drug' as harmless as marijuana (compared to basically ALL medicine, prescription or otherwise).
War of the Worlds (2005)
Suspenseful, but seriously flawed
Had a good feeling about this movie until something like half an hour remained. The effects were nice, and the savage nature of man, when he is backed into a corner, was brilliantly portrayed through the battle-for-the-car scene. But the boy was beyond obnoxious, not to mention incredibly stupid (literally, hard to imagine anybody being this dumb). Seriously, the world is in deep pooh-pooh, and now you decide to stage a teenage rebellion?!? And what the hell did he think he would accomplish by taking on the aliens kamikaze style? And how the hell did he survive that? And why, in name of all that is logical, did the aliens who supposedly was vastly superior in intelligence not come up with some sort of vaccine to counter the bacteria on a planet they supposedly had planned to conquer for a million years? Ridiculous.
Traffic (2000)
Not the best movie of 2000...
Actually not even the best drug movie of the year 2000. The movie is decent, somewhat original, but it comes no where near Requiem for a Dream in delivering the powerful message: That drugs can indeed be bad. It is a shame that Traffic will get all the hype, while Requiem will be written off as another indie overkill (or so it has been by many critics), so I encourage everybody who liked Traffic oh so much, to give Requiem for a Dream a shot, and then reevaluate whether or not it really is the best drug movie of the year.
Another Day in Paradise (1998)
Disappointment
I was very excited when I learned that Larry Clark had made his second movie. After watching "Kids" more times that I can count, I really needed something new, but what a disappointment. "Another Day in Paradise" didn't have the same amount of energy, and surprises, as "Kids", and basically just turns into a slow moving plot, that tries to be shocking, but fails.
