Krull (1983)
Good early-80's fantasy
29 December 2003
Saw this one at the movies and really enjoyed it.For a non-CG picture,I thought the effects were quite good.Of course,I'm not a hard -to-please Gen-X whiner,so "cheesy" effects don't bother me too much. And why don't you MST3K wannabes come up with another word besides "cheesy"?Anyway,I got just as much enjoyment from "Krull" as I did "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and my butt did'nt get as tired from sitting."Krull"had a better music score, too,so there.

fun post-apocalypse moom pitcha!
15 August 2003
First saw this one when I was 12 and loved it ever since(I'm now 44-a geezer,I suppose}Probably the best low-budget sci-fi ever made,as far as I'm concerned, and one of the best endings of a movie ever(thanks to Ib Melchior and Dave Hewitt).Cast is quite good, especially Steve Franken and the always-excellent Preston Foster. And Merry Anders is,as always, a real babe.Watch it if you get the chance!!!

Lifeforce (1985)
Calm down,people!
12 March 2003
Holy mackerel! From the comments I've read so far,you would think Tobe Hooper and Cannon were trying to remake "The Magnificent Ambersons"or some other "classic of the cinema"!I personally believe they set out to provide an entertaining picture for public consumption, and as far as I'm concerned ,that's exactly what they accomplished. After wearing out my VHS copy,I had to buy the DVD,which is even better in WIDESCREEN....plus I can hit the ZOOM and see Mathilda May much better! Exciting story, great cast(Railsback always one of my faves,PLUS Firth,Stewart,Gothard,etc.).Someone commented about "cheesy effects"...are you kiddin'?The special effects in this picture are much better than the overdone computer junk you see nowadays.Of course, this is an 80's picture...no one has enough imagination to make a movie like this today!

cut this movie up for banjo picks!!!
23 May 2001
I didn't see this (ahem!) "film" for a long time because it sounded like a load of garbage. After hearing others tell how much they liked it,I got weak and watched this thing(luckily I checked it from the library and didn't pay rental). What a psychic I am!!!It WAS a load of garbage!!!I don't know why everyone seems to love this junk and think Mickey and Mallory are cool...I was ready for them to die after the first 15 minutes. The only good thing about this "Director's Cut" version I got was the unused scene where M and M get blown away by Arliss Howard's character.Should have put that in the original...right at the beginning!!

Godzilla 2000 (1999)
Godzilla vs.The Frisbee!
30 December 2000
Took the kids(9 and 13)to see 2000 and we all had a great time. This is definitely a picture you had to see in the theater, because it loses some on television.Big G takes on Orga, and the audience was the winner!Sure, there was some poor english dialogue, and the effects were a little shaky insome scenes, but who cares? We were entertained, folks, and that's more than Hollywood seems to be able to do, nowadays. Also,if I see the words "corny","cheesy",or"campy" about one more time from you MST3K-wannabes,I may lose my lunch AND dinner.

One of the best of the Vietnam movies
1 October 2000
The person who called this the worst ever obviously never saw "From Dusk Till Dawn".Although I was just a kid when the war in Vietnam was taking place, from what I've read and what older guys I know who WERE there have told me,I'd guess that "Spartans" is about as realistic,if not more so,than any of the other Nam pictures.Plus,it is an exciting,well-made movie with a good cast.Burt Lancaster at his worst?I hardly think so!

sorry,folks......I liked it!
22 September 2000
After first reading about this movie in one of the media mags, then never seeing it released, plus reading several bad reviews,I was all set to hate this movie when I finally found it on video.Well...I rather liked it ,myself. If there was anything I really didn't like,it was Cap's first loser fight against the Skull, plus it needed more 40's-Nazi-battling.Otherwise,I enjoyed it.The story wasn't as bad as everyone else says, and neither was the acting.Matt Salinger did a really nice job as Rogers/Cap,and the rest of the cast was good, also, especially Cox and Gillingham.Good to see Wade Preston again, and although Scott Paulin may have hammed it a little, since he is one of my favorite actors,I ain't gonna trash him.Pretty good movie.

Gorgo (1961)
Good British Godzilla
24 July 2000
Gee,after reading all the comments from the MST3K-wannabes,I'm not sure whether I should say that I enjoyed "Gorgo",that the special effects were quite adequate,if not outstanding, that Travers,Sylvester, and Winters do quite well in the acting department, and that it has a really nice Angelo Lavagnino musical score.Oh well,I'll say it anyway..........

Jesse Pearson Rules!!!
26 April 2000
My all-time favorite musical, even if I've never seen the Broadway version.Probably just as well, because after seeing the movie version as many times as I have, seeing the theater version would probably be a BIG disappointment. What's not to like about this movie?Only a stuffed-shirt theater snob would hate this picture.Great cast, great songs, cool choreography....and the late, great Jesse Pearson as the man himself,Conrad Birdie.Watch it WHENEVER you get the chance!!!

Hard Rain (1998)
Novel setting
28 February 2000
I would have to say that a flooded town IS about the most original setting for an action movie that I've ever seen. This was a very good movie with a good cast and great effects and action scenes. If you like caper flicks like this, pay no attention to the other pseudo-critics and get this movie!

Odd Jobs (1986)
One of my favorite comedies
27 February 2000
Hilarious movie features Reiser as a college student who decides to operate his own moving business, where he is joined by his friends, several of whom are played by well-known stand-up comics. Many quite funny scenes and characters, especially Jake Steinfeld and Rick Overton.Leo Burmester is hysterical as Wylie, the trucker.

Classic horror-comedy
9 January 2000
This is my favorite vampire movie, even moreso than the Hammer films(which I also enjoy). The atmosphere and attention to detail in this picture will bowl you over. The entire cast is wonderful, especially Polanski as Alfred, the assistant vampire destroyer. The horror scenes actually work, while the slapstick and gag scenes are quite good, too.Great Jewish vampire and buck-toothed hunchback.See this on a dark,SNOWY evening,if possible. It will make the experience even better!

Really good dino movie
26 December 1999
I first saw this movie in '69,at a summer kids' matinee, and thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.Seen it several times since, and still love it.The first eohippus scene is one of the best Harryhausen effects scenes ever, even better than the CGI stuff you see nowadays.Unlike most critics,I think the story is good and the cast does well with it,especially Laurence Naismith(Prof.Bromley) and Freda Jackson(the spooky old gypsy,Tia Zorina). And,as usual,Jerome Moross turns out a wonderful musical score.Watch it,if you get the chance!!

Good ultra-low-budget psycho movie
12 December 1999
As a fan of Ray Steckler,I suppose I am being a little biased,as so many others seem to hate this movie, but I don't care.I think it's Ray's best movie, and stands well above other indie pictures I've seen. There are many scenes in here that are quite good(just the Hollywood party scene with a sleepy-looking Arch Hall Sr. is worth the price of a rental)and Steckler handles his action scenes well, also. The scene where Steckler(as Mad Dog)slaps around Erina Enyo looked downright brutal to me.BY all means, watch this movie if you get the chance!!

Good movie-worth seeing more than once
21 November 1999
As far as I am concerned ,this was the best movie of the summer of 1998,much more enjoyable than SMARMAGEDDON and other trash released then. The story was good, the effects were excellent, and the cast did a good job I thought.Pay no attention to those reviews above(especially the foreigners whose idea of gripping entertainment is the life story of some farmer in Sussex)and rent or buy this movie if you can!

Good sci-fi/gangster film
21 November 1999
After first reading about this movie when i was a kid,I finally caught it on TNT late one night.I thought it was pretty good ,even though hampered a little by a low budget.Ron Randell was his usual reliable self, and the rest of the cast was very good, especially Debra Paget as the snaky ex-girlfriend and Elaine Stewart(wooo!)as Randell's lover.Watch it if you get the chance.

an old favorite of mine
21 November 1999
I first saw this one Saturday afternoon when I was about 14 and immediately fell in love with it.I realize it is a little corny at times, and Mickey Shaughnessy is pretty hard to take, but otherwise it is a fun movie.Good special effects, and the cast does a nice job(no matter what critics of this movie say),especially Walter Brooke ,one of my favorite unsung character actors.Watch it if you get the chance!

one of Mitchum's best
21 November 1999
After reading about this movie years before,I finally caught it on AMC one night and thoroughly enjoyed it.Mitchum is a loser gambler who gets lured South-of-the border by Burr,a deported mobster, who intends to kill off Mitchum and take his place through plastic surgery so he can reenter the U.S.But things turn out quite differently when Mitchum meets up with Russell and Price.Wonderful comedy/drama with great dialogue and performances, even down to the smaller parts(Holt as FBI agent whose luck runs out,Mylong as spooky ex-Nazi doctor). And lest I forget, the always reliable and formidable Ray Burr.Watch it if you get the chance!!!

Flame on,Bubba!
15 November 1999
This is one of my favorite quirky movies. I've seen it several times and always enjoy it. Good storyline and very good cast, especially Arliss Howard and Debra Winger. The fire effects are quite well-done (pardon the expression) also.

Boogie Nights (1997)
definitely not a classic
11 June 1999
Okay look at the porn industry in the 70's.Could have lopped out about 45 minutes anywhere and it probably wouldn't have made much difference.Alfred Molina and Don Cheadle stole the picture in their few scenes.Last scene to me was hilarious and totally unnecessary.....talk about poor make-up jobs!!

most definitely NOT the best Bond film ever
9 June 1999
Pretty disastrous "spoof" of the Bond films falls flatter than a manhole cover. Some of it is passable, but on the whole...not too goooood!!Woody Allen's scenes are the best part of the movie. As for the comment above about Roger Moore "abominations",how any sane person could find this stuff more entertaining than "Octopussy" or "For Your Eyes Only" is well beyond my comprehension.

Goulet and Williams in the same picture....who'd have thought?
15 April 1999
I saw this movie years ago, thought it was really good, but haven't seen it since. Two of the most popular singers of the 60's in one movie (plus Chevalier)....cool.If you have ever had the chance to see Andy's wonderful show at Branson,Mo.,he uses (or did use) a clip of himself and Sandra Dee(from this picture)in an absolutely hysterical bit.Put this movie out on video!!
