Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
Bad or worse. Can't pick
This game simply was the worst fantasy like movie I have seen till this date. They tried to compensate the bad acting in this Disney type movie with great special effects. I really look forward to Lord of the Rings since then I can finally forget this movie. The only reason it was a box-office hit was becuase of the extreme hype about the movie.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
The average anime is better
Well what can I say. I got exactly what I expected. The animation is pretty good but the movie itself was awful in my opinion. The plot was very straightforward and there was no second in the movie that I could really feel that I had a surprise coming. The feeling in general is that this probably huge budget movie has spent its money on the voice actors and the animation and then forgot about a good plot. The average anime doesn't have high tech computer graphics but at least has more twists and turns, surprises and "deep" characters than this movie. I gave it a 3 for the cute graphics but that is really where it ends.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
10 out of 10 on the Sleepy Meter
I literally fell asleep watching this movie. I was hoping for a good follow up to Indiana Jones type movies but no... this was not even close. It is very clear that with the budget nowadays 90% of the budget goes to either sex, babes in tight outfits or special effects. This is since either of these three can attract a huge brainless mass.
As with all the latest Hollywood movies the plot has been made in the local bar on the back of a napkin with a dirty crayon. Even glass cannot be more transparent than this. The plot was predictable and boring. The movie is a "Jolie in sexy outfit" action scenes linked together.
I did also laugh though. The only time I really laughed was when it became apparent that Lara had a 50 million dollar cardboard box to live in with 2 other goons. I refer to this as a cardbord box as it was made very clear by the invasion of the 3rd rate swat team that the protection was non-existant. Maybe also someday I might find the explanation as to why it was so impossible for 5 guys with machine guns to hit one woman on a piece of elastic. (Must be the guys that normally portray the StormTroopers in Star Wars as they also can't hit an elephant at 5")
I could rant on about the second part of the movie if only I had seen it. The sporadic pieces of it made me hurl from the overkill in spec effects. So this is what sells nowadays? Then I very much fear for the film industry...............
Tenchi Muyô! In Love (1996)
Tenchi backgrounds.......
The animation was ok if though a bit shifty at times. This time the past has to be set right to save the current. The nice thing about this feature is the fact that it deals a lot with Tenchi's father who is normally only shown as a weird pervert in the series. However the fact remains that the same girls keep fighting among one another over who gets to do what to Tenchi. Personally I wonder long they can stretch this running gag. My favorite character has to be Ryoko who due to her 700 year statis as a demon has quite straightforward conceptions of the world and the interaction with it. Overall it is more for the anime lovers who know a bit about the OVA eps since this is basically sending out a lot of background information. The new viewers will probably enjoy the animation but will be confused by lot of the personae.
Wild Wild West (1999)
I heard it was bad but of course had to it see myself.
I expected more from a science fiction movie with Will Smith in it. The effects are really pathetic and are so obvious it isn't even funny anymore. Kline adds a nice and funny note to the macho Will Smith performance and succeeds here and there while demonstrating he has more gizmos than Inspector Gadget. Base line: A weak story and what seems like low budget effects. The announcements were better.
