Cobra (1986)
It says a lot on America in the mid-80's
28 August 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Cobra is not a good action film. Neither is it a good cop drama or a good buddy cop film. Cobra is something else. It is a testimonial of what the USA were about in the late Reagan era.

The film introduces us to Marion Cobretti, a cop with an attitude who won't respect the rules since they are made to protect the bandits, the killers and the rapists. He thinks that to fight those, he has to act like them.

That is how he gets into conflict with his boss, Monte who is presented as a liberal freak who'd rather let people get killed than to use violence on the evil men. In a particular scene, Cobretti and his colleague Gonzales are talking about how they'd like to punch a hole in this Monte's chest. They are half-joking about it but you still feel that those trigger-happy cops would pretty much be able to do it anytime if they felt like it.

That same Monte is also presented as the person responsible for hiring a traitor female cop and forcing Cobretti to work with her. The result of this is that Cobretti almost gets killed because of the left-wing tolerant attitude of this liberal superior.

At the end of the movie, Cobretti saves the day by using every technique he knows to exterminate his foes(shooting them, blow them up, put them on fire, etc.) and then goes to punch his liberal boss in the face.

What really fascinates me the most in this film is how those ideas were mainstream less than 20 years ago. How crowd were supposed to react positively to this final punch in the mouth making a statement that liberals were responsible for the rise of crime in our society.

Go see it ! run !
17 December 2001
I have seen the movie last night (December 17) at the avant-premiere here in Montreal and it already figures atop my list of favorite movies of the year, the decade and maybe even the century.

The greatest strength of this marvelous piece of art is its way to make you believe in a world where orcs and trolls fight elves and dwarves and where hobbits cross the path of humans without arousing any suspicion. I mean, as I got out of the theater, I was starting to plan my next sumer vacation in Lothlorien. I just believed in the freakin' place.

Peter Jackson surpassed himself on that one. Don't you miss it in theaters while you can. I just can't wait for the next chapter in 2002.

Poor Mummy!
14 May 2001
First, let me tell you that I did not hate "The mummy". It was light, fresh funny and action packed and it never tried to take itself too seriously. I cannot say the same of the sequel.

First of all, it lost its originality. Not only is it "inspired" by the first film, it plagiarize entire parts of it (the kids who destroys all the temple's pillars as his mother did with the library in the first installment, the huge face of Imothep in the water trying to swallow our heroes hot air balloon compared to the same face in the sandstorm trying to swallow the light airplane).

Then, there are those other movie influences: A final battle between the heroes and the arch-enemies while outside, good troops are fighting with an army so much more powerful (Did I hear someone say Star Wars?). Women fighting with various bladed weapons and running on walls (Why did I think of Crouching Tiger?) A perfectly swell gentleman turning to be the leader of a cult which our heroes spy from above(Have you seen Indianna Jones and the Temple of Doom?)

Otherwise, the story have been left out and it's just action scene over action scene with a couple of in jokes to lighten up the atmosphere and remind us of how "the mummy" was so much more better than this dumb sequel.

By the way, could anyone tell me how "The Rock" got his name in top billing when he only appears on screen for a couple of minutes.

A piece of christian filth
9 March 2001
I have been hearing a lot about this movie from christian people and web sites I sometimes consult. That was the reason that brought me to watch this pile of trash of a movie.

The saddest part is, I know some people who think this is what will really happen someday. Man! Talk about blind faithfulness.

I think I'll rent Battlefield Earth next time. At least they have Travolta with those funny eyebrows.

Don't rent it! Don't go see it and please don't talk about it!

A hilarious first film from two young creators
2 December 1999
This is their first film but wait till you see more from them! The human condition is not only a great film because of its own brand of sick humor but it also proves what you can do with a great will and not much of a budget.

Cadieux and Denault are the Russ Meyers of tomorrow.
