Ghosts: A Christmas Gift (2023)
Season 5, Episode 7
4/10
A disappointing ending
29 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this show, and so was hoping they would get a good send off. This has been the best British sitcom in decades. The main premise of this episode was just fine, but the way they handled the ending just ruined it.

Ending it with the Mum reconciling that she has to let go would have been fine. Suddenly having them leave the mansion entirely because the Ghosts don't want to get in the way didn't make any sense, especially after it had been established at the end of season 5 they didn't want to leave because they loved it so much.

I suspect the cast just wanted to close the door on the show (as I'm sure is their right), and this was a way to do so without leaving it open for any future specials or seasons.

Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
2/10
Nobody asked for this
5 October 2022
Hocus Pocus 2 looks and feels like nothing more than a money grab, admittedly I understand the original cast was enthusiastic about doing a sequel but I can't think who else was. There's an aura of nostalgia for about 30 seconds when the sisters show up and that's it. Other than than, it's just 90 minutes of fan service and poorly done fan service at that. I'm sure the original three stars go their pay day, and Disney will no doubt earn revenue from people who love nostalgia.

Disney needs to stop trying to do remakes, or sequels and get back to the creative originality that made them so huge in the first place.

When Louis Met... Jimmy (2000 TV Special)

Essential viewing
7 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Watching the new Netflix documentary, which does briefly cover this one also, made me think about this. When I first watched it, it was the year 2000. I watched it with a friend and both of us were of an age were we'd grown up watching "Jim'll Fix It!" and of course we had dreamed of one day being featured on the show.

The initial excitement of watching some lucky reporter spend a few days with someone we idolized slowly gave way to first confusion, then we just got more and more disturbed as the documentary progressed. Of course, at the time we had no idea of Savile's true depravity. We both concluded he was hiding something truly awful, and I never looked at him in the same way again.

Watching it now in context, it was clearly obvious the man had some very dark secrets that were barely concealed under the surface. I would recommend watching this then the Netflix documentary.

Interesting, but flawed.
7 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The documentary was interesting, but it really only scratched the surface of what the man did whilst mostly being bogged down in his life story (particularly in the first half) and focusing too much on several episodes of his antics on camera. The actual allegations and interviews with his victims are relegated to the final act of the second episode, this should have been in the forefront of the documentary.

Sitting watching this documentary with my American wife I frequently found myself having to explain the context of what we were watching, I think it didn't really address how much of a "national treasure" he was considered during his lifetime and how much the rumors were only whispered and rarely, if ever, brought up in the UK media. I would also have liked to see them talk more about the infamous Louis Theroux documentary, this was only very briefly touched upon.

Still, it does a good job of presenting this awful episode in British history to a wider audience so I recommend it.

Took a while to find its footing but it's a good show
25 January 2022
Fans of the original UK series may initially be put off as the first few episodes follow very similar plot lines and it just doesn't work as well. As the series progresses, however and they start to use more original plots the show gets better and better. Definitely a worthy addition to the franchise.

Squid Game (2021– )

Thought provoking.

Warning: Spoilers
I have to hand it to the Koreans, the two things I've seen from there both had very similar dark themes - the other being "I Saw the Devil". Both of which are truly disturbing pieces of art, but you can't help but keep watching to see what the conclusion may be.

The show raises some interesting questions about human nature and what drives us to do the awful things we do to one another, and you can't help but wonder if such a shadowy society producing a game like this for wealthy clients really does exist somewhere. Either way, it's a very clever concept and masterfully done.

I do hear that the subtitles to English are not always accurate but I don't speak Korean so cannot comment on that. Even if they're not, I was able to follow along and I'm hoping I didn't miss too much of the plot.

Horribly disrespectful and crass comedy
2 August 2021
And so, I loved every second of it. Satire is a fine part of the British comedy tradition and they're standing on the shoulders of Spitting Image and The Windsors.

I think those who gave this bad reviews may be unfamiliar with this and are taking it much too seriously. This is quite mild compared to some of the stuff that has preceded it.

I'll give it 2/10 for the animation
14 March 2021
Seriously, the animation was well done. The rest? I think they watched a few clips of the old cartoons and thought "we can put this stuff in the background of our crappy movie!".

Tom and Jerry deserved better.

Both Steve Coogan and John C Reilly perfectly capture Oliver and Hardy. The movie is a wonderful and sympathetic portrayal of their final tour and friendship.

Cringeworthy
25 June 2020
The host has no personality, and Ryan Reynold's attempts at voiceover humour fall flat. The contestants seem to spend half the time being coaxed to sound cheerful by the producers. This was done decades ago and with far better results, go watch reruns of Double Dare if curious.

It was fun for the nostalgia, but not much else
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm originally from Boston, England. It was an nice nostalgia trip seeing all the filming locations in and around Boston - there's a brief clip of my old street which made me smile. They did a good job of showcasing the pretty Lincolnshire countryside and at least made an effort at showing some of the grimmer parts of Boston, a town that's been in a sad decline the last few decades.

Anyway, to the show. It's a typical procedural drama but with a "fish out of water twist and they tried to make it a comedy drama. It could have worked quite well... anyone remember Heartbeat? That show was amazing. Instead they went with silly stereotypes and overused cliches about ignorant Americans. Never mind. The plots themselves are predictable and boring, and there's little in the way of character development.

One other complaint I must address. All of the so called "locals" speak with Yorkshire accents. The Lincolnshire accent is quite distinct and it just shows the producers didn't care to do their research.

An attempt to modernise the franchise falls flat
19 March 2020
I see what they were trying to do, but it just didn't work. The whole thing felt forced and ridiculous. Would have been better to do an animated version of one of the original plot-lines rather than try to shoehorn them into the modern era.

It wasn't terrible
7 March 2020
With all the backlash that happened over the original Sonic design (he really did look creepy) the movie was already considered to be a flop before it was even released. I must admit, I went in with pretty low expectations.

As it turned out, it wasn't bad at all. I grew up playing the original Sonic series and they had enough references to and in jokes to keep me amused. Jim Carrey is suitably evil as Dr Robotnik and well, James Marsden always seem to be at his best with a cute furry sidekick.

Looks like there'll be a sequel with Tails, who happens to be my favourite character. Looking forward to seeing what adventures they go on next time.

Just more of the same
17 February 2020
The first Jumanji reboot was hilarious, and a nice addition to the series. This one felt like a rehash of that same sequel with a few slight plot changes. Sure, Glover and DeVito are funny and charming but it can't save the rest of the movie.

Hopefully not a shark jumping moment
10 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode suddenly takes us out of the mediaeval fantasy world of the rest of the show and places us squarely in some kind of strange Steampunk other dimension world. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the series at all and seems weird and out of place. Yes, the Futurama references were fun to spot, but it seems so gratuitous. Then, we're slung back into regular Dreamland world and left wondering what the point was.

I truly hope this is just a one off, it will ruin the rest of the show otherwise.

Not great, but watchable
5 July 2019
I think this move turned into one of those "I hate it because everyone else does" type of memes, same with Freddy Got Fingered. It's not THAT bad. It's no Oscar winner either. What it is, is 90 minutes of the type of childish silliness you always expect from Will Ferrell and John C Reilly. If you're a fan of old slapstick movies, you're probably going to like this too. If you're looking for a clever parody of Sherlock Holmes... well, you're not going to be impressed.

Almost perfect
26 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The filmmakers did an amazing job of restoring all the old footage and audio, and I liked the simple animations to explain some of the technical concepts to an audience that may not be 100% familiar with exactly what's going on. Some of the footage were things I've never seen before, and this is coming from a huge spaceflight nerd. This should be required viewing for any history class on the Apollo era.

I've only got one complaint. The music. Don't get me wrong, I loved the music, it was well made and sounded great. The only problem was it was played over the top of all the major sequences and was so loud it overwhelmed the sounds behind it. I wanted to hear the sounds of the Saturn V launch, I wanted to hear the radio chatter. Instead I had loud music ruining the experience.

Horribly offensive, I loved every minute
18 May 2018
Not since Spitting Image have we had a show the pokes fun at the Royal Family and British Government with such sharp wit and excellent satire. It's about time. Yes, it's incredibly offensive and disrespectful, but that's the whole point. I'm a proud monarchist myself, but the whole thing is so completely ludicrous and over the top it's impossible to not laugh out loud.

So nice to see Harry Enfield back at the top of his game, he's been sadly missed in comedic roles over the last couple of decades it seems (anyone remember Harry Enfield and Chums?). His larger than life portrayal of Prince Charles is nothing short of genius.Vicki Pepperdine as Princess Anne is another highlight, as is Kathryn Drysdale's re-imagining of Meghan Markle.

What was the point?
25 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
So, visually this movie was gorgeous. It was well acted (Morgan Freeman!) and the score was wonderful. The plot, in summary:

Bad guy is corrupt. Morgan Freeman tries to kill him for being corrupt. He fails. Morgan Freeman sacrifices himself for honour. Bad guy gets more corrupt and goes crazy thinking Morgan Freeman's followers are going to kill him so builds a big palace financed by bribes. All of Morgan Freeman's followers plot in silence. Emperor says "Hey bad guy, you get a promotion and I'm outlawing bribes so you can't be corrupt any more". Bad guy gets killed, so do half of Freeman's followers in the ensuing chaos. That's it. Things go back to normal, more or less. Movie ends. Commander of bad guys meets fate in a Soprano's-esque ending leaving you go "Well what happened?"

So, yeah, if you like ambiguous allegories about honour and high fantasy you might enjoy this. If you like plots that make sense please look elsewhere as you're going to leave frustrated.

Nine Lives (I) (2016)

It's not terrible
27 October 2016
Putting Kevin Spacey and Christopher Walken into a family comedy and making it work shouldn't be too hard. Both are known for taking on unusual roles and a man trapped in a cats body by a mysterious "cat whisperer" is pretty unusual.

What we end up with is a fairly run of the mill take on "absentee workaholic Father" trope but with the added twist of a cute furry cat in the mix. It's not very original, nor are any of the jokes but I didn't hate it nearly as much as the reviewers said I would.

Certainly not a movie for someone who wants an in depth plot and heavy hitting emotion. If, however, you have kids who like cats (and what kids do not?) and want a nice easy family movie you can all relax to you're not going to be disappointed.

Surprisingly not bad
14 April 2016
I had low expectations going in, there was a time when a movie with a Wayan family name attached to it was guaranteed to be funny (Major Payne and Scary Movie come to mind) but in recent years their quality has dropped to an all time low.

If any movie deserves a parody, however, it is Fifty Shades of Grey. Although to be fair the movie was hilariously awful enough on its own. What you get is a typically low brow movie which basically rehashes the original but exaggerates it even more.

It's not going to win any Oscars, and not all of the jokes hit. If you've suffered through Fifty Shades of Grey (and I'm sorry if you have) you'll appreciate the ones that do. They skewer the original very well.

A good movie to watch if you're bored and want something totally mindless, just keep your expectations low.

Nautical nonsense is something we miss
8 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The first Spongebob movie left me cheering for more, and a rare 10/10 vote on IMDb I might add. The series, particularly the first few seasons, is some of the best animated comedy of its generation.

So, we go onto the sequel and the plot is similar to the first and sticks to the tried and tested formula - Plankton is trying to steal the Krabby Patty formula again. Only this time, forces unknown steal it just before he gets the chance so he must te-am, or is it team? up with Spongebob to find out who.

This outgoing has funny parts and the animation is definitely more polished, but somehow the jokes just don't quite flow as well and the plot seems like it's taking a back burner to set pieces. I felt many of the scenes just tailed off as the writers ran out of ideas and moved onto the next set piece. There were some funny parts, don't get me wrong it just didn't seem to work all of the time.

In all, it was an entertaining movie and I enjoyed it but somehow it's not the same. Very similar to the newer Spongebob seasons it just seems like the magic is fading. Hopefully this isn't the end yet, I for one will be sad when Spongebob finally hangs up his spatula.

Vampires Suck (2010)
8/10
It didn't suck
31 December 2010
Let me first say, I'm not a Twilight fan. But, since most of the women in my family are obsessed with it I've been forced to watch all of the Movies several times. They do suck!

Vampires Suck seemed like it would be a fun movie, parodies are a favourite of mine. It did not disappoint. Although it was supposed to be a parody the acting was actually BETTER than the acting in Twilight (not a big stretch, I know). Jenn Proske absolutely nailed the "Bella" character, right down to the silly mannerisms - I was in tears of laughter during every scene. Maybe the produces of the Twilight saga should do some recruiting?

If I had one complaint, the movie was basically a run through of the Twilight saga. I was hoping to see parodies of more Vampire movies and some other pop culture references.

Three Wise Women (2010 TV Movie)
1/10
Utter tripe
15 December 2010
I know that Hallmark have a very specific audience they are trying to reach, so please forgive me if I am biased by not being in their target demographic.

Basically, the movie is a retelling of A Christmas Carol (you know, Scrooge visited by 3 ghosts to help change his ways - Charles Dickens), only it's three Irish women (supposedly) and it's a Guardian Angel instead of a Ghost. I'm not really sure, but anyway.

Did it work? No it did not. The script was laughable, and aside from Fionnula Flanagan (this movie was far beneath her) the acting was awful. It was a good plot idea, but it fell flat. Dickens must be turning in his grave. We switched over to "Scrooged" half way, a much better reworking of Dicken's classic novel.

Hallmark have made it their business to do heartfelt uplifting movies every Christmas, what they lack is the ability. I think reruns of other classic movies in this genre would make much more sense at this time of year. There's many, many to choose from.
