Ratatouille (2007)
Excellent Bravop Magnifique
I just came out of a preview screening of Ratatouille with my 2 kids, a 3 year old boy and an almost 7 year girl and all three of us adored the movie.
Of all the summer movies I have seen so far, including Spider-man 3, Fantastic 4 #2, Ocean's 13 and Knocked Up, this is by far the best one.
The first 20 minutes is a little slow, but then it picks up and it's simply excellent.
Funny, touching, deep, it's all there. It's for the whole family, there's nothing scary at all.
I am not a good critic, so I won't bore you anymore, but do yourself a favor and go see this excellent film when it comes out.
Rumeurs (2002)
Great sitcom...
Rumeurs is a great sitcom shown here in Quebec on French CBC.
Benoit is a sportswriter who finds himself out of a job and becomes co-editor of the magazine "Rumeurs" with Esther, a writer who lies her way through her interview to land the job as co-editor as well. They meet during the first episode and hate each other right off the bat. This show sometimes reminds me of Seinfeld, sometimes of Moonlighting and sometimes its so original that I can't even describe it.
The only downside I can see is that for most people reading this, it would be unavailable unless you get the dvds, which are only in French, by the way.
Young Guns (1988)
Where have you gone Emilio Estevez ?
So it's not a great movie... and the acting is not the best from most of the main players, except for Kiefer Sutherland who truly is great no matter the script he gets. Heck, even his MCI commercials are well acted. I did however enjoy it... and would recommend it for a few laughs...
Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003)
Charlie's Angels: Full Money Back Guarantee Please
The only good thing about this movie is Bernie Mac.
The rest is just plain awful...
Demi Moore looks like she's at least 50% silicone now... Kelso, you could do so much better.
Die Another Day (2002)
Pretty damn good....
I absolutely hated the last James Bond The World Is Not Enough Now Die Another Day is a completely different thing.
Halle Berry is great, Pierce Brosnan is as good as ever and the vilains are good. Oh yes, and now stupid Denise Richard, the worst Bond Girl ever.
It is great fun and while some part of the storyline might be a bit unbelievable, it was a fun 2 hours. Highly recommended
Stuart Little 2 (2002)
The law of diminishing returns
I always thought Stuart Little #1 was a cute children movie. Recent critics I had read lead me to believe that the second installment would be better. After seeing it last night with my wife and 2 year old daughter (who adores the first one), I can say that it doesn't live up to the first one.
Sure, the special effects are nice and the cat is funny. But the movie is really really short, the storyline dumber than a Carrot Top Commercial, and Genna Davis very annoying.
(WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD) In the movie, she plays a mother who is over-protective of Stuart and wants to protect him at all costs, which leaves Stuart somewhat frustrated. Whenever Stuart gets into some kind of danger, she blatantly disregards the safety of her 2 year old baby girl to rush to the rescue of Stuart. I am ready to buy the premise of a talking mouse as a member of the family, but I don't think it excuses the things Genna Davis character exposes her newborn to. For example, when Stuart crashes George toy plane in Central Park, the whole family runs out of the house seeking for him. Where is the baby? We don't know... But the front door is left open and there is no nanny in the house.
And at the end, when they are all in the back of a taxi cab rushing through traffic going backwards no less to find Stuart, the baby is in an unattached portable child seat held by Genna Davis. Great parenting, risk killing one kid to find another.
Look I know this is just a movie and I might be overreacting a bit, but what the hell...
(END OF SPOILERS)
Wait for it to come out of DVD or something, it isn't worth the price of admission
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Russell Crowe is simply awesome
I just saw A Beautiful Mind and I must say that Russell Crowe has delivered the finest acting performance that I have seen in a long long time. How can this be the same man who was the strong leader of Oscar winner Gladiator.
Watching him disappear in his characters is simply magic.
Undoubtedly the finest actor of our generation.
Ice Age (2002)
Bye Bye Baby!
I saw this movie with my 20-month old daughter Victoria and I have to say that I recommend to all parents out there to take their young children to see this movie.
Now, I don't know if all 20 month old will sit through it, but mine did and she was fascinated by the whole experience (it was her first movie in a theater, but she's already a veteran of computer animation movies having watched Shrek and both Toy Stories many many many times.
The movie is not scary and very cute. There are no violent scenes that might frightened the young ones.
I can't wait for it to come out on dvd so I can watch again and again with Victoria.
Enjoy...
Glitter (2001)
Ouch....
It's hard to find one redeeming quality for this movie, but I'll say this, if you wear earplugs and close your eyes, its almost bearable.
Seriously, dont waste your money, Mariah Carey's acting makes Whitney Houston performance in the Bodyguard Oscar worthy by comparison.
Whipped (2000)
Don't let the 4.5 average fool you....
Sure it's not Shakespeare, but it's definitely better than a 4.5 out of 10. It's a little bit like Swingers with a twist. I thought it was quite entertaining and my wife liked it too. Most actors (except Amanda Peet) were unknown to us but were pretty good. It's not too long, has some good laughs and a curveball ending.
8 out of 10
Omertà, la loi du silence (1996)
If you liked the Sopranos
Omerta is a 13 part mini-series that was a huge hit in Quebec. Shot in French and available in English dubbed, this is a very entertaining, full of suspense and well acted series about the mob and the people who try to stop it.
Any Given Sunday (1999)
if 4 seconds can be an eternity, Imagine what we felt like
There's a line in the new Oliver Stone movie that sums it pretty well: "Sometimes 4 seconds is an eternity". After sitting through this overlong, loud, long on style and short on substance football movie, I know about eternities.
Oliver Stone's intentions may have been honorable, but he dropped the ball on that one.
Stone throws everything at you, hoping some of it will stick... Full of clichés, this movies taught me nothing about football that I didn't already know....
