Antarctica (2008)

Needs ruthless editing
1 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
(minor spoilers) The director needs to work out what story he wants to tell and concentrate on that, neither hammering too hard on that story nor rushing off into side-stories all the time.

Some of the relationships (the journalist and the clothing-shop boy) were just unbelievable, and actions by certain characters were rather random in the story (such as when the young dancer attempts to visit his old boyfriend the choreographer with flowers).

A number of sequences just went on far too long (the opening, the café singers, and the alien-abduction conversations). I just got bored and I could feel the same restlessness across the audience at the screening I attended.

The acting was fine, but the film was let down by the unfocused direction and slack editing.

Now out on DVD!
16 August 2005
I too have been waiting 25 yrs for this to be repeated or appear on VHS or DVD, but now it is available as a complete 3 DVD set: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0009UCET6

Very good review here: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=58025 which notes:

"When Mrs Whitehouse called the show "thoroughly evil", executives giggled behind their hands, but they also conceded that guidelines had been breached, mistakes had been made, and so forth. They would "forcibly" remind producers about their responsibilities. So they solemnly promised. And while they patronised her - no such reminder was made - they also gave in to her, because when it came to deciding which shows to renew, this one disappeared in the night. I doubt if there was any explicit prohibition, but it was never repeated, never shown on UK Gold, never syndicated abroad, never released on video tape. In the quarter-century since broadcast, these ten 50-minute episodes acquired considerable mystique. Every now and again I would hear about somebody who had a friend who had a copy."

Life with Bonnie (2002–2004)
Impressed
16 October 2002
I caught an episode while channel surfing away from Frasier...and was impressed and intrigued that I forgot to change back!

There was a long interchange between Bonnie and costar Mark Derwin that I am sure was semi-improvised. If it wasn't then kudos to all for such wonderful performances.

I was just as impressed with the subsequent episode. Looks like I'll be running a tape on Tuesday nights.

Second Skin (1999)
Overwrought
21 October 2001
I saw this film a few hours ago. It's beautifully shot and there are some nice performances but it just doesn't mount up to much. It's all rather soap-operatic, with a swelling soundtrack and nowhere to go. I thought it was going to go somewhere (belatedly) in the last 20 minutes but it just got wrapped up very suddenly.

I felt I was watching a remake of "Making Love". If you really want to see some emotional truth in a situation like this, see "Hollow Reed".
