Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
Undoubtedly one of the worst films I had to sit through
When this movie first came out, my mother and I were really excited to see it, but things just got busy and the opportunity never arose. But when the movie first came out on PaperView, we purchased it. Big Mistake! This movie was absolutely, forgive my Dutch, f&%$%$$ bad. First, the acting was horrible, especially the queen who made me want to puke. Her supposedly riveting speech about dying for her country was, shudder, quite distasteful. Then, Ridley and the girl, what a terrible ensemble and Wayans, although funny in other shows, was just a pain in the neck in this one. Even the usually superb Jeremy Irons couldn't pull this movie together, and even his acting was a bit over-the-board. Ugh, I just can't get over the acting. The cast was AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL! I can't believe I wasted two hours of my night, but at least I only wasted $3.95, which is cheaper then a rental and a lot cheaper then a movie ticket. One word of advice, don't waste your breath on this one.
Cabeza de Vaca (1991)
Powerful film
I was still up at 12 in the morning, and just happened to come across this movie in the storage room. I was expecting this film to make me fall asleep, but the exact opposite occurred! This film reminds me of Tolstoy's Resurrection. It's about a man who finally realizes that the Indians were not savages and did not need to be Christianized. It's about a man, who finally sees the light.Although there is nudity in the film, it makes the picture more realistic, as back then, the idea of clothes for the Indians were different than those of the Spanish. The image that affected me the most was the huge, gleaming silver cross, carried by hundreds of spanish soldados across Old World land. There are many interpretations of what this may mean, but for sure, it definitely represents the loss of innocence for the Indians and the final victory for the Spanish. Go and see this film! It is absolutely fantastic!
Gettysburg (1993)
WOW!
I was just lucky enough to flip through the History Channel, which was broadcasting Gettysburg. What can I say, except the film was astounding! Sure, I studied the Civil War, and I knew who the North and South was as a whole. But this movie had the audience see the individual characters that were crucial in planning out the strategies. Of course, all this would not have been made possible without the fabulous actors. Tom Berenger as James Longstreet, Martin Sheen as General Robert E. Lee and my favorite, Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain, were all fantastic.
I know so much more about the war that went on between the Confederates and the Yankees, all thanks to this wonderful epic. I would see it again and again. For me, this is one of the best Civil War movies ever made and plan to get the tape. ( I haven't seen Glory yet, so I will have to do that.) The four hour long time, does not bother me one bit, considering how much I enjoyed.
All in all, I recommend it to everyone who has not seen it!
The Patriot (2000)
Disappointed!
I have to say that this movie wasn't up to my expectations. If your not going to make a historical movie historically accurate, than what is the point? I'm a history buff, which may explain the reason for my resentment, but still there were an awful lot of scenarios that were falsely portrayed ( not giving anything away here.) One scene when Lisa Brenner stood up and gave her patriot speech just made me cringe. That scene should have been cut out altogether! The only thing that made this film good was good 'ol Mel.
Most people would have compared this film to Gibson's Braveheart, but I am more likely to compare this film to The Gladiator. Both films deal with a man who face similar situations. I have to say that I enjoyed Gladiator much more than The Patriot.
The Patriot was predictable and too melodramatic. I think I got sucked in by watching the trailer. I mean I was so thrilled when I first saw the trailer for this movie, but that excitement died when I saw this film.
Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)
Just a little message about the movie
This movie was absolutely unbelievable... I mean if a group of people could steal cars that have top security in an impossibly short time, just like that as seen in the movie, then no one in the world is safe. I mean with the flick of the hand, the security of the car is disarmed and voila, one more car is stolen. Please!
